Book excerpt: The flagship monograph addressing the spheroidal wave function and its pertinence to computational electromagnetics Spheroidal Wave Functions in Electromagnetic Theory presents in detail the theory of spheroidal wave functions, its applications to the analysis of electromagnetic fields in various spheroidal structures, and provides comprehensive programming codes for those computations. The topics covered in this monograph include: Spheroidal coordinates and wave functions Dyadic Green's functions in spheroidal systems EM scattering by a conducting spheroid EM scattering by a coated dielectric spheroid Spheroid antennas SAR distributions in a spheroidal head model The programming codes and their applications are provided online and are written in Mathematica 3.0 or 4.0. Readers can also develop their own codes according to the theory or routine described in the book to find subsequent solutions of complicated structures. Spheroidal Wave Functions in Electromagnetic Theory is a fundamental reference for scientists, engineers, and graduate students practicing modern computational electromagnetics or applied physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended to facilitate the use and calculation of spheroidal wave functions, this applications-oriented text features a detailed and unified account of the properties of these functions. Addressed to applied mathematicians, mathematical physicists, and mathematical engineers, it presents tables that provide a convenient means for handling wave problems in spheroidal coordinates. Topics include separation of the scalar wave equation in spheroidal coordinates, angle and radial functions, integral representations and relations, and expansions in spherical Bessel function products. Additional subjects include recurrence relations of Whittaker type, asymptotic expansions for large values of c, and vector wave functions. The text concludes with an appendix, references, and tables of numerical values.

Book excerpt: Mathieu functions are employed in solving a variety of problems in mathematic (al?) physics. In many cases the configuration involves elliptical coordinates. Of course, the circular geometry is the degenerate case of the elliptical cross section. This volume contains values for, and curves of the angular and radial Mathieu functions and their first derivatives. The latter are often needed in the solution of problems, in particular in solving electromagnetic wave propagation problems. Also included are data on zero crossings of the radial Mathieu functions. These are often needed for determining the cut-off frequencies for propagating modes. Other tables are available for the Mathieu functions, but there is very little data available for derivatives or zero crossings. It is felt that the principal value of this volume is in the multitude of curves included. The analyst dealing with elliptical cases can, by inspection of the curves, find values of the functions and derivatives at the origin, maxima and minima, zero crossings, and qualitative behavior of the plots as a function of several parameters. To the authors knowledge, this is the most extensive presentation of plotted information. It is hoped that the information will be helpful in the solution of practical problems. This book is divided into two sections. Section I deals only with the functions themselves, defining the equations and terminology used and presenting the tabular data and curves. Section II treats the derivatives and the zeros. Again the terminology and equations for the first derivatives are given. The Mathieu functions are named after Emile L. Mathieu (1835-1890), a French mathematician, who in 1868 published an article dealing with vibratory movement of the elliptic membrane. The asteroid 27947 Emilemathieu is named in his honor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical Foundations of Technical Acoustics discusses theoretical foundations of acoustical engineering. It is not so much a technical compendium as a systematic statement of physical laws so conceived that technologists might find in it all the information they need to become acquainted with the physical meaning and mathematical expression of phenomena they encounter in their work. To facilitate the acquirement of notions, which lie beyond a layman's grasp, the plan of narration adopted consists in beginning with the simplest idealized cases and then gradually moving on to the truest possible picture of real phenomena. Thus, the first part of the book, dealing with the acoustic field, begins with lossless fluid media, and passes then through perfectly elastic solid media to the real ones, showing losses and relaxations. In the second part, discussing the acoustical systems, the reader is led up from the simplest vibrating system with one degree of freedom to inhomogeneous spatial systems. Classical problems of theoretical acoustics are linked to the questions which appeared still to be the subjects of research. A special chapter has been written to deal with nonlinear acoustics, in consideration of continually growing applications of the acoustic fields of high intensity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research and scientific progress are based upqn intuition coordinated with a wide theoretical knowledge, experimental skill, and a realistic sense of the limitations of technology. Only a deep insight into physical phenomena will supply the necessary skills to handle the problems that arise in acoustics. The acoustician today needs to be well acquainted with mathematics, dynamics, hydrodynamics, and physics; he also needs a good knowledge of statistics, signal processing, electrical theory, and of many other specialized subjects. Acquiring this background is a laborious task and would require the study of many different books. It is the goal of this volume to present this background in as thorough and readable a manner as possible so that the reader may turn to specialized publications or chapters of other books for further information without having to start at the preliminaries. In trying to accomplish this goal, mathematics serves only as a tool; the better our understanding of a physical phenomenon, the less mathematics is needed and the shorter and more concise are our computa tions. A word about the choice of subjects for this volume will be helpful to the reader. Even scientists of high standing are frequently not acquainted with the fundamentals needed in the field of acoustics. Chapters I to IX are devoted to these fundamentals. After studying Chapter I, which dis cusses the units and their relationships, the reader should have no difficulty converting from one system of units to any other.
