Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller What is Jesus worth to you? It's easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, he said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily... But who do you know who lives like that? Do you? In Radical, David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple--then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. And he tells the dramatic story of what is happening as a "successful" suburban church decides to get serious about the gospel according to Jesus. Finally, he urges you to join in The Radical Experiment -- a one-year journey in authentic discipleship that will transform how you live in a world that desperately needs the Good News Jesus came to bring.

Book excerpt: OVERVIEWThe purpose of this work is threefold. First, it is designed to give the student a thorough overview of the entire New Testament. Second, this book also provides an in-depth study of each one of the 27 books that make up the New Testament canon. And finally, the work sets forth the historical context of the life and times of Jesus and the Early Church. Since God has not spoken in a vacuum, the more we know about the world of the New Testament, the better we will understand God's word. So New Testament Survey will include information about the people and practices found in the Bible. By working through this book, the student will learn a lot about the political, social and religious factors of the first-century world.FORMATNew Testament Survey consists of 29 individual lessons. It is subdivided into an "Overview," "Objectives," "Helps for Learning and Remembering," and "Key Words." The "Overview" gives the student a "heads up" on what to expect in the lesson. In this way, the student is oriented to the content of the lesson. The "Objectives" set forth what the lesson hopes to accomplish. It describes what the student should be able to do once they have finished studying this section. "Helps for Learning and Remembering" give the student practical study tips for mastering the content of the lesson. "Key Words" list the special vocabulary found throughout the lesson. The student should be on the look-out for these words as they work along in the lesson. They should make out a vocabulary card for each term and include a brief description or definition on the back. This will help the student master the special jargon contained in the lesson.Brief dialogue boxes are found throughout the lesson. These contain simple questions and terms that relate to the content of what is being studied. By answering the questions and identifying the terms, the student will begin to incorporate the content of the lesson. Finally, every lesson includes a "Self Test" at the end. This short test is designed to address the main points contained in the lesson. Answers to the "Self Test" are included at the end of the book. Once the test has been taken, the student should check to see how many he/she has gotten correct. This also is a powerful learning tool for mastering the content of the New Testament.APPLICATIONThe main goal of New Testament Survey is to provide a deeper understanding of God's Word. Yet the purpose of this book does not stop there. The student should seek ways to apply what has been learned to life and ministry. Service to God, His church and one's neighbor is always to be kept in view when studying New Testament Survey. So enjoy your study of New Testament Survey and be prepared to be empowered for more effective service in His Kingdom!
