Book excerpt: In an effort to optimize the thermodynamic efficiency and emissions levels of a current production common rail DI diesel engine, an experimental campaign was undertaken accompanied closely by analytical work. The objective of the analytical CFD work was to study the processes of fuel spray/wall interaction, flame propagation and interaction with the piston surface and the most relevant mechanisms of soot formation and oxidation in order to guide the experimental work. Given the project's objectives, the only parameters which could be modified regarded the piston-bowl geometry leaving the rest of the combustion system architecture intact. The paper describes only two extreme cases which, in the authors' opinion, demonstrate the interaction processes between combustion and combustion chamber walls. The analysis is limited in two engine operating conditions: one concerns maximum power operation and quantifies the effect of combustion chamber geometry on efficiency while the second is representative of the emissions test cycle. The numerical results indicate that, regarding performance, a larger diameter combustion chamber leads to higher combustion efficiency due to a weaker interaction of the fuel vapor and flame with the bowl walls. For the other operating condition, the soot model developed by Borghi and implemented in the SPEED code has been used. The numerical results showed that the larger diameter combustion bowl exhibits a lower efficiency in terms of soot oxidation due to the lower swirl velocities pertaining in the bowl during expansion. These trends have been confirmed by the experimental work. Based on the indications of the above analysis, an alternative combustion chamber has been designed and examined analytically. The main feature of this last design is a slightly smaller bowl diameter which leads to higher swirl levels during expansion accompanied by more soot oxidation and slightly lower combustion efficiency.

The prior work on DISC engines that is relevant to current GDI engine development is also reviewed and discussed. The fuel economy and emission data for actual engine configurations have been obtained and assembled for all of the available GDI literature, and are reviewed and discussed in detail. The types of GDI engines are arranged in four classifications of decreasing complexity, and the advantages and disadvantages of each class are noted and explained. Emphasis is placed upon consensus trends and conclusions that are evident when taken as a whole; thus the GDI researcher is informed regarding the degree to which engine volumetric efficiency and compression ratio can be increased under optimized conditions, and as to the extent to which unburned hydrocarbon (UBHC), NOx and particulate emissions can be minimized for specific combustion strategies. The critical area of GDI fuel injector deposits and the associated effect on spray geometry and engine performance degradation are reviewed, and important system guidelines for minimizing deposition rates and deposit effects are presented. The capabilities and limitations of emission control techniques and after treatment hardware are reviewed in depth, and a compilation and discussion of areas of consensus on attaining European, Japanese and North American emission standards presented. All known research, prototype and production GDI engines worldwide are reviewed as to performance, emissions and fuel economy advantages, and for areas requiring further development. The engine schematics, control diagrams and specifications are compiled, and the emission control strategies are illustrated and discussed. The influence of lean-NOx catalysts on the development of late-injection, stratified-charge GDI engines is reviewed, and the relative merits of lean-burn, homogeneous, direct-injection engines as an option requiring less control complexity are analyzed.

These important drivers caused innovations in diesel engineering like re-entrant combustion chambers in the piston, lower swirl support and high pressure injection, in turn reducing the ignition delay and hence the nitric oxides. The limits on emissions are being continually reduced. The- fore, the required accuracy of the models to predict the emissions and efficiency of the engines is high. The phenomenological combustion models based on physical and chemical description of the processes in the engine are practical to describe diesel engine combustion and to carry out parametric studies. This is because the injection process, which can be relatively well predicted, has the dominant effect on mixture formation and subsequent course of combustion. The need for improving these models by incorporating new developments in engine designs is explained in Chapter 2. With “model based control programs” used in the Electronic Control Units of the engines, phenomenological models are assuming more importance now because the detailed CFD based models are too slow to be handled by the Electronic Control Units. Experimental work is necessary to develop the basic understanding of the pr- esses.

Book excerpt: The main driving force behind this research was the need for cleaner and more efficient engines to meet the ever-increasing demands on the modern automobile's emissions. In recent years different studies have been carried out to analyze the combined effects of high-pressure injection, boost pressure, multiple injections, included spray angle and combustion chamber geometry. Though considerable research has shown these technologies can meet the low emission regulations, the careful optimization of the engine operating conditions is still required in order to get the full benefit of the different strategies. With these issues as motivation, the first important objective of this study was to gain a detailed understanding of the mechanisms through which fuel injection interacts with other engine parameters and influences diesel combustion and emissions, and hence to attempt to generalize the adoption of multiple injection strategies with regards to improving diesel engine performance. For this purpose, a modified parameter called "Homogeneity Factor of in-cylinder charge" (HF) was introduced and proposed as a new measure in combustion theory to analyze the combustion characteristics and air-fuel mixing process of diesel engines in more detail. The second part of this research builds upon a detail investigation on the included spray cone angle concept and explores further their use in conjunction with multiple-injection strategies in diesel engines. In addition, an investigation was performed in third phase of this research to analyze the effects of piston geometry on combustion, performance and exhaust emission characteristics. The results showed that employing a post-injection combined with a pilot injection results in reduced soot formation from diffusion combustion and enhances the soot oxidation process during the expansion stroke, resulting in decreased soot emissions, while the NOx concentration is maintained in low levels. It was also found that spray targeting is very effective for controlling the in-cylinder mixture distributions especially when it accompanied with advanced injection strategies. Moreover, the results confirmed that a narrower width of piston bowl has a higher unburned fuel air mixture region and hence results in higher soot emissions but with slightly larger piston surface area the optimum operating point could be obtained.

The utilization of biofuels in such controlled combustion processes has the great advantage of not depleting the limited resources of fossil fuels while leading to emissions of greenhouse gases and smoke particles similar to those of fossil fuels. On the other hand, a vast amount of biofuels are subjected to combustion in small-scale processes, such as for heating and cooking in residential dwellings, as well as in agricultural operations, such as crop residue removal and land clearing. In addition, large amounts of biomass are consumed annually during forest and savanna fires in many parts of the world. These types of burning processes are typically uncontrolled and unregulated. Consequently, the emissions from these processes may be larger compared to industrial-type operations. Aside from direct effects on human health, especially due to a sizeable fraction of the smoke emissions remaining inside residential homes, the smoke particles and gases released from uncontrolled biofuel combustion impose significant effects on the regional and global climate. Estimates have shown the majority of carbonaceous airborne particulate matter to be derived from the combustion of biofuels and biomass. “Production of Biofuels and Numerical Modelling of Chemical Combustion Systems” comprehensively overviews and includes in-depth technical research papers addressing recent progress in biofuel production and combustion processes.
