Book excerpt: The electrolytic oxidation in nitric acid of stainless steel, zirconium, Zircaloy-2, zirconium- uranium alloy, aluminum, and uranium - molybdenum alloy was demonstrated on a laboratory scale. The rate of chemical dissolution of UO/ sub 2/ in nitric acid was measured. Corrosion of stainless steel by these dissolver solutions was measured and found to be negligible. Electrolytic dissolution was demonstrated to be a practical technique for the first step in processing fuel elements of several types of power reactors. (auth).

The rate of disintegration of Zircaloy-2 anodes in nitric acid did not vary with acid concentration. Nitric oxide, formaldehyde, and process solvent were found effective in reducing the corrosion of stainiess steel equipment that was caused by the chromate present in acid solutions containing d ssolved stainless steel. Means were developed to improve the contact between assembiles of stainless steel and the niobium basket of the semi-works dissolver, and fan average current of 3000 amperes was achieved. Zircaloy plates were anodically disintegrated at an average current of 1200 amperes. (auth).

Laboratory experiments were made to determine the important characteristics of this type of dissolver. Zirconium metal can be electrolytically disintegrated in HNO2 by the same technique: in this case 85% of the zirconium precipitates as ZrO2 and only 15% remains in solution. When Zr- 10% U alloy is electrolytically disintegrated in HNO3, 60 to 80% of the zirconium precipitates as ZrO2, carrying 10% or more of the uranium. The constituents of a charge of PRDC elements, zirconium and U- Mo alloy. were dissolved in a two-step process with HNO3 and HF.
