Book excerpt: Age of Promises explores the issue of electoral promises in twentieth century Britain - how they were made, how they were understood, and how they evolved across time - through a study of general election manifestos and election addresses. The authors argue that a history of the act of making promises - which is central to the political process, but which has not been sufficiently analysed - illuminates the development of political communication and democratic representation. The twentieth century saw a broad shift away from politics viewed as a discursive process whereby, at elections, it was enough to set out broad principles, with detailed policymaking to follow once in office following reflection and discussion. Over the first part of the century parties increasingly felt required to compile lists of specific policies to offer to voters, which they were then considered to have an obligation to carry out come what may. From 1945 onwards, moreover, there was even more focus on detailed, costed, pledges. We live in an age of growing uncertainty over the authority and status of political promises. In the wake of the 2016 EU referendum controversy erupted over parliamentary sovereignty. Should 'the will of the people' as manifested in the referendum result be supreme, or did MPs owe a primary responsibility to their constituents and/or to the party manifestos on which they had been elected? Age of Promises demonstrates that these debates build on a long history of differing understandings about what status of manifestos and addresses should have in shaping the actions of government.

Book Synopsis Black Market Britain by : Mark Roodhouse
Download or read book Black Market Britain written by Mark Roodhouse and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-03-21 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain's underground economy flourished during the 1940s and early 1950s thanks to rationing and price control, producers, traders, and professional criminals helped consumers to get a little extra on the side, from under the counter, or off the back of a lorry. Yet widespread evasion of regulations designed to ensure fair shares for all did not undermine the austerity policies that characterised these years and its vital role in securing compliance with economic regulation. In Black Market Britain, Mark Roodhouse argues that Britons showed self-restraint in their illegal dealings. The means, motives, and opportunities for evasion were not lacking. The shortages were real, regulations were not watertight, and enforcement was haphazard. Fairness, not patriotism and respect for the law, is the key to understanding this self-restraint. By invoking popular notions of a fair price, a fair profit, and a fair share, government rhetoric limited black marketeering as would-be evaders had to justify their offences both to themselves and others. Black Market Britain underlines the importance of fairness to those seeking a richer understanding of economic life in modern Britain.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this revisionist study, Jefferys challenges many long-held assumptions about British politics in the period between 1939 and 1945. Drawing on a range of unpublished sources, he challenges the notion of consensus as a guiding principle of politics in the 1940s and argues that wartime coalition masked the continuance of profound disagreements about the future direction of economic and social policy. Book Synopsis The British Conservative Party in the Age of Universal Suffrage by : Neal Robert McCrillis
Download or read book The British Conservative Party in the Age of Universal Suffrage written by Neal Robert McCrillis and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Conservative Party in the Age of Universal Suffrage is a study of how Britain's Conservative Party responded to universal suffrage, which passed in two installments, in 1918 and 1928. In particular, Neal R. McCrillis focuses on the development of the popular or mass party, which in the 1920s began to appeal to new voters. To increase its support, the Conservatives created organizations that enrolled more than one million women, who had only recently gained the right to vote, as well as young people and laborers. They also developed effective educational and propaganda methods that gave the party the edge in retaining supporters and winning elections.

Book excerpt: The passage of Citizens United by the Supreme Court in 2010 sparked a renewed debate about campaign spending by large political action committees, or Super PACs. Its ruling said that it is okay for corporations and labor unions to spend as much as they want in advertising and other methods to convince people to vote for or against a candidate. This book provides a wide range of opinions on the issue. Includes primary and secondary sources from a variety of perspectives; eyewitnesses, scientific journals, government officials, and many others.
