Book excerpt: Excerpt from Empresses of France In the course of extended researches into the history of France, I first became aware of the fact that neither in French nor in English does there exist any brief yet comprehensive work giving the lives of the Queens and Empresses. The lack of such a book having proved a great annoyance to me, I felt it would perchance assist other students were I to weave my copious notes into consecutive narratives which would also interest the general public. While the Queens of France are very numerous and often insignificant, the Empresses are three women of note, whose lives extend over more than a century. As their sayings and doings form an important part of the stirring history of their time, it has seemed best to give them a volume to themselves. Josephine, Marie Louise, and Eugenie are names which call to mind endless pageants and touching or dramatic scenes, which historians, novelists, poets, and playwrights have already used in their works, and will doubtless use again. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eugénie: Empress of the French Was it worth the doing? In these days, looking back over her career, all she can say is: I am the past. I am the distant horizon where exists a mirage, a shadow, a phantom, a living sorrow. I am an old woman, poor in everything that makes a woman rich. My husband, my son - that brave boy they are gone. My eyes no longer turn to the future. I live only in my youth. There is nothing for me but to wait. My dreary winter is nearly over. Poor Eugénie! That she still Clings to the hope of seeing a descendant of Napoleon on the throne of France is evidenced by a letter to an old soldier who recently appealed to her for help, In which she says: As her majesty admits that every old soldier of the empire has remained faithful to the sacred cause, to the imperial eagles, it is necessary so that her majesty may be assured of a devotion of which she or rather the legitimate heir to the throne - will perhaps have need sooner than one thinks, that she receives from u a letter in which she will find the expression ur unshaka devotion to the memory of Napoleon iic to the Imperial cause, as well as the exprésssjbtni your mistrust oi the present regime' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. One was the illusory French victory at Saarbrucken, when the boy Prince first saw the realities of war another, the day long combat round Sedan, described in these pages by the Emperor Napoleon himself. I owe this document to the good offices of M. Adrien Hebrard, Editor of the Temps. To M. Gaston Calmette, Editor of the Figaro, I am doubly indebted first, for his eloquent and couvin cing defence of the Empress Eugenie; and, next, for M. Lucien Alphonse Baudet's picture of the Empress in her Hampshire home - a romantic narrative, fascina ting alike by its poetical charm and its verisimilitude, and worthy of the distinguished name of its creator. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last Empress of the French, Being the Life of the Empress Eugénie, Wife of Napoleon III On the fifth anniversary of the death of Napoleon Bonaparte at Saint Helena, the 5th May 1826, an earthquake disturbed the city of Granada, in Southern Spain. At the time of the occurrence a lady was sitting in the garden of her husband's house in the Calle de Gracia. The shock brought about the premature birth of the child whom she was expecting; and thus came into the world one who was to sit beside Napoleon's successor in the interrupted history of the French Imperial throne. For a large portion of her early years this child was known simply as Eugenia Palafox, but in her baptismal register she appears as Maria Eugenia Ignacia Augustina, daughter of Don Cipriano Guzman Palafox y Portocarrero, Count of Teba, and of his wife, Maria Manuela Kirkpatrick y Grevignée. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women of the Last Days of Old France The Sketches of Madame Lebrun and Madame d'ab rantes originally appeared in a magazine they are now given in a much enlarged form. They were written when the name of F rance - of Paris - could be heard without the unutterable regret which they now awaken. At a time when events of European, or rather, of world-wide importance, have occupied all minds, it seems almost an impertinence to offer to the public so slight a work, but it is a contribution to the history of that past, without knowing which we shall try in vain to comprehend the present.
