Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is not always a bowl of cherries. As the world we live in becomes more complex, we face new challenges, unforeseen and almost unimaginable only a generation ago. Yet for those living in oppression, little changes with time. Jacob Barak was born and raised in Burundi where Evildoers treated members of his tribe as immoral beings. Yet as a young boy, he was full of joy and optimism. As he grew and his horizons widened, he saw the injustice his people were subjected to. He witnessed firsthand soldiers and civilians pounding their country fellows with sledgehammers and rocks or stabbing them with butcher knives and bayonets. Soldiers and cops could just kill innocent people, burying many others alive. Some of the killers were his schoolmates, classmates, neighbors, or friends. Others were their parents or siblings. Victims were his relatives, friends, or just acquaintances; and they were of all ages. Professionals were the main targets of the Evildoers. Assailants and their victims had much in common. They were human beings, and they were Burundians. Most importantly, they were created in the same image of God. As innocent civilians, including his own family, were either killed or sent into hiding, Jacob strived to make a change. His life journey took him into many dangerous situations, escaping certain death on several occasions. He crossed the borders, lakes, and oceans to seek asylum in foreign countries, only to see that, once our basic needs are met, we will always strive for more, ultimately seeking peace and love. After struggling in numerous refugee camps, where he often slept under the open sky, Jacob had finally had enough. Now already an adult and a father, he was determined that his children would live a different life away from hatred and injustice. Still, by moving to Canada a land of living blue skies, as he liked to call it he did not find life a rose as he hoped. Thus, Nikita Chissocco, his childhood friend, seemed to be a dream come true. She epitomized the joy he had lost a link to his homeland, a friend, a lover, and a mother to his future children. Little did he know that she would only bring misery to his life. Always a free spirit, she soon brought his old enemies into his life, threatening his family but also his very life. Jacob decided to end the upsetting games by chasing demons from his house. And you, how far are you prepared to go in order to fulfill your dreams?

Book excerpt: Of all the teams in the annals of baseball, only a select few can lay claim to historic significance. One of those teams is the 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers, the first racially integrated Major League team of the twentieth century. The addition of Jackie Robinson to its roster changed not only baseball but also the nation. Yet Robinson was just one member of that memorable club, which included Carl Furillo, Gil Hodges, Pee Wee Reese, Pete Reiser, Duke Snider, Eddie Stanky, Arky Vaughan, and Dixie Walker. Also present was a quartet of baseball’s most unforgettable characters: co-owners Branch Rickey and Walter O’Malley, suspended manager Leo Durocher, and radio announcer Red Barber. This book is the first to offer biographies of everyone on that incomparable team as well as accounts of the moments and events that marked the Dodgers’ 1947 season: Commissioner Happy Chandler suspending Durocher, Rickey luring his old friend Burt Shotton out of retirement to replace Durocher, and brilliant outfielder Reiser being sidelined after running into a fence. In spite of all this, the Dodgers went on to win the National League pennant over the heavily favored St. Louis Cardinals. And of course, there is the biggest story of the season, where history and biography coalesce: Jackie Robinson, who overcame widespread hostility to become Rookie of the Year—and to help the Dodgers set single-game attendance records in cities around the National League.

It is a report about how we get consumers and clinicians to use these tools, how we pay for them, and what we want the computers to do. But computers are only a tool, a means to an end. We have focused this report on computers because they seem to be the best tool--and maybe the only tool--that will allow the nation to change the way healthcare works... This report articulates a vision of an information-connected healthcare system, where consumers' privacy is protected and their convenience facilitated, where doctors and nurses have the information they need to efficiently deliver safe and effective care, where our public health and homeland security can be protected while still guarding each individual's privacy. The report recommends specific actions and broader policy objectives, all with the goal of allowing healthcare to effectively use computers and information technology. If followed, the Commission's recommendations will accelerate healthcare's transformation." [From Foreword].

Book excerpt: Now a Netflix movie directed by Mike Flanagan (Oculus, Hush) and starring Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood. Master storyteller Stephen King presents this classic, terrifying #1 New York Times bestseller. When a game of seduction between a husband and wife ends in death, the nightmare has only begun… “And now the voice which spoke belonged to no one but herself. Oh my God, it said. Oh my God, I am all alone out here. I am all alone.” Once again, Jessie Burlingame has been talked into submitting to her husband Gerald’s kinky sex games—something that she’s frankly had enough of, and they never held much charm for her to begin with. So much for a “romantic getaway” at their secluded summer home. After Jessie is handcuffed to the bedposts—and Gerald crosses a line with his wife—the day ends with deadly consequences. Now Jessie is utterly trapped in an isolated lakeside house that has become her prison—and comes face-to-face with her deepest, darkest fears and memories. Her only company is that of the various voices filling her mind…as well as the shadows of nightfall that may conceal an imagined or very real threat right there with her…

Book excerpt: An Entertainment Weekly Top 10 Romance of 2018! I'm not a good man, and I've never pretended to be. I don't believe in goodness or God or any happy ending that isn't paid for in advance. In fact, I've got my own personal holy trinity: in the name of money, sex, and Macallan 18, amen. So when the gorgeous, brilliant Zenny Iverson asks me to teach her about sex, I want to say yes, I really do. Unfortunately, there are several reasons to say no--reasons that even a very bad man like myself can't ignore. 1. She's my best friend's little sister. 2. She's too young for me. Like way too young. 3. She's a nun. Or about to be anyway. But I want her. I want her even with my best friend and God in the way, I want to teach her and touch her and love her, and I know that makes me something much worse than a very bad man. It makes me a sinner. And it's those very sins that are about to save me... ***Sinner is a standalone companion to Priest about Father Bell's brother Sean. Eric disappeared when he was three years old. Ben looked away for only a second at the grocery store, but that was all it took. His brother was gone. Vanished into the sticky air of the Florida Panhandle. Five years later, Ben is still looking for his brother. Still searching, while his stepmother sits and waits and whispers for Eric, refusing to leave the house that Ben's father can no longer afford. Now twenty and desperate for work, Ben takes a job on the night stock crew at the only place that will have him: the store that blinked Eric out of existence. Ben can feel there's something wrong there. With the people. With his boss. With the graffitied baler that shudders and groans and beckons. But he's in the right place. He knows the store has much to show him, so he keeps searching. Except Ben misses the most important thing of all. That he should have stopped looking.

Book excerpt: There have been huge advances in our ability to diagnose autism and in the development of effective interventions that can change children’s lives. In this extraordinary book, Lynn Kern Koegel, a leading clinician, researcher, and cofounder of the renowned Autism Research Center at the University of California at Santa Barbara, combines her cutting-edge expertise with the everyday perspectives of Claire LaZebnik, a writer whose experience with a son with autism provides a rare window into the disorder. Together, they draw on the highly effective “pivotal response” approach developed at the center to provide concrete ways of improving the symptoms of autism and the emotional struggles that surround it, while reminding readers never to lose sight of the humor that lurks in the disability’s quirkiness or the importance of enjoying your child. From the shock of diagnosis to the step-by-step work with verbal communication, social interaction, self-stimulation, meltdowns, fears, and more, the answers are here-in a book that is as warm and nurturing as it is authoritative.
