Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The region of Bihar is one of the great foci of Indian history. From before the days of Buddha it was a major centre of Indian Political life and the most significant cultural centres, especially in respect of Buddhism. Hitherto the student of Ancient India has been rather badly provided with geographical and topographical studies. Dr. M.S. Pandey has made a very significance contribution to the subject. The author has ransacked a very large range of sources for information and has produced a survey of the subject which may in many respects serve as a model to students working on other regions of India. The chapter helps in understanding the geographical forces behind historical events of the state. The author has dealt very scholarly the Historical outlines; mountain systems; river systems, regions & districts, place-names, communications etc. The book is written with scholarly acumen and clarity and is very evidently the work of a man with a deep affection for his native land.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: During the reign of Aurangzeb, Bihar had the status of an independent administrative unit of the Mughal Empire. The Bihar governors then were in no way subordinate to the governors of Bengal. After Fakhr-ud-Dowla, its last independent governor, Bihar was, however, annexed to the Bengal Suba and it remained as an appanage of Bengal thereafter for about 200 years (1733 to 1912). The battle of Giria in 1740 made Alivardi the undisputed ruler of Bengal and Bihar, and was succeeded by Siraj-ud-Dowla in 1765. The period between 1757 and 1765 was marked by the growth of the British influence in Bengal and Bihar also was thereby exposed to the same influence. The leading officers and Zamindars of Bihar were, however, not prepared to accept the new challenge: they opposed to the English dominance over Bihar and fought single-handedly against the English before allowing Bihar to go the Bengal way. After the receipt of Clive, of the Diwani Grant over Bengal, Bihar and Orissa on August 12, 1765 from Shah Alam II, the unfortunate and shadowy Emperor of Delhi, the East India Company got a definite legal status in the system of the Mughal Empire and another phase of Bihari resistance began. During the period when Raja Shitab Roy was the Naib Nizam of Bihar the Zamindars of Seres and Cotomba and Maharajah Fatah Sahi of Husainpur, fought against the company's troops but they lost against heavy odds. The author has described these various Bihari resistances and also the company's exploits in Bihar prior to their acceptance of direct responsibility for the administration of the province in 1772 after the infamous Bengal famine of 1770.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology" is a significant reference work on archaeology in India. It is an authoritative work of permanent value in which the knowledge and expertise of Indian archaeologists from the Archaeological Survey of India, universities and other institutes have been pooled together under the editorship of the late A. Ghosh, former Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India. The "Encyclopaedia" has been planned in an ambitious manner; it is not merely an alphabetical listing of entries with sketchy information on topics. Volume 1, which deals with certain broad subjects relating to Indian Archaeology, is divided into twenty chapters, alphabetically arranged. Each chapter is further divided into sections and subsections containing independent and self-contained essays. For example, in the chapter on "Cultures," detailed information can be found on various cultures in India; the chapter on "Basis of dating" contains articles on archaeological dating, archaeomagnetic dating, 14C radio-carbon dating, numismatic dating, palaeographic and epigraphic dating, thermoluminescent dating, etc. For those interested in getting further information on the subjects and in looking into the original sources and references, each entry also carries an exhaustive bibliography. Volume II is the Gazetteer. It contains basic data and information on all the explored and excavated sites in India along with reference to published reports and/or notices on each.
