Book excerpt: Previous research has demonstrated that instruction in phoneme awareness, computer-assisted instruction and cross-age peer tutoring can all effective methods for teaching phoneme awareness to struggling readers. This study investigated the efficacy of computer-assisted instruction in phonological awareness and cross-age peer tutoring (CAIPT) in improving phonological awareness of primary grade students at-risk for reading disabilities. Eighty-seven children ranging in age fiom 65 to 1 19 months (M = 89.45; SD = 11.7) were assigned using a stratified random procedure to one of two conditions: (1) cross-age peer tutoring in combination with computer-assisted phonological awareness instruction (CAIPT); and (2) phonological awareness instruction (PAI). Tutees and tutors in the CAIPT groups were age matched to pairs of children in the PA1 control groups. Children in the two CAIPT groups were poor readers (i.e., standard scores ≤ 80 on the Letter-Word Identification subtest on the Woodcock Johnson Achievement Battery - Third Edition). The treatment groups received 20 minutes of CAIPT instruction five times a week for 3 weeks. The control groups participated in 20 minutes of phonological awareness and literacy activities taught daily for 3 weeks. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted in order to compare the performance of the CAIPT treatment and PA1 control groups on phonological processing. Profile analyses demonstrated that the phonological processing performance for the CAIPT treatment and PA1 control groups had identical parallel and flat profiles. Qualitative analyses of the data revealed that CAIPT fosters collaboration and communication between learners by providing an interactive and entertaining environment for learners.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the amount of time spent on computer-assisted instruction in the kindergarten classroom and students' phonemic awareness development. This twenty-eight week study was notable in that it examined the effect of the amount of time student's received computer-assisted instruction in phonemic awareness. The experimental group received thirty minutes of computer-assisted instruction per day while the control group received fifteen minutes of computer-assisted instruction per day. The control and experimental groups were given the PALS-K phonological awareness assessment at the beginning and end of the study. Data analysis indicated no significant differences between the two groups.

Book excerpt: Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.

Book excerpt: Programs to support early literacy development are implemented regularly in the schools without research on their efficacy. This study examined the efficacy of a commonly used program for struggling readers. Twelve kindergarten children who were at-risk for reading difficulties took part in a 10 week intervention program called Talking Tables. Twelve kindergarten children, also at-risk for reading difficulties were the control group, and received no intervention. The children in the intervention group made significant gains in phonological awareness. The results suggest that the Talking Tables is effective as an early intervention in developing phonological awareness skills in kindergarten children that are at-risk for reading difficulties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is about the efficacy of computer-assisted reading programs in a Pennsylvania middle school. This study aims to determine if there is a correlation between using computer-assisted reading programs and students’ reading assessment scores. The study also analyzes the relationship between students’ reading assessment scores and their grade level, gender, and ethnicity. This study pursued to answer the following questions: What is the effect of computer-assisted instruction on students’ reading assessment scores? What is the relationship between students’ reading assessment scores and their grade level, gender, and ethnicity? In the 21st century, schools all around the country engage computer-assisted reading programs. However, schools lack evidence of its effectiveness in student learning. This problem not only affects teachers’ planning but also affects student learning. The intent and spirit of the study will be to provide research evidence highlighting the efficacy of computer-assisted reading programs. The study results answered the two research questions and concluded that computer-assisted reading programs do not have much influence on student learning. Researchers can use this information and evidence for further investigation based on the study’s findings, such as using a larger population, different subject areas, and various computer-assisted learning programs. Computer-assisted learning is still in its infancy, and educators need more evidence to support their decisions to assist students in accessing their education.
