Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing Reggio Emilia Home is the first book to integrate the experiences of one American teacher on a year-long internship in the preschools of Reggio, with a four-year adaptation effort in one American school. The lively text includes many "mini-stories" of preschool and kindergarten-age children, teachers, and parents who embark on journeys of learning together. These journeys take shape in language, in drawings, in tempera paint and clay, in outdoor excursions, and in the imaginations of both the children and adults. This informative and accessible work features photographs of the children (both in Italy and the United States) and samples of the children’s work, including some in full colour. During the past 10 years there has been a tremendous interest among early childhood educators and parents in the innovative approaches to teaching pioneered in the preschools of Reggio Emilia, Italy. This book is a must read for anyone interested in the Reggio Approach! Teachers, especially those in early childhood, teacher educators, policy makers, administrators, and parents will find it invaluable.

Book excerpt: 'A spicy work of biographical conjecture ... It's also a rousing reminder of the countless creative women who have been written out of history or have had to fight relentlessly to make themselves heard.' EVENING STANDARD 'The great virtue of Lloyd Malcolm's speculative history lies in its passion and anger: it ends with a blazing address to the audience that is virtually a call to arms. It is throughout, however, a highly theatrical piece ... In rescuing Emilia from the shades, [the play] gives her dramatic life and polemical potency.' GUARDIAN The little we know of Emilia Bassano Lanier (1569 - 1645) is that she may have been the Dark Lady of Shakespeare's Sonnets, mistress of Lord Chamberlain, one of the first English female poets to be published, a mother, teacher who founded a school for women, and radical feminist with North African ancestry. Living at a time when women had such limited opportunities, Emilia Lanier is therefore a fascinating subject for this speculative history. In telling her story, Morgan Lloyd Malcolm represents the stories of women everywhere whose narratives have been written out of history. Originally commissioned for Shakespeare's Globe with an all-female cast, Emilia is published here as a Methuen Drama Student Edition with commentary and notes by Elizabeth Schafer, Professor of Drama at Royal Holloway, University of London, UK.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reggio Emilia’s educational services for 0-6 year olds are widely acclaimed as one of the best systems in the world. Now in an updated second edition, In Dialogue with Reggio Emilia offers a collection of the most important articles, lectures and interviews given by Carlina Rinaldi, who was President of Reggio Children for a decade, and pedagogical director of the Reggio Emilia Infant-toddler Centres and Preschools after working closely with Loris Malaguzzi, Reggio Children founder and inspirer of the Reggio Emilia Approach. She is currently President of Fondazione Reggio Children – Centro Loris Malaguzzi. With a full introduction contextualising each piece of work, it offers a unique insight into many of the themes that characterise the early childhood curriculum of Reggio Emilia: participation, documentation and assessment; professional development; organisation; research; creativity; spaces and environments in education, and more. This second edition includes brand new chapters exploring the role of the Loris Malaguzzi International Centre; the natural complexity of becoming children; Rinaldi’s speech on receiving the LEGO prize; and Jerome Bruner’s friendship with the schools of Reggio Emilia and the author. A deeply personal book, this is an invaluable resource for practising teachers, students and researchers. It is essential reading for anybody looking to further their understanding of the Reggio Emilia philosophy and pedagogical practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This could be a charming little story of Peter and Katy growing up out in the country with their children, Emilia, Addison (Addy), and various animals. It could be that, but it isn’t for several reasons. Emilia is actually a fairy princess that has been given to Peter and Katy to raise for her first twenty-five years by the fairy queen and fairy king. They want her to learn all about humans because, in reality, fairies do live among us and need to understand all things human. Peter and Katy are sworn to secrecy and asked not to reveal Emilia’s true nature to her until later. Emilia discovers her powers and abilities somewhat haphazardly as she needs them. Her parents tell her that her abilities must remain a secret. Alas, not everyone has wings. She must be cautious because there are those who hunt fairies for sinister purposes. She is provided with a massive enchanted elk named Hercules for protection. Hercules’s only weakness is Baby Ruth candy bars! He is later joined by a Belgian Malinois named Max as Emilia goes to college and discovers her destiny and a legendary secret. This book has kindness, love, friendship, adversity, faith, danger, perseverance, and excitement woven through it. I hope you enjoy Emilia and her family’s story!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loris Malaguzzi was one of the most important figures in 20th century early childhood education, achieving world-wide recognition for his educational ideas and his role in the creation of municipal schools for young children in the Italian city of Reggio Emilia, the most successful example ever of progressive, democratic and public education. Despite Malaguzzi’s reputation, very little of what he wrote or said about early childhood education has been available in English. This book helps fill the gap, presenting for the first time in English, writings and speeches spanning 1945 to 1993, selected by a group of his colleagues from an archive established in Reggio Emilia. They range from short poems, letters and newspaper articles to extended pieces about Malaguzzi’s early life, the origins of the municipal schools and his ideas about children, pedagogy and schools. This material is organised into five chronological chapters, starting at the end of World War Two and ending just before his death, with introductions to each chapter providing background, including the historical context, the main events in Malaguzzi’s life and the rationale for the selection of documents. The book provides a unique insight into the background, thinking and work of Malaguzzi, revealing, in his own words, how his thinking developed, how he moved between theory and practice, how he border-crossed many disciplines and subjects, and how he combined many roles ranging from administrator and campaigner to researcher and pedagogue. Academics, students and practitioners alike will find this landmark publication provides rich insights into his life and work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Role of the Pedagogista in Reggio Emilia offers unparalleled insight into dialectic encounters between teachers, pedagogistas, and atelieristas in the world-renowned municipal early childhood services of the city of Reggio Emilia. It sheds light on the system and culture that cares for and sustains an enduring educational experience, for the common good. Emerging from a collaborative research project with Reggio Children and the Preschools and Infant-toddler Centres – Istituzione of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, this book features in-depth observations of pedagogistas, teachers, and atelieristas, as well as interviews with key figures in Reggio Emilia. Children’s learning is thoughtfully emphasised, as the authors render the inextricable connection between theory-practice-research, framing documentation and progettazione as artful collective experimentation. The authors illuminate how Reggio Emilia’s system sustains reciprocal professional formation through progettazione, contesting dominant marketplace discourses of early childhood education as a commodity and re-imagining settings driven by values of reciprocity, artistry, culture, and the common good. By troubling conventional views on education and care, professionalism of teachers, and educational leadership, this book will appeal to all those who long for something different and hope to shift the field of possibility for early childhood education culturally, socially, pedagogically, and politically. It will be a key resource for teachers, leaders, policy makers, and scholars in the whole field of education.
