Book excerpt: Coherent modulation is more effective than differential modulation for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems requiring high data rate and spectral efficiency. Channel estimation is therefore an integral part of the receiver design. In this thesis, two iterative maximum likelihood based channel estimation algorithms are proposed for an OFDM system in dispersive time-varying channels. A multipath channel model is proposed for OFDM uplink transmission in macrocellular systems. The multipath fading channel is modeled such that the channel state can be determined by estimating the unknown channel parameters. A second-order Taylor series expansion is adopted to simplify the channel estimation problem. Based on the system model, an iterative maximum likelihood based algorithm is first proposed to estimate the discrete-time channel parameters. The mean square error performance of the proposed algorithm is analyzed using a small perturbation technique. Based on a convergence rate analysis, an improved iterative maximum likelihood based channel estimation algorithm is presented using a successive overrelaxation method. Numerical experiments are performed to confirm the theoretical analyses and show the improvement in convergence rate of the improved algorithm.

Book excerpt: This SpringerBrief investigates the performance of semi-blind independent component analysis (ICA) based equalization and carrier frequency offset estimation approaches (CFO) for a number of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based wireless communication systems. It provides a comprehensive overview of the challenges of channel equalization and frequency synchronization for different wireless systems. The authors present the wireless communication channel and system models. Key existing CFO estimation methods are reviewed, along with a number of the training based and non-training based (blind) channel estimation methods. This is followed by a study of ICA and its applications to OFDM-based wireless communication systems. Later chapters provide a detailed description of recent research on semi-blind CFO estimation and ICA based equalization approaches for various wireless communication systems including multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) OFDM and coordinated multipoint (CoMP) systems. Semi-blind CFO estimation and equalization structures provide a spectrum-efficient and high-performance solution for high speed wireless communications. This book is suitable for postgraduate students, researchers or professionals in the area of wireless communications.

Book excerpt: Designing spectral efficient, high-speed wireless links that offer high quality- of-service and range capability has been a critical research and engineering challenge. In this thesis, we mainly address the complexity and performance issues of channel estimation and data detection in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems over time-varying channels. We derive the probability density function (pdf) expressions of the condition number (i.e., the maximum-to-minimum-singular-value ratio, MMSVR) of the channel state information matrix of MIMO OFDM systems. It is shown that this ratio is directly related to the noise enhancement in open-loop systems and provides a significant insight on the system capacity. A decision-directed (DD) maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) channel estimation scheme of MIMO systems is derived. Error performance of a zero- forcing receiver with the DD MAP and perfect channel estimates is provided and compared. This scheme has a low complexity and can be applied to time-varying Rayleigh fading channels with an arbitrary spaced-time correlation function. We propose an iterative channel estimation and data detection scheme for MIMO OFDM systems in the presence of inter-carrier-interference (ICI) due to the nature of time-varying channels. An ICI-based minimum-mean-square error (MMSE) detection scheme is derived. An expectation-maximization (EM) based least square (LS) channel estimator is proposed to minimize the mean-square error (MSE) of the channel estimates and to reduce the complexity of the implementation. With the estimate of the channel and initially detected symbols, ICI is estimated and removed from the received signal. Thus more accurate estimation of the channel and data detection can be obtained in the next iteration. An EM-based MAP channel estimator is derived by exploiting the frequency/time correlation of the pilot and data sub-carriers. Performance comparison is made between the proposed schemes and the ideal case - time-invariant channels and perfect channel estimation. We optimize the data transmission by exploiting the long term correlation characteristics. The transmitted data is successively detected without an error floor in spatially correlated channels. The algorithms proposed in this thesis allow low-complexity implementation of channel estimation and data detection for MIMO OFDM systems over time-varying fading channels, while providing good error performance.

Book excerpt: Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a promising technology for next generation communication systems, where the base station (BS) is equipped with a large number of antenna elements to serve multiple user equipments. With the large number of antenna elements, the BS can perform multi-user beamforming with much narrower beamwidth, thereby simultaneously serving more users with less interference among them. Furthermore, the large antenna array results in large array gain which lowers the radiated energy. However, efficient beamforming relies on the availability of channel state information at the BS. In a frequency-division duplexing massive MIMO system, the channel estimation is challenging due to the need to estimate a high dimensional unknown channel vector, which requires large training and feedback overhead for the conventional channel estimation algorithms. Moreover, massive MIMO system with fully digital architecture, where a dedicated radio frequency chain and a high-resolution analog-to-digital converter (ADC) are connected to each antenna element, will cause too much power and hardware cost as the size of the antenna array becomes large. To reduce the training and feedback overhead, compressive sensing methods and sparse recovery algorithms are proposed to robustly estimate the downlink and uplink channel by exploiting the sparse representation of the massive MIMO channel. Previous works model this sparse representation by some predefined matrix, while in this dissertation, a dictionary learning based channel model is proposed which learns an efficient and robust representation from the data. Furthermore, a joint uplink/downlink dictionary learning framework is proposed by observing the reciprocity between the angle of arrival in uplink and the angel of departure in downlink, which enables a joint channel estimation algorithm. To save the power and hardware cost, a hardware-efficient architecture which contains both hybrid analog-digital processing and low-resolution ADCs is proposed. This hardware-efficient architecture poses significant challenges to channel estimation due to the reduced dimension and precision of the measured signal. To address the problem, the sparse nature of the channel is exploited and the transmitted data symbols are utilized as the "virtual pilots", both of which are treated in a unified Bayesian formulation. We formulate the channel estimation into a quantized compressive sensing problem utilizing the sparse Bayesian learning framework, and develop a variational Bayesian algorithm for inference. The performance of the compressive sensing can be further improved by applying a well structured sensing matrix, and we propose a sensing matrix design algorithm which can exploit the partial knowledge of the support.

