Book excerpt: Aquaculture now supplies half of the seafood and fisheries products consumed worldwide and is gaining international significance as a source of food and income. Future demands for seafood and fisheries products can only be met by expanded aquaculture production. Such production will likely become more intensive and will depend increasingly on nutritious and efficient aquaculture feeds containing ingredients from sustainable sources. To meet this challenge, Nutrient Requirements of Fish and Shrimp provides a comprehensive summary of current knowledge about nutrient requirements of fish and shrimp and supporting nutritional science. This edition incorporates new material and significant updates to information in the 1993 edition. It also examines the practical aspects of feeding of fish and shrimp. Nutrient Requirements of Fish and Shrimp will be a key resource for everyone involved in aquaculture and for others responsible for the feeding and care of fish and shrimp. It will also aid scientists in developing new and improved approaches to satisfy the demands of the growing aquaculture industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a rich resource of important information on coldwater fish farming and coldwater fisheries management, including new research and recent technological advances. It aims to provide an understanding of the underlying mechanisms of coldwater physiology of fishes, which is essential for effective fishery management and for taking advantage of their vast potential application in aquaculture. Coldwater Fisheries and Aquaculture Management: Technology for Sustainable Food Production elaborates on key aspects associated with reproductive biology and endocrinology of coldwater fishes, such as gonadal development and maturation, vitellogenesis, steroidogenesis, whole genome information of fishes, transcriptomics, proteomics, and more. It also looks at genetic modification of coldwater fishes, phytobiotic-based feed to attain profitability in aquaculture, and the nutritional requirements of coldwater fishes, such as plant-based proteins in fish diets and feeding carbohydrates to fish. It also describes the beneficial dietary nutrition of fish consumption by humans. Several chapters address the various challenges to coldwater fish and fishery management, such as fish bacterial diseases (along with their immune components and defense mechanisms), unpredictable nature of climate change on fish, water pollution, etc. The volume also offers strategies on the sustainable management of fish that include looking at pollution in freshwater ecosystems, biotechnological interventions, predicting threats to fish from climate change, and other factors. This volume will be of value to those in fishery management and fish science as well as to marine researchers, faculty and students, and other involved with aquaculture science and management.

In an age where chemicals and antibiotics are under greater scrutiny than ever, a strong understanding of the role of nutrients and feed additives is essential in the aquaculture industry. Dietary Nutrients, Additives and Fish Health is a comprehensive review of dietary nutrients, antinutritional factors and toxins, and non-nutrient dietary additives, and their effects on fish performance and immune system function, as well as overall health. The book opens with an overview of fish immune systems and health. Subsequent chapters delve into proteins and amino acids, lipids and fatty acids, carbohydrates, beta glucans, vitamins, minerals, antinutrients, mycotoxins, nucleotides, prebiotics, probiotics, organic acids and their salts, and plant extracts and their impacts on fish health, growth, and development. The text then concludes with a chapter on feeding practices. Authored by leaders in aquaculture, Dietary Nutrients, Additives and Fish Health will be an invaluable resource to graduate students, researchers and professionals alike.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corn gluten meal (CGM) is a high protein ingredient commonly used in fish feeds. However, studies suggest that diets containing high levels of CGM elicit lower voluntary feed intake, growth and lower efficiency of utilization of limiting amino acid (AA) compared to other protein sources. It has been hypothesized that the AA profile of CGM (low lysine, excess leucine) could be responsible for these effects or protein from CGM could be digested faster than other protein sources, resulting in faster absorption and less efficient utilization of its AAs. A series of studies were conducted to examine the effect of feeding CGM on growth, efficiency of lysine utilization and the dynamics of protein digestion in rainbow trout. Results of growth trial indicated that weight gain, FE and nitrogen retention efficiency were significantly lower in fish fed CGM-based diets compared to those fed WGM based diets. Digestibility trial results revealed lower apparent digestibility of crude protein in CGM-based diets compared to that of WGM-based diets. The efficiency of digestible lysine utilization did not differ between the CGM and WGM-based diets. Serial digesta sampling of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of rainbow trout and blood sampling were carried out to estimate digesta transit time and plasma AA concentrations. Results indicate that CGM-based diets passed through the GI tract four times faster than WGM-based diets. The ratios of plasma leucine to branched-chain amino acids, and leucine to lysine, were generally higher, for fish fed CGM-based diets compared to those fed WGM-based diets. To examine the impact of the excess leucine on growth performance and efficiency of AA utilization, rainbow trout were pair-fed CGM or WGM-based diets formulated to be deficient in lysine and contain adequate and excess leucine levels. Results indicated that excess leucine did not affect growth and efficiency of lysine utilization. The results from this thesis suggest that the lower digestibility of protein and AAs of CGM may in part explain the lower performance of CGM-based diet compared to other protein sources in some studies. Differences in the dynamics of digestion and absorption of AAs and their appearance in the circulation are evident. Therefore, it should be examined further in future studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global aquaculture production has grown rapidly over the last 50 years. It is generally accepted that there is limited potential to increase traditional fisheries since most fish stocks are well or fully exploited. Consequently increased aquaculture production is required in order to maintain global per capita fish consumption at the present level. Fish farming enables greater control of product quality and safety, and presents the possibility of tailoring products according to consumer demands. This important collection reviews safety and quality issues in farmed fish and presents methods to improve product characteristics. The first part of the book focuses on chemical contaminants, chemical use in aquaculture and farmed fish safety. After an opening chapter discussing the risks and benefits of consumption of farmed fish, subsequent contributions consider environmental contaminants, pesticides, drug use and antibiotic resistance in aquaculture. Part two addresses important quality issues, such as selective breeding to improve flesh quality, the effects of dietary factors including alternative lipids and proteins sources on eating quality, microbial safety of farmed products, parasites, flesh colouration and off-flavours. Welfare issues and the ethical quality of farmed products are also covered. The final part discusses ways of managing of product quality, with chapters on HACCP, monitoring and surveillance, authenticity and product labelling. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, Improving farmed fish quality and safety is a standard reference for aquaculture industry professionals and academics in the field. Reviews safety and quality issues in farmed fish and presents methods to improve product characteristics Discusses contaminants, persistent organic pollutants and veterinary drug residues and methods for their reduction and control Addresses important quality issues, genetic control of flesh characteristics and the effects of feed on product nutritional and sensory quality

Book excerpt: Rainbow trout were fed 9 weeks with 9 diets (2 replicates for each diet) design to study the effect of taurine and other related bioactive components included in low fish meal recipe on performances, nutrient digestibilities and taurine content in the fish. The SGR and FCR were not affected by the different recipes or components tested. Taurine content in the feed appear to have positive correlation with taurine body level without affecting lipid digestibility. Soybean meal was found to affect protein and carbohydrates digestibilities and to have a possible negative effect on bile salts synthesis and reabsorption. Taurocholate results needed some more analysis before conclude any statement. Results confirm that rainbow trout are able to synthesise taurine from cystine and moreover that the synthesis from the cystine might be preferred as the taurine uptake from the feed when the cystine level in the diet is high.
