Between groups experimental design was used where three treatment groups were given a variety of multimedia enriched instructional materials; 54 students were exposed to audio visual materials, 53 used printed multicolour, and 54 printed plain as a control group. Pre and post tests were used to assess students' knowledge of the given set of materials before and after the experimental treatments. Post test result scores and multimedia enrichment were used as dependent and independent variables respectively. The audio visual group was found to perform significantly superior (56.76%) than the printed plain (p= 0.001); audio aided group performance was significantly higher (52.31%) than the printed plain (p=0.05); printed multicolour group performed higher (49.57%) than the printed plain group (45.54%). The study recommends the use of multimedia technology in the preparation and use of ODL instructional materials. The study further recommends studies on teachers' competence in developing, embedding and using multimedia enriched instructional materials.

Several years ago, the Dutch authorities decided to found an Open University, a system of distance learning especially suited to students only able or willing to devote part of their time to their studies, and, moreover, not generally capable of studying at fixed times or places. A preparatory committee was created, which published a preliminary report in 1 1978. This report was largely concerned with the kinds of courses the Open University should offer and the kinds of students it planned to enroll. The report also discussed possible teaching methods or media of the Open University. The predominant conclusion was that written instruction should constitute the basic teaching medium, and that other media (e. g. , computerized instruction or televi sion) were only to be added if the written medium failed to realize the desired teaching objectives. This preference was mainly based on considerations of cost, since the committee expected written instruction to be the cheapest alternative possible. Whether this is in fact true will be discussed later in this book. We were then asked to reconsider the different possibilities of teaching methods and media in more detail, in terms of their differential teaching effects, costs of application, and the committee's preference for the print medium. Work was started on this assignment in 1978 and completed a year later.

Students with different learning performances were given instruction in different levels of multimedia enrichment, including: audio visual, audio aided, printed multicolour and printed plain instructional materials. Multiple choices and matching item questions were used to assess their performance in pre and post treatment situations. The results were compared with student’s academic performance in national examination. Correlation analysis was used to assess the strength and direction of the linear relationship between performance in different multimedia enrichment levels and student’s potentials. It was revealed that there was a strong and positive correlation between performance in audio visual and audio aided and student’s academic potentials but there was no significant correlation between performance in both printed modes and academic performances. Also, boys scored higher than girls in three instructional modes namely: audio aided printed multicolour, and printed plain, while girls scored higher only in the audio visual mode. The study recommends that instructional materials should be prepared in multimedia mode so as to benefit both normal and disabled students. The Ministry of Education and Vocational Training should amend school curriculum so as to accommodate multimedia technology as well as training of teachers on multimedia technology.

It was the culmination of work that began in 1978. In this third edition, IBSTPI presents its latest view of the competencies of instructional designers. It is a greatly expanded view that reflects the complexities of current practice and technology, theoretical advancements, and the social tenor of the times. The level of proficiency described in the 1986 Competencies was taken to represent an instructional designer who would probably have at least three years of experience in the field beyond entry-level training. The current revision takes this notion considerably further in two ways. First, it discriminates between the essential and the advanced levels. Second, it discriminates between competencies which are universally recognized as required of all practitioners and those which have broad but not universal support. The current edition has added a section called "Professional Foundations." This section explicitly recognizes the importance of a knowledge base for ID and the professional responsibility practitioners have for career-long learning and update of that knowledge base. This recognition of knowledge as a foundation to practice was left implicit in the first version. The current revision has also found a way to recognize the importance of technological competence for the practitioner while continuing to recognize both the volatility and the context-specificity of expertise with any particular technology. The section now called "Implementation and Management" represents a considerable strengthening of the intent of the original. This represents both a better awareness of the role these competencies play in ID and also the increasing importance of ID in the success of knowledge-based enterprises, especially in business environments.
