Herausgearbeitet werden sollen vor allem die androgynen und emanzipatorischen Motive des Romans. Während Androgynie heute noch relativ ähnlich definiert wird wie zu Schlegels Zeiten, hat der Begriff der Emanzipation insbesondere der Frauenemanzipation einen deutlichen Bedeutungswandel erfahren. Das liegt vor allem daran, dass die eigentliche Frauenbewegung nach der Französischen Revolution noch in den Kinderschuhen steckte und sich die Rolle der Frau in der Gesellschaft im Laufe der Zeit deutlich gewandelt hat. Darum wird im ersten Teil der Hausarbeit vor allem auf das Frauenbild und -ideal des 18. Jahrhunderts eingegangen. Anschließend soll das Frauen- und Männerbild in Schlegels Roman mit den gängigen Vorstellungen verglichen werden. Hervorgehoben werden vor allem die Abweichungen von den gesellschaftlichen Konventionen, die das Werk zu einem Skandal werden ließen. Nicht unschuldig an der negativen Rezeption des Werkes ist wohl auch die Ähnlichkeit mit Schlegels eigenem Liebesleben, weshalb dieses in einem eigenen Kapitel kurz vorgestellt werden soll. Am Ende der „Lehrjahre der Männlichkeit“ entwirft Schlegel zudem eine für das 18. Jahrhundert außergewöhnliche Form einer Liebesbeziehung, in der Sinnen- und Seelenliebe vereint sind. Diese Beziehung soll ebenfalls kurz vor- und den gängigen Beziehungen gegenübergestellt werden. Ein weiterer Teil der Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit den androgynen Motiven der „Lucinde“. Es soll vor allem geklärt werden, ob und inwieweit es sich hierbei um echte Androgynität handelt und auf die Funktion dieser Motive eingegangen werden. Das letzte Kapitel und damit die Schlussbetrachtung enthält die kritischen Frage, ob bei Schlegels „Lucinde“ überhaupt von einem emanzipatorischen Werk die Rede sein kann und wenn ja, inwiefern sich diese Emanzipation durch die im Roman vertretene Androgynie verwirklichen lässt.

Beim ersten Text handelt es sich um das im Jahr 1975 erschienene Buch HÄUTUNGEN der Schweizer Autorin Verena Stefan. Es enthält autobiografische Züge, Träume, Wünsche, Lebensrealitäten und Gedichte gleichermaßen. Das zweite Werk ist KASSANDRA von Christa Wolf. In ihrer 1983 erschienenen Neuinterpretation des antiken Kassandra-Mythos setzt Wolf den Fokus auf die Frau als Protagonistin. Da in der Literatur vorrangig Männer sowohl als Protagonisten der Erzählungen als auch als Autoren, Verleger, Kritiker oder Buchhändler anzutreffen sind und der allgemeine Literaturkanon doch zum größten Teil Texte umfasst, deren Autor ein Mann ist, stehen in dieser Arbeit bewusst zwei Werke von Frauen im Mittelpunkt. Anhand dieser soll aufgezeigt werden, dass es immer schon Autorinnen gab, auch wenn sie nicht wahrgenommen wurden. Dabei stellt sich die Frage, wie sehr die zunehmenden schreiberischen Tätigkeiten der Frauen in den 1970er und `80er Jahren (beispielsweise in den beiden Texten von Stefan und Wolf) mit der Emanzipations-bewegung und dem Geist der damaligen Zeit an sich verzahnt sind. Obwohl in unserer Zeit das Ungleichgewicht zwischen männlichen und weiblichen Autoren seit den Anfängen weiblicher Autorenschaft deutlich abgenommen hat, ist auch heute noch die Rede vom „Skandal weiblicher Autorschaft“: Bezog sich dieser Begriff um 1800 noch auf ein erstes Eindringen der Frauen in das von Männern dominierte Schriftwesen, wird heute vielmehr eine Revision des (männlichen) Literaturkanons und der Epochenbegriffe angestrebt. In dieser Arbeit wird nun aus der Sicht von zwei beteiligten Autorinnen und Protagonistinnen der lange Weg der Emanzipation herausgearbeitet und versucht, die Parallelen zwischen der Darstellung von Welt in den Texten, von denen einer in der Antike und einer inmitten der Neuen Frauenbewegung (in Folge der 1968er Jahre) spielt, aufzugreifen. Es soll u. a. die Frage beantwortet werden, wie die Autorinnen der Literatur der Neuen Frauenbewegung Verena Stefan und Christa Wolf (als marginalisierte Schriftstellerinnen) mit ihren exemplarischen Werken HÄUTUNGEN und KASSANDRA die (jahrhundertelange) Emanzipation der Frau in Wort, Schrift und Tat darstellen.

Rather than producing texts for a primarily national readership, modern writers can collate diverse cultural, literary, and linguistic traditions to create new modes of expression that she designates as "hybrid texts." The author introduces an innovative framework to analyse these new forms of expression that is based on comparative cultural studies and its methodology of contextual (systemic and empirical) approaches to the study of literature and culture, including the concepts of the macro-and micro-systems of culture and literature. To illustrate her proposition, Sturm-Trigonakis discusses selected literary texts that exhibit characteristics of linguistic and cultural hybridity, the concept of "in-between," and transculturality and thus are located in a space of a "new world literature." Examples include Gastarbeiterliteratur ("migrant literature") by authors such as Chiellino, Shami, and Atabay. The book is important reading for philologists, linguists, sociologists, and other scholars interested in the cultural and linguistic impact of globalization on literature and culture. The German edition of this volume was originally published as Global playing in der Literatur. Ein Versuch über die Neue Weltliteratur (2007) and it has been translated in collaboration with the author by Athanasia Margoni and Maria Kaisar.

Book excerpt: It has been shown that the total number of women who published in German in the 18th and 19th centuries was approximately 3,500, but even by 1918 only a few of them were known. The reason for this lies in the selection processes to which the authors have been subjected, and it is this selection process that is the focus of the research here presented. The selection criteria have not simply been gender-based but have had much to do with the urgent quest for establishing a German Nation State in 1848 and beyond. Prutz, Gottschall, Kreyßig and others found it necessary to use literary historiography, which had been established by 1835, in order to construct an ideal of ‘Germanness’ at a time when a political unity remained absent, and they wove women writers into this plot. After unification in 1872, this kind of weaving seemed to have become less pressing, and other discourses came to the fore, especially those revolving round femininity vs. masculinity, and races. The study of the processes at work here will enhance current debates about the literary canon by tracing its evolution and identifying the factors which came to determine the visibility or obscurity of particular authors and texts. The focus will be on a number of case studies, but, instead of isolating questions of gender, Gender, Canon and Literary History will discuss the broader cultural context.
