Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detached breakwaters can be a viable method of shoreline stabilization and protection in the United States. Breakwaters can be designed to retard erosion of an existing beach, promote natural sedimentation to form a new beach, increase the longevity of a beach fill, and maintain a wide beach for storm damage reduction and recreation. The combination of low-crested breakwaters and planted marsh grasses is increasingly being used to establish wetlands and control erosion along estuarine shorelines. This report summarizes and presents the most recent functional and structural design guidance available for detached breakwaters and provides examples of both prototype projects and the use of available tools to assist in breakwater design. Functional design guidance presented includes a review of existing analytical techniques and design procedures, functional design considerations, and data requirements. The chapter on structural design guidance includes static and dynamic breakwater stability and methods to determine performance characteristics such as transmission, reflection, and energy dissipation. Also included is a discussion of numerical and physical modeling as tools for prediction of morphological response to detached breakwaters, and a case example of a breakwater project designed and constructed at Bay Ridge, Maryland. Beach stabilization, Salient, Breakwaters, Tombolo.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technical Engineering and Design Guides, as adapted from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers No. 6. This book provides guidance for the design and placement of beach stabilization structures, specifically groins, nearshore breakwaters, and submerged sills. Groin dimensions--such as height, length, spacing, and permeability--and their effects on a groin's functional performance are examined, along with the use of physical and mathematical models to evaluate designs. Topics include: various design factors; the effect of breakwaters on nearshore circulation; wave conditions in the breakwater's lee; longshore transport; onshore-offshore transport; and construction and post-construction activities. Because the design of beach stabilization structures requires analysis of the wave, current, and longshore transport environments as well as the coastal processes at a project site, this manual can only provide general guidance and design concepts in the area of beach stabilization. The manual also includes a compilation of the advantages and disadvantages of the various types of beach stabilization systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global warming, melting polar caps, rising sea levels and intensifying wave-current action, factors responsible for the alarming phenomena of coastal erosion on the one hand and adverse environmental impacts and the high cost of 'hard' protection schemes, on the other, have created interest in the detailed examination of the potential and range of applicability of the emerging and promising category of 'soft' shore protection methods. 'Soft' methods such as beach nourishment, submerged breakwaters, artificial reefs, gravity drain systems, floating breakwaters, plantations of hydrophylous shrubs or even dry branches, applied mostly during the past 20 years, are recognised as possessing technical, environmental and financial advantageous properties deserving more attention and further developmental experimentation than has occured hitherto. On the other hand, 'hard' shore protection methods such as seawalls, groins and detached breakwaters, artefacts borrowed from port design and construction technology, no matter how well designed and well implemented they may be, can hardly avoid intensification of the consequential erosive, often devastating, effects on the down-drift shores. Moreover, they often do not constitute environmentally and financially attractive solutions for long stretches of eroding shoreline. Engineers and scientists practising design and implementation of shore defence schemes have been aware for many years of the public demand for improved shore protection technologies. They are encouraging efforts that promise enrichment of those environmentally sound and financially attractive methods that can be safely applied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anglès: This study consists on the analysis of detached breakwaters and their influence on the shoreline response. Their importance to protect coastal strips against erosion and the difficulty to determine their complete behaviour and their relevant parameters, are the main aspects treated along the whole paper. First of all, a general overview of coastal dynamics is depicted. Second, a description of the actual coastal protection state is made, highlighting the reasons why coastal engineers have been focused on the problems and solutions related to coastline response for the last years. A comparison between the different measures that can be applied is realised in order to define their strong and weak points and to introduce offshore breakwaters as a valid and broadly applied option. The third item deals with detached breakwaters characteristics and influence on morphodynamic processes, and is the previous step to the exposure of the main topic of the thesis: the design guidelines. A subdivision between submerged and emerged breakwaters is made in order to achieve a better understanding of the process behind and around the structures, and highlight the relative difference of behaviour. General design guidelines, basically in form of geometric indicators, are defined and classified depending on their shoreline response description, for instance discerning between salient, tombolo and limited response. In order to determine the current validity of these indicators, and other parameters that seem to be relevant and were not taken into consideration, an overview of real reported cases is exposed. Comparisons between the results observed in the real cases with the guidelines and the numerical calculations realized on a first stage are described, stressing the complexity of the design of detached breakwaters.
