Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Mental Philosophy, Vol. 1 of 2: Embracing the Two Departments of the Intellect and the Sensibilities It has already been intimated, that the method of inquiry which is pursued is rather inductive than speculative. In other words, I have endeavoured in every case, where the nature of the inquiry admitted of it, to make well-asoer tained facts the basis of the conclusions which have been adapted. Furthermore, in selecting such facts, it has been an object to take those which not only had relation to the matter under discussion but which promised a de gree of interest to the reader, particularly to young minds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Mental Philosophy, Vol. 2 of 2: In Two Parts The attempt made in the following pages to determine the meaning of some of the principal terms employed in Philosophy, may, to some, appear an ambitious undertaking; while, to others, it may seem merely a verbal affair. If to emulate the Great of old he ambition, to that the author must plead guilty; for Aristotle himself composed a Philosophical Vocabulary; and, on the other hand, that the object of such a work is useful and dignified, will be allowed by those who are best acquainted with the difficulties of Philosophy. I may mention in particular two distinguished philosophers of the present day, who have thus expressed themselves. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Mental Philosophy: Abridged and Designed as a Text Book for Academies and High Schools It has been my desire and endeavor, ' to give a concise, but cor rect view of the prominent principles of Mental Philosophy, so far as they seemed at present to be settled. The statement of these principles is attended with a perspicuous summary of the facts and arguments, on which they are based; together with occasional re marks ou the objections, which have been made from time to time. In selecting facts in confirmation of the principles laid down, I have sought those, which not only had a relation to the point in hand, but which promised a degree of interest for young minds. Simplicity and uniformity of style has been aimed at, although in a few instan ces the statements of the writers referred to have been admitted with only slight variations, when it was thought they had been peculiarly happy in them. As my sole object was the good of young men, I did not feel at liberty to prejudice the general design, by rejecting the facts, arguments, and in some cases even the expressions of others. The Exposition of mind, occupying nearly half the work, is, for the most part, an abridgement of my two volumes on the subject. I have singled out, and put in conspicuous type, the leading positions and have given a sufficient number of examples to make them understood. It is not to be expected that the full effect of the larger exposition can be produced in the shorter still, there may be an occasional advantage in the more succinct presenta tion of complicated doctrines. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Psychology: In Three Parts It is now just four years since I published An Introduction to Mental Philosophy, which may be considered as a suitable preparation for the present Work. It appeared to me that before entering upon the thorny paths of metaphysical ground, it was highly desirable to pave the way by A Philosophical Vocabulary, which should endeavour to fix the meaning of the principal terms used in Philosophy, not in Mental Philo sophy only, but in every inquiry worthy of that name. Such are the terms, substance, qual ity, quantity, relation, cause and effect, law OF nature, principle, hypothesis and theory, science, and philosophy itself. Accordingly, such a Philosophical Vocabulary forms the First Part of the Introduction, which, but for the Second Part, which treats particularly of Mental Philosophy, might have been styled an Introduction to Philosophy in general. Download or read book The Elements of Intellectual Philosophy (Classic Reprint) written by Francis Wayland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Intellectual Philosophy Having been intended for oral delivery, they were, in many respects, modified by the circumstances of their origin. Hence, illustrations have been introduced more freely than would other wise have seemed necessary. In preparing them for the press, however, I was led to consider the class of persons for whose use they were principally designed. I remembered the dith culty of fixing definitely in the mind of the pupil the nature and limits of subjective truth; and therefore allowed my instruo tions to retain in general the form which they had previously assumed. Whether I have in this respect judged wisely, it is not for me to determine. I have not entered upon the discussion of many of the topics which have called into exercise the acumen of the ablest meta physicians. Intended to serve the purposes of a text-book, it was necessary that the volume should be compressed within a compass adapted to the time usually allotted to the study of this science in the colleges of our country. I have, therefore, attempted to present and illustrate the important truths in intel lectual philosophy, rather than the inferences which may be drawn from them, or the doctrines which they may presuppose. These may be pursued to any length, at the option of the teacher. If I have not entered upon these discussions, I hope that I have prepared the way for their more ample and truthful develop ment. It has been my desire to render this work an aid to mental improvement. For this purpose, I have added practical sug gestions on the cultivation of the several faculties. Earnest minded young men frequently err in their attempts at self-im provement. It has seemed to me, therefore, that a work of this kind would be manifestly imperfect, did it not directly, as well as indirectly, aid the student in his efforts to discipline and strengthen his intellectual energies. It is generally entered upon in our acado mies and colleges with reluctance, and relinquished with out regret. This aversion is not limited to the idle, but includes those, who know the value of time and the impor tance of mental improvement. The objections against the Philosophy of the Mind.
