Book Synopsis The Alewives' Tale by : Barbara Brennessel
Download or read book The Alewives' Tale written by Barbara Brennessel and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While on vacation in 1980, biologist Barbara Brennessel and her family came across an amazing sight: hundreds of small silver fish migrating from the Atlantic Ocean, across a channel connecting two ponds in the town of Wellfleet on Cape Cod. She later learned that these tiny river herring were important for the ecology and economy of the region and that volunteers were counting fewer and fewer fish migrating each year. The Alewives' Tale describes the plight of alewives and blueback herring, two fish species that have similar life histories and are difficult to distinguish by sight. Collectively referred to as river herring, they have been economically important since colonial times as food, fertilizer, and bait. In recent years they have attracted much attention from environmentalists, especially as attempts are being made, on and beyond Cape Cod, to restore the rivers, streams, ponds, lakes, and estuaries that are crucial for their reproduction and survival. Brennessel provides an overview of the biology of the fish--from fertilized eggs to large schools of adults that migrate in the Atlantic Ocean--while describing the habitats at different stages of their life history. She explores the causes of the dramatic decline of river herring since the mid-twentieth century and the various efforts to restore these iconic fish to the historic populations that treated many onlookers to spectacular inland migrations each spring.

Book Synopsis Fly Fishing for Trophy Striped Bass by : John L. Field
Download or read book Fly Fishing for Trophy Striped Bass written by John L. Field and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-06-18 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Striped bass, or simply “stripers,” are a premier saltwater sportfish that can grow to over 50 pounds and swim in giant schools that will churn the surface of the water to a froth as they feed on baitfish, creating heart-pumping, fast-paced fly fishing. Originally native to coastal Atlantic States and eastern Canada, they have also been introduced to the Pacific as well as many inland reservoirs and the rivers that flow into them, making stripers arguably the most accessible and popular saltwater species in North America. In this comprehensive guide, author John L. Field describes their behavior, foods they eat, the best flies and methods to imitate those foods, and where today’s angler stands the best chance of catching a trophy fish. Top guides, creative fly tiers, and marine biologists contribute their experience and expertise to this book.
Book Synopsis Fly Fishing Boston: A Complete Saltwater Guide from Rhode Island to Maine by : Terry Tessein
Download or read book Fly Fishing Boston: A Complete Saltwater Guide from Rhode Island to Maine written by Terry Tessein and published by The Countryman Press. This book was released on 2003-02-01 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where and how to fly fish within two or three hours of downtown Boston. Terry Tessein, a veteran of a lifetime of fishing the New England coastline, shares those years of experience in the first detailed guidebook to the multitude of fly fishing possibilities within easy reach of downtown Boston. From the shores of Rhode Island to the coastline of southern Maine, Tessein will guide the reader on where to go, when to go to find particular species, and what flies and tactics to use at each venue. Fly Fishing Boston covers both well known areas like the Joppa Flats of Newburyport, as well as the relatively unknown and underfished areas along this stretch. In addition, Tessein explains such important coastal fishing information as tides and how they affect the movement of fish. Finally, Fly Fishing Boston is detailed enough to provide even regional fly patterns unique to specific zones. It will be a book to both read in the off-season and to pack in the tackle bag when heading out for a day of fishing.
