Book Synopsis Energy and Agriculture by : G. Stanhill
Download or read book Energy and Agriculture written by G. Stanhill and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy and agriculture are both extremely broad subjects and their interactions - the subject of this book - cover almost the full spectrum of the agricultural sciences. Yet the subject is a relatively new one whose importance first received widespread recognition barely a decade ago, following the dramatic increase in oil prices during 1973. The impact of this increase was such as to promote a world-wide debate on the future direction that agriculture should take. This debate was, and is, of particular concern in countries where agriculture plays a leading role in economic and social development. During the last half century many national agricultural systems have been transformed from almost closed, self-sufficient systems with few locally produced inputs geared to satisfy local requirements, to intensive, open systems, utilizing large quantities of energy-rich inputs such as fossil fuel for manufactured agro-chemicals, water distribution and imported animal feedstuffs to produce a range of sophisticated products, often for export, which in tum require many energy-rich inputs for their marketing. This industrialization of agriculture has proved to be very successful in many respects and indeed was accepted as a general model for agricultural development allowing increased productivity and efficiency per unit land, labor and water, even in areas with limited natural resources.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Energy for World Agriculture by : B.A. Stout
Download or read book Handbook of Energy for World Agriculture written by B.A. Stout and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adequate food supplies and a reasonable quality of life require energy - both in commercial and non-commercial forms. This handbook is intended as a reference for individuals who want a comprehensive overview of energy for agriculture, many of whom are located in remote areas with limited library resources. The purpose is to put energy for agriculture in perspective by presenting numerous national and regional examples of energy usage.Since the early 1970s, world petroleum prices have fluctuated from US$3/barrel to more than US$40/barrel in 1981, and then back to one-third of the peak price today. Consequently, the rural sector depends heavily on non-commercial energy sources. Availability of such energy is highly site-specific. This handbook deals extensively with non-commercial energy - its sources, the technologies for converting energy to more useful gaseous and liquid forms, and its ultimate end-uses.Photographs, tables, line drawings and graphs are used extensively. Over 600 references are listed along with agency names and addresses for obtaining further information.

Book Synopsis Constructing Reform by : Vaughan Higgins
Download or read book Constructing Reform written by Vaughan Higgins and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The productivity and efficiency of farmers in both Australia and other Western nations has assumed increasing significance on the formal political agenda since the 1960s. Economic changes at both the international and national level have raised questions among economists, farm organisations and state agencies concerning the capacity of some farmers to be able to earn an adequate income, and thereby contribute to national agricultural output and efficiency. While these concerns have contributed to policies of farm subsidisation in Europe, Britain and the United States, Australia has taken a somewhat different path. Farm reconstruction and adjustment programs were created from the early-1970s that sought to 'restructure' the farm sector by encouraging so-called 'unviable' farmers to exit the industry while providing incentives for remaining producers to improve their productivity. Economists in both the public service and academic institutions have welcomed such policies arguing that intervention in assisting processes of 'adjustment' makes agricultural resources available for those farmers who will use them in the most efficient manner, while ensuring also that the welfare needs of unviable farmers are met. The aim of this book is to explore the events, techniques and forms of calculation through which economic expertise in Australia has come to assume increased authority on matters of agricultural change, and the consequences of this for how strategies of 'restructuring' are assembled as objects of knowledge.
