Lack of variable responding has been demonstrated to result in several negative effects, such as the resurgence of challenging behaviors due to relapse. Research has provided practitioners with multiple options for increasing response variability. One method that has been utilized to increase variable responding across different domains is the lag schedule of reinforcement. The current study replicated and extended previous research by evaluating the effect of a Lag 3 schedule on the intraverbal repertoire of a 5-year-old child with ASD using a telehealth format. Results demonstrated the child emitted different and varied intraverbal responses following the implementation of both a Lag 1 and Lag 3 schedule of reinforcement.

Previous research shows that implementation of a lag schedule of reinforcement will increase response variability to intraverbal stimuli in individuals with autism (Contreras & Betz, in press; Heldt & Schlinger, 2012; Lee, McComas, & Jawor, 2002; Susa and Schlinger, 2012). However, current research is missing two important pieces of information: 1) How much variability is enough; 2) How much variability can an individual emit. The current study used a pre-assessment in which each child was asked to name all animals known to them and then implemented a Lag 1 for those participants who failed to vary during baseline. Results found that a Lag 1 alone was effective at increasing varied responding to those emitted by the age-matched peer for one participant and a Lag 1 schedule with training was effective in increasing responding for two participants.

Book excerpt: Reinforcing multiple mand topographies or modalities during functional communication training (FCT) may increase the persistence of manding during challenges to treatment. However, validated procedures that reinforce the use of multiple mand topographies during FCT are lacking. Prior research demonstrated that FCT with a lag schedule of reinforcement reduced challenging behavior and increased non-vocal mand variability across modalities in individuals with autism. This finding suggests similar procedures may have similar effects on challenging behavior and vocal and/or sign manding. Also, studies have shown that lag schedules following response prompting and/or prompt fading can increase variability in vocalizations, tacts, and intraverbals. Therefore, the current study evaluated the effects of response prompting procedures and a lag schedule of reinforcement on topographical mand variability and challenging behavior during FCT. The results suggest that lag schedules can reinforce topographical mand variability during FCT following the fading or elimination of response prompts. This finding warrants study of the effects of these procedures on the resurgence of manding and challenging behavior following treatment with FCT in children with autism. Limitations of the current study and directions for future research are discussed.

A multiple baseline across participants design was used to examine the effects of an across session lag schedule on the choice of leisure activities of three elementary students diagnosed with autism. During baseline, two participants showed low levels of variability when choosing a leisure activity and one participant displayed a pattern of within session switching. Variable responding increased for all participants when the lag schedule of reinforcement was utilized and continued during fading. During follow-up, one participant continued to respond to the visual stimulus on a Lag 2 schedule without receiving a reinforcer and one participant returned to repetitive responding. This study supports research findings that lag schedules of reinforcement are effective in increasing variability in students with autism. Additionally, it addresses the limitation of frequent switching by utilizing an across session lag schedule.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Intraverbals are a particularly important aspect of verbal behavior, which allow people to answer questions, maintain conversations, and complete many academic tasks. This study sought to teach three adolescent students with Autism Spectrum Disorder to respond to questions about activities they had completed. A multiple baseline design was used with a time delay procedure, in which the length of time between an activity and a question about that activity was gradually increased. All participants demonstrated proficiency in tacting the objects that would be used in training activities. Participants did not correctly answer any questions during baseline in which the time delay between activity and question was 30 min. During treatment participants engaged in a 5 min activity with the researcher and then all materials were placed out of sight and the researcher immediately asked the student about the activity that he or she just completed. The time between the activity and question was then gradually increased until the terminal delay of 30 min was reached. One participant did not need any prompts to respond correctly at the 0 s criterion and advanced through the time delays until he was responding correctly at the terminal delay of 30 min. The other two participants required training at the 0-s criterion, and then advanced through the time delays without additional prompting. Multiple examples of activities and responses were also incorporated to promote generalization. Participants were able to generalize across longer time delays, novel activities, and different conversation partners.

From this basis, a framework is provided for establishing relational networks in individuals who lack derived relational ability. Establishment of relational frames may increase the probability of responding relationally to novel instances and use of the specific relational frames during social interactions; therefore, training verbal relations in accordance with an RFT approach may enhance intraverbal responding and facilitate the emergence of untrained responses. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the emergence of specific relationships in the context of intraverbal responding as a collateral effect of training on relational networks in four children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Two participants demonstrated mastery of derived relational responding (DRR) without training, one participant demonstrated mastery of DRR following training, and a fourth participant demonstrated mutual entailment and some combinatorial entailment. Increases in vocal verbal behavior during generalization probes were observed, although increased use of all target relations was not observed in all participants. Further research is needed to evaluate specific deficits in derived relational responding among individuals with ASD, as well as the correlation between DRR and language ability.

Results of basic studies indicate that the inclusion of a delay to reinforcement leads to an increase in the variety of responses. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effects of a delay to reinforcement on the variability of communication responses during functional communication training with children with developmental disabilities with histories of engagement in challenging behavior. Results indicated that the delay to reinforcement increased variant communicative responding with all four participants.
