Book Synopsis Probability Approximations and Beyond by : Andrew Barbour
Download or read book Probability Approximations and Beyond written by Andrew Barbour and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-07 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 2010, a conference, Probability Approximations and Beyond, was held at the National University of Singapore (NUS), in honor of pioneering mathematician Louis Chen. Chen made the first of several seminal contributions to the theory and application of Stein’s method. One of his most important contributions has been to turn Stein’s concentration inequality idea into an effective tool for providing error bounds for the normal approximation in many settings, and in particular for sums of random variables exhibiting only local dependence. This conference attracted a large audience that came to pay homage to Chen and to hear presentations by colleagues who have worked with him in special ways over the past 40+ years. The papers in this volume attest to how Louis Chen’s cutting-edge ideas influenced and continue to influence such areas as molecular biology and computer science. He has developed applications of his work on Poisson approximation to problems of signal detection in computational biology. The original papers contained in this book provide historical context for Chen’s work alongside commentary on some of his major contributions by noteworthy statisticians and mathematicians working today.

Book Synopsis Inference for Heavy-Tailed Data by : Liang Peng
Download or read book Inference for Heavy-Tailed Data written by Liang Peng and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-08-11 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heavy tailed data appears frequently in social science, internet traffic, insurance and finance. Statistical inference has been studied for many years, which includes recent bias-reduction estimation for tail index and high quantiles with applications in risk management, empirical likelihood based interval estimation for tail index and high quantiles, hypothesis tests for heavy tails, the choice of sample fraction in tail index and high quantile inference. These results for independent data, dependent data, linear time series and nonlinear time series are scattered in different statistics journals. Inference for Heavy-Tailed Data Analysis puts these methods into a single place with a clear picture on learning and using these techniques. - Contains comprehensive coverage of new techniques of heavy tailed data analysis - Provides examples of heavy tailed data and its uses - Brings together, in a single place, a clear picture on learning and using these techniques
Book Synopsis Heavy-Tailed Time Series by : Rafal Kulik
Download or read book Heavy-Tailed Time Series written by Rafal Kulik and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-01 with total page 677 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to present a comprehensive, self-contained, and concise overview of extreme value theory for time series, incorporating the latest research trends alongside classical methodology. Appropriate for graduate coursework or professional reference, the book requires a background in extreme value theory for i.i.d. data and basics of time series. Following a brief review of foundational concepts, it progresses linearly through topics in limit theorems and time series models while including historical insights at each chapter’s conclusion. Additionally, the book incorporates complete proofs and exercises with solutions as well as substantive reference lists and appendices, featuring a novel commentary on the theory of vague convergence.
Book Synopsis Introduction to Empirical Processes and Semiparametric Inference by : Michael R. Kosorok

This book was released on 2007-12-29 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kosorok’s brilliant text provides a self-contained introduction to empirical processes and semiparametric inference. These powerful research techniques are surprisingly useful for developing methods of statistical inference for complex models and in understanding the properties of such methods. This is an authoritative text that covers all the bases, and also a friendly and gradual introduction to the area. The book can be used as research reference and textbook.
Book Synopsis Empirical Process Techniques for Dependent Data by : Herold Dehling
Download or read book Empirical Process Techniques for Dependent Data written by Herold Dehling and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empirical process techniques for independent data have been used for many years in statistics and probability theory. These techniques have proved very useful for studying asymptotic properties of parametric as well as non-parametric statistical procedures. Recently, the need to model the dependence structure in data sets from many different subject areas such as finance, insurance, and telecommunications has led to new developments concerning the empirical distribution function and the empirical process for dependent, mostly stationary sequences. This work gives an introduction to this new theory of empirical process techniques, which has so far been scattered in the statistical and probabilistic literature, and surveys the most recent developments in various related fields. Key features: A thorough and comprehensive introduction to the existing theory of empirical process techniques for dependent data * Accessible surveys by leading experts of the most recent developments in various related fields * Examines empirical process techniques for dependent data, useful for studying parametric and non-parametric statistical procedures * Comprehensive bibliographies * An overview of applications in various fields related to empirical processes: e.g., spectral analysis of time-series, the bootstrap for stationary sequences, extreme value theory, and the empirical process for mixing dependent observations, including the case of strong dependence. To date this book is the only comprehensive treatment of the topic in book literature. It is an ideal introductory text that will serve as a reference or resource for classroom use in the areas of statistics, time-series analysis, extreme value theory, point process theory, and applied probability theory. This book was released on 2004 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Limit theorems for stochastic processes are an important part of probability theory and mathematical statistics and one model that has attracted the attention of many researchers working in the area is that of limit theorems for randomly stopped stochastic processes. This volume is the first to present a state-of-the-art overview of this field, with many of the results published for the first time. It covers the general conditions as well as the basic applications of the theory, and it covers and demystifies the vast, and technically demanding, Russian literature in detail. A survey of the literature and an extended bibliography of works in the area are also provided. The coverage is thorough, streamlined and arranged according to difficulty for use as an upper-level text if required. It is an essential reference for theoretical and applied researchers in the fields of probability and statistics that will contribute to the continuing extensive studies in the area and remain relevant for years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extreme value theory (EVT) deals with extreme (rare) events, which are sometimes reported as outliers. Certain textbooks encourage readers to remove outliers-in other words, to correct reality if it does not fit the model. Recognizing that any model is only an approximation of reality, statisticians are eager to extract information about unknown di
