Book Synopsis Zebra Mussels Biology, Impacts, and Control by : Thomas F. Nalepa
Download or read book Zebra Mussels Biology, Impacts, and Control written by Thomas F. Nalepa and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992-11-24 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction and rapid spread of the zebra mussel in North American waters has caused great concern among industrial and recreational users of these waters. This bivalve mollusk is a biofouler that attaches to any firm substrate (e.g. rocks, piers, water intake pipes, boat hulls) and has already created significant problems for raw water users such as water treatment plants and power plants. Zebra Mussels: Biology, Impacts and Control provides essential information regarding the biology of the zebra mussel in North America and Europe, presents case studies of environmental and industrial impacts, and outlines control strategies. Summary articles detail its life history, origins, and morphology. The book also examines techniques used to culture and maintain this organism in the laboratory. Thirty-two color plates illustrate some of the dramatic problems created by the explosive population growth of this species. Zebra Mussels: Biology, Impacts, and Control is an important resource for ecologists, conservationists, environmental consultants, water quality engineers, regulatory officials, power utilities, and libraries.

Book excerpt: Marine fisheries management refers to the practice of using fisheries science in order to protect the marine ecosystem, especially fishes. It aims to device methods to sustainably harvest fishes along with minimizing exploitation of the natural resources involved in the process. This book is compiled in such a manner, that it will provide in-depth knowledge about the theory and practice of marine fisheries management. It presents this complex subject in the most comprehensive and easy to understand language. Students, researchers, marine biologists, aquaculturists, and all other associated with this area will find this text helpful. It will prove to be a beneficial source of reference for readers.
Book Synopsis Introductory Fisheries Analyses with R by : Derek H. Ogle
Download or read book Introductory Fisheries Analyses with R written by Derek H. Ogle and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-01-05 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A How-To Guide for Conducting Common Fisheries-Related Analyses in R Introductory Fisheries Analyses with R provides detailed instructions on performing basic fisheries stock assessment analyses in the R environment. Accessible to practicing fisheries scientists as well as advanced undergraduate and graduate students, the book demonstrates the flexibility and power of R, offers insight into the reproducibility of script-based analyses, and shows how the use of R leads to more efficient and productive work in fisheries science. The first three chapters present a minimal introduction to the R environment that builds a foundation for the fisheries-specific analyses in the remainder of the book. These chapters help you become familiar with R for basic fisheries analyses and graphics. Subsequent chapters focus on methods to analyze age comparisons, age-length keys, size structure, weight-length relationships, condition, abundance (from capture-recapture and depletion data), mortality rates, individual growth, and the stock-recruit relationship. The fundamental statistical methods of linear regression, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and nonlinear regression are demonstrated within the contexts of these common fisheries analyses. For each analysis, the author completely explains the R functions and provides sufficient background information so that you can confidently implement each method. Web Resource The author’s website at http://derekogle.com/IFAR/ includes the data files and R code for each chapter, enabling you to reproduce the results in the book as well as create your own scripts. The site also offers supplemental code for more advanced analyses and practice exercises for every chapter.

Book Synopsis Quantitative Fisheries Stock Assessment by : R. Hilborn
Download or read book Quantitative Fisheries Stock Assessment written by R. Hilborn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book really began in 1980 with our first microcomputer, an Apple II +. The great value of the Apple II + was that we could take the computer programs we had been building on mainframe and mini-computers, and make them available to the many fisheries biologists who also had Apple II + 's. About 6 months after we got our first Apple, John Glaister came through Vancouver and saw what we were doing and realized that his agency (New South Wales State Fisheries) had the same equipment and could run the same programs. John organized a training course in Australia where we showed about 25 Australian fisheries biologists how to use microcomputers to do many standard fisheries analyses. In the process of organizing this and sub sequent courses we developed a series of lecture notes. Over the last 10 years these notes have evolved into the chapters of this book.
