Book Synopsis The Censor's Notebook by : Liliana Corobca
Download or read book The Censor's Notebook written by Liliana Corobca and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2022-11-08 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating narrative of life in communist Romania, and a thought-provoking meditation on the nature of literature and censorship. Winner of the 2023 Oxford Weidenfeld Translation Prize A Censor’s Notebook is a window into the intimate workings of censorship under communism, steeped in mystery and secrets and lies, confirming the power of literature to capture personal and political truths. The novel begins with a seemingly non-fiction frame story—an exchange of letters between the author and Emilia Codrescu, the female chief of the Secret Documents Office in Romania’s feared State Directorate of Media and Printing, the government branch responsible for censorship. Codrescu had been responsible for the burning and shredding of the censors’ notebooks and the state secrets in them, but prior to fleeing the country in 1974 she had stolen one of these notebooks. Now, forty years later, she makes the notebook available to Liliana, the character of the author, for the newly instituted Museum of Communism. The work of a censor—a job about which it is forbidden to talk—is revealed in this notebook, which discloses the structures of this mysterious institution and describes how these professional readers and ideological error hunters are burdened with hundreds of manuscripts, strict deadlines, and threatening penalties. The censors lose their identity, and are often frazzled by neuroses and other illnesses.

Book excerpt: Emilia Stark never thought she'd become a celebrity by editing books, but she also never thought she'd be using magic to do it. Her clients' success, coupled with her own mysterious nature, have brought her nationwide attention as well as a waiting list that has some hopeful authors waiting years. Despite her fame, her methods are kept safe by the curious fact that every writer who has tried to expose her secret to the world has found themselves suddenly unable to speak. Outside her work, Emilia's biggest challenge is putting herself through school, where she gets into frequent arguments with the fictional characters in her reading assignments. She also struggles to manage her relationship with her opinionated former tutor, a man named Alexander Fox whose constant experimenting with magic trapped him forever inside a college-ruled notebook. Emilia's fame has brought her adversaries, most of whom are determined to figure out her secret at all costs, and most of whom she completely ignores. But when other people with magical abilities start disappearing around the world and threatening notes start appearing on her doorstep, Emilia begins to worry — especially once she realizes she is the final target.

Book Synopsis Material Culture and (Forced) Migration by : Friedemann Yi-Neumann
Download or read book Material Culture and (Forced) Migration written by Friedemann Yi-Neumann and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2022-02-17 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Material Culture and (Forced) Migration argues that materiality is a fundamental dimension of migration. During journeys of migration, people take things with them, or they lose, find and engage things along the way. Movements themselves are framed by objects such as borders, passports, tents, camp infrastructures, boats and mobile phones. This volume brings together chapters that are based on research into a broad range of movements – from the study of forced migration and displacement to the analysis of retirement migration. What ties the chapters together is the perspective of material culture and an understanding of materiality that does not reduce objects to mere symbols. Centring on four interconnected themes – temporality and materiality, methods of object-based migration research, the affective capacities of objects, and the engagement of things in place-making practices – the volume provides a material culture perspective for migration scholars around the globe, representing disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, contemporary archaeology, curatorial studies, history and human geography. The ethnographic nature of the chapters and the focus on everyday objects and practices will appeal to all those interested in the broader conditions and tangible experiences of migration.

This book was released on 2008-04-08 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the nation's leading authorities on constitutional law shows how the Supreme Court's dramatic shift to the right on the most important legal issues of our time reflects a rigid Republican ideological agenda that is profoundly altering our freedoms and our country. " Expert analysis: Drawing largely on cases he has argued, Erwin Chemerinsky describes how rigid ideology has trumped reason in cases ranging from ;three strikes laws ; to laws limiting the ability of citizens to bring suit for damages and infringements on their liberties. He explains how the political right wing has been steadily eroding the constitutional barriers between church and state, fostering separate but unequal public schools, limiting civil liberties and affirmative action programs. Although many Americans are aware of this rightward shift on the Supreme Court, Chemerinsky shows how these changes have victimized ordinary citizens. " Timely subject will attract attention: With publication at the start of a new term for the Court and with a new justice joining it, The Conservative Assault on the Constitution will draw much attention, especially from political commentators. As a constitutional scholar, author of a leading textbook on constitutional law, and a frequent commentator on legal issues, Chemerinsky is certain to be in demand to comment on the Court's agenda for the coming term, in addition to the long-term trends that he discusses in his book.

Book excerpt: Twenty-one-year-old Andy Priest loves writing, except when she doesn’t. Still, she dreams of a far greater life, of big success—and perhaps, why not, of seeing her name on the cover of a best-selling book. She loves to daydream about far-fetched love tales too, which is the one thing Emilia Peterson inspires the moment Andy lays eyes on her on the night of her best friend’s birthday. An ambitious and compassionate med student, Emilia is everything Andy had ever dreamed of, and then some. Playing with the cards of fate and circumstance, the universe brings the two of them together, never with the guarantee that it should stay easy.