Book excerpt: Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is well-known for its efficient high speed transmission and robustness to frequency-selective fading channels. On the other hand, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems have the ability to increase capacity and reliability of a wireless communication system compared to single-input single-output (SISO) systems. Hence, the integration of the two technologies has the potential to meet the ever growing demands of future communication systems. In these systems, channel estimation is very crucial to demodulate the data coherently. For a good channel estimation, spectral efficiency and lower computational complexity are two important points to be considered. In this thesis, we explore different channel estimation techniques in order to improve estimation performance by increasing the bandwidth efficiency and reducing the computational complexity for both SISO-OFDM and MIMO-OFDM systems. We first investigate pilot and Expectation-Maximization (EM)-based channel estimation techniques and compare their performances. Next, we explore different pilot arrangements by reducing the number of pilot symbols in one OFDM frame to improve bandwidth efficiency. We obtain the bit error rate and the channel estimation performance for these pilot arrangements. Then, in order to decrase the computational complexity, we propose an iterative channel estimation technique, which establishes a link between the decision block and channel estimation block using virtual subcarriers. We compare this proposed technique with EM-based channel estimation in terms of performance and complexity. These channel estimation techniques are also applied to STBC-OFDM and V-BLAST structured MIMO-OFDM systems. Finally, we investigate a joint EM-based channel estimation and signal detection technique for V-BLAST OFDM system.

Book excerpt: In this book the channel estimation techniques for OFDM systems based on Block Type Pilot arrangement are investigated. Finally, the DFT based channel estimation technique is performed which gives better performance over LS and MMSE based channel estimation. With same SNR, the BER of DFT based channel estimation is less than the BER of LS and MMSE based channel estimation. The MMSE estimator has good performance but high complexity. The LS estimator has low complexity, but its performance is not as good as that MMSE estimator basically at low SNR. Block Type Pilot arrangement is suitable for frequency-selective channels. For the fast-fading channels, however, it might incur too much overhead to track the channel variation by reducing the pilot symbol period. As the use of pilot symbols for channel estimation decrease the spectrum efficiency of the wireless communication systems, it will be beneficial if we can adaptively change the number of pilot tones depending on the channel condition through some feedback information.

Book excerpt: The data rate and spectrum efficiency of wireless mobile communications have been significantly improved over the last decade or so. Recently, the advanced systems such as 3GPP LTE and terrestrial digital TV broadcasting have been sophisticatedly developed using OFDM and CDMA technology. In general, most mobile communication systems transmit bits of information in the radio space to the receiver. The radio channels in mobile radio systems are usually multipath fading channels, which cause inter-symbol interference (ISI) in the received signal. To remove ISI from the signal, there is a need of strong equalizer which requires knowledge on the channel impulse response (CIR). This is primarily provided by a separate channel estimator. Usually the channel estimation is based on the known sequence of bits, which is unique for a certain transmitter and which is repeated in every transmission burst. Thus, the channel estimator is able to estimate CIR for each burst separately by exploiting the known transmitted bits and the corresponding received samples. In this thesis we investigate and compare various efficient channel estimation schemes for OFDM systems which can also be extended to MC DS-CDMA systems. The channel estimation can be performed by either inserting pilot tones into all subcarriers of OFDM symbols with a specific period or inserting pilot tones into each OFDM symbol. Two major types of pilot arrangement such as block type and comb type pilot have been focused employing Least Square Error (LSE) and Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) channel estimators. Block type pilot sub-carriers is especially suitable for slow-fading radio channels whereas comb type pilots provide better resistance to fast fading channels. Also comb type pilot arrangement is sensitive to frequency selectivity when comparing to block type arrangement. However, there is another supervised technique called Implicit Training (IT) based channel estimation which exploits the first order statistics i.

Book excerpt: Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a multi-carrier transmission technology in wireless environment, and can also be seen as a multi-carrier digital modulation or multi-carrier digital multiplexing technology. A large number of orthogonal sub-carriers are used to transmit information. OFDM system has high utilization of frequency spectrum and satisfactory capability of reducing multi-path inference. So, OFDM has been considered as one of the core technologies of 4th generation (4G) wireless communication system in the future. Channel estimation plays a very important role in OFDM system. As a research hotpot, many related algorithms have been presented these years, which can be generally separated into two methods, pilot-based channel estimation and blind channel estimation. Pilot-based channel estimation estimates the channel information by obtaining the impulse response from all sub-carriers by pilot. Compared with blind channel estimation, which uses statistical information of the received signals, pilot-based channel estimation is a practical and an effective method. This thesis is on the pilot-based channel estimation of OFDM system. Firstly, it introduces the basic principle and realization of OFDM system, and describes the system construction and model with summary of some key technologies, such as fast Fourier transform (FFT) and cyclic prefix (CP). We also analyze OFDM modulation in the frequency domain, and discusses some advantages and disadvantages of OFDM system. Next, a summary of multi-path and time varying statistical properties of general wireless channel of OFDM system are presented. This thesis also investigates principles and performances of the channel estimation methods, block type pilot and comb type pilot. In the arrangement of block type pilot, the performance of channel estimation is analyzed with estimators based on three different algorithms, least square (LS) algorithm, linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) algorithm and singular value decomposition (SVD) algorithm. To use comb-type pilot arrangement, the thesis introduces three methods of interpolation: linear interpolation, second order interpolation and cubic spline interpolation. Finally, simulation results using Matlab are used to compare bit error rate (BER) performance of different modulation schemes and types of pilot.
