Book excerpt: The new, completely revised, and updated edition of this classic text --sponsored by the International Epidemiological Association (IEA) and previously edited by John Last-- remains the definitive dictionary in epidemiology worldwide. In fact, with contributions from over 220 epidemiologists and other users of epidemiology from around the globe, it is more than a dictionary: it includes explanations and comments on both core epidemiologic terms and on other scientific terms relevant to all professionals in clinical medicine and public health, as well as to professionals in the other health, life, and social sciences. Anyone seeking clarity on epidemiologic and methodological definitions important to human health will find it here. On the eve of a field trip to a foreign land, a health scientist remarked that if he had to limit his professional library to one volume on epidemiology, this would be the book he would choose.

It grew in the Middle East, on the banks of where the Tigris and Euphrates rivers meet, around the year 2500bce. This first society was alredy familiar with the concept of disease. It was defined as an "invasion and shutting in of a demon within sick persons body." The Sumerians tried to remove the demon by administering substances that would "confuse" it, and make it abandon the victims body. Thats why for many years it was thought that relief and curing had only a spititual or religious origin. Therefore, people depended on priests in organized societies (that had priestly orders) or on shamans ( in nomadic societies, or in thouse without priestly orders), the only ones capable of comunicating with the spirits in order to correct the problem. They were responsible for both their religious functions and for caring for health.

Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the activities on Health Telematics Education. In Europe, coordinated activities in healthcare informatics education started in the late 1980's with the establishment of European Courses in Health Teematics. At the same time the European Commission foresaw the need for spreading the knowledge of IT in the Healthcare Sector. Therefore the EC, since then, have supported the initiatives that aim to create awareness, stimulate diffusion, educate and train the users (healthcare professionals) in the application of Information Technology to the Healthcare Sector. Such an initiative is the NIGHTENGALE project which is an essential project in the planning and implementation of strategy timing the Nursing profession in using and applying healthcare information systems, as well as, the IT EDUCTRA project which covers a more wide spectrum of the Health Telematics Education. The objective of this book is to promote the appropriate use of the developed Telematics infrastructure across Europe by educating and training healthcare professionals in a harmonising way across Europe in the upcoming field of Health and Nursing Informatics. For achieving this objective the European Commission established a series of European Conferences on Health Telematics Education, and Workshops by experts (users, developers and policymakers). In this book the Proceedings of the first European Conference in 'Health Telematics Education' (HTE'96), organised by the NIGHTINGALE project and supported by the IT EDUCTRA project, are included as well as the minutes and the presentations of the NIGHTINGALE Workshops.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the world of the 21st century, epidemics are common biological and social occurrences, with HIV perhaps emphasising this better than any other disease. Medical scientific research has undoubtedly made significant steps forward; meanwhile, the social research field is still in its initial stages, with many awaiting an equally auspicious response. A Socio-Criminological Analysis of the HIV Epidemic offers a comprehensive analysis of the multifaceted socio-criminological dimensions of the HIV epidemic and positively contributes to the ongoing sociological debate on infectious diseases. The author intends to create an independent epistemology of HIV to explicate the social forces that impact and determine the course and experience of the epidemic, while also seeking to reframe the popular discourse on HIV to reflect sociological conceptualisations. This latter step leads to the identification of the concept of social interaction as an appropriate tool for highlighting the complex social nature of this virus. The unprecedented challenge posed by the epidemic for the international community calls for global cooperation aimed at evaluating the diverse aspects of the issues that many actors in this tragic drama must deal with. Given its wide-reaching international appeal, this book is also recommended for those involved or interested in global health issues and infectious diseases. It will be of particular interest to medical researchers, health workers, social scientists, social workers, policymakers, humanitarian workers, HIV and human rights activists, and graduate students.
