This book was released on 2014 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the current study was to further the literature on attributional style and depression by considering the role of two positive elements as protective factors (i.e., self-esteem and enhancing attributional style for positive events) in a model of depression focused on early adolescence with a consideration for gender differences. The two theories guiding this investigation are the integrated hopelessness self-esteem theory of depression (Metalsky, Joiner, Hardin, & Abramson, 1993) and the recovery model (Needles & Abramson, 1990). Attributional style for positive events, depression, and self-esteem were assessed in a sample of 477 7th and 8th graders twice over a 4-month period. Results indicate significant correlations between attributional style and self- esteem, as well as significant correlations between atttributional style and depression for both boys and girls, although the correlation was stronger for girls. The results also indicate a significant correlation between self-esteem and depression for both boys and girls. In the test of separate models, moderation was not supported. Results of the mediation analysis indicate mediation of self-esteem in the relationship between attributional style for positive events and depression for girls, boys, and the full sample. Keywords: attributional style, depression, self-esteem, integrated theory, recovery model.

With Positivity people can learn optimism which can lead to more productive and happier lives. With the aim of living good life one needs to be physically and psychologically healthy. It may help understanding emotions like excitement, satisfaction, pride and awe which are connected with positive outcomes in life. A shift in psychological research is recent, instead of focusing on pathology, the examination of the positive aspects has been more important. Many things could be studied about adolescents like how their bodies work, how they behave in various contexts, how they solve problems and make decisions, how they relate to each other, how they learn new skills and ideas, what attitudes they have about various issues, what factors affect their attitudes and abilities, and so forth. Investigation reveals that adolescents are an extraordinarily diverse group of people. Optimism and well-being, which are main emphasis of the current study, are two important components of positive psychology. The aim of this book endeavor is to glimpse the relationship between self-efficacy and self-esteem on the general well-being of the adolescents. The topic was selected by keeping in mind the current mind set of adolescents. Adolescence is a time when young people want to take new responsibilities and experiment with independence. They look for identity, learn to apply values acquired in early childhood and develop skills which will help them become caring and responsible adults. World Health Organization defines adolescence "as the period in human growth and development that occurs after childhood and before adulthood, from ages 10 to19". It represents one of the critical transitions in the life span and is characterized by a tremendous pace in growth and change that is second only to that of infancy (WHO, 2015). Adolescence period of life bridges childhood and adulthood. This changing period is characterized by significant biological, cognitive, and psychosocial changes. Adolescence marks a period of rapid change in an individual as he moves from childhood to adulthood. These changes are biological, psychological, emotional and social. Adolescence word came from the Latin word - adolescere' which means 'to grow'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Adolescence breaks new ground as an important central resource for the study of adolescence. Comprehensive in breath and textbook in depth, the Encyclopedia of Adolescence – with entries presented in easy-to-access A to Z format – serves as a reference repository of knowledge in the field as well as a frequently updated conduit of new knowledge long before such information trickles down from research to standard textbooks. By making full use of Springer’s print and online flexibility, the Encyclopedia is at the forefront of efforts to advance the field by pushing and creating new boundaries and areas of study that further our understanding of adolescents and their place in society. Substantively, the Encyclopedia draws from four major areas of research relating to adolescence. The first broad area includes research relating to "Self, Identity and Development in Adolescence". This area covers research relating to identity, from early adolescence through emerging adulthood; basic aspects of development (e.g., biological, cognitive, social); and foundational developmental theories. In addition, this area focuses on various types of identity: gender, sexual, civic, moral, political, racial, spiritual, religious, and so forth. The second broad area centers on "Adolescents’ Social and Personal Relationships". This area of research examines the nature and influence of a variety of important relationships, including family, peer, friends, sexual and romantic as well as significant nonparental adults. The third area examines "Adolescents in Social Institutions". This area of research centers on the influence and nature of important institutions that serve as the socializing contexts for adolescents. These major institutions include schools, religious groups, justice systems, medical fields, cultural contexts, media, legal systems, economic structures, and youth organizations. "Adolescent Mental Health" constitutes the last major area of research. This broad area of research focuses on the wide variety of human thoughts, actions, and behaviors relating to mental health, from psychopathology to thriving. Major topic examples include deviance, violence, crime, pathology (DSM), normalcy, risk, victimization, disabilities, flow, and positive youth development.

Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, there has been a major increase in research into the effects of the arts on health and well-being, alongside developments in practice and policy activities in different countries across the WHO European Region and further afield. This report synthesizes the global evidence on the role of the arts in improving health and well-being, with a specific focus on the WHO European Region. Results from over 3000 studies identified a major role for the arts in the prevention of ill health, promotion of health, and management and treatment of illness across the lifespan. The reviewed evidence included study designs such as uncontrolled pilot studies, case studies, small-scale cross-sectional surveys, nationally representative longitudinal cohort studies, community-wide ethnographies and randomized controlled trials from diverse disciplines. The beneficial impact of the arts could be furthered through acknowledging and acting on the growing evidence base; promoting arts engagement at the individual, local and national levels; and supporting cross-sectoral collaboration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of the psychological construct of self-efficacy is widely acknowledged as one of the most important developments in the history of psychology. Today, it is simply not possible to explain phenomena such as human motivation, learning, self-regulation, and accomplishment without discussing the role played by self-efficacy beliefs. In this, the fifth volume of our series on adolescence and education, we focus on the self-efficacy beliefs of adolescents. We are proud and fortunate to be able to bring together the most prominent voices in the study of self-efficacy, including that of the Father of Social Cognitive Theory and of self-efficacy, Professor Albert Bandura. It is our hope, and our expectation, that this volume will become required reading for all students and scholars in the areas of adolescence and of motivation and, of course, for all who play a pivotal role in the education and care of youth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides multifaceted and multidisciplinary insights into the growing field of health studies. Providing inputs from the behavioural sciences as well as social sciences, it discusses the issues of recovery from illness, and growth and wellbeing, as situated in social and eco-cultural contexts, and addresses the modalities of health-related interventions in diverse contexts. The specific themes taken up by the contributors are post-trauma growth, resilience, gender and health, distress and wellness, indigenous healing, counselling and psychotherapy, disability-related interventions, self-healing, as well as health issues of special groups like adolescents and the elderly, cancer patients and those suffering from other chronic illnesses. Till recently, the medical model has prevailed as the chief form of understanding health and illness. This has led to marginalization of the context, localization of all health and wellness components within the individual, and to biological reductionism. The contributions to this volume propose corrective measures and provide diverse approaches in a balanced manner. This volume is useful for researchers and practitioners interested in health studies, including the behavioural sciences, social work, medical anthropology, and public health.
