Book excerpt: Previous studies have compared achievement in online courses and traditional face-to-face courses and generally concluded that there were no significant differences based on end of term performance. However, other studies suggest that students tend to fail or drop out of virtual courses at a higher rate than they do in face-to-face classes. The problem addressed in this study was to further examine the academic impact of online classes within the alternative high school (AHS) student population. This quasi-experimental study examined between-group differences in the academic success rates of 108 AHS students over time and across different modes of delivery within one year for three courses. The 2-year longitudinal analysis assessed the impact of enrollment policy on course grade point (GP) outcomes, whereas the cross sectional component examined GP outcomes across Virtual Model and FLEX Model instructional deliveries. Independent- sample t tests of the longitudinal data indicated a significant increase in GP for one of the three courses after the enrollment policy change; however, another series of independent-sample t tests indicated there were no statistically significant differences across the two models of instructional delivery for any of the three classes. One recommendation of this study would be the development of comprehensive models of instruction, ones that use evaluative studies to better inform the combined influences of enrollment policies and instructional delivery options on student success. The social impact of the study is its contribution to a better understanding of characteristics of successful online programs and ultimately an increase in the achievement of AHS students taking online courses.

Book excerpt: The recent and rapid growth of technology during the last several years has dramatically increased the number of new online degree programs and courses in the United States. As a result, enrollment into these online programs and courses has also increased. The United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) estimated there was a total of 12.2 million enrollments in college-level credit-granting distance education courses in 2006-07. A study by the Department of Education (2011) found that from 2000 to 2008, the percentage of undergraduates enrolled in at least one distance education class expanded from 8% to 20%. A Survey of Online Learning by the Babson Survey Research Group (2011) revealed that the number of students taking at least one online course has now surpassed 6 million. Now nearly one-third of all students in higher education are taking at least one online course. With the recent increase in online education programs, many learning institutions are focused on student retention and graduation rates. This study sought to gather evidence from online distance education students that would lead to general conclusions about relationships between online attendance, participation, and student achievement variables using a quantitative research design. A simple random sample was drawn from the accessible population of students taking undergraduate online distance education courses at Wilmington University during the fall semester of 2012. The sampling frame included students registered in courses offered from every academic department at the university. The sample used in this study was 548 undergraduate online students from 34 online courses. This study identified a small effect size between volume of participation (R2 = .088) and student achievement in online learning. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.
