Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a rich resource of important information on coldwater fish farming and coldwater fisheries management, including new research and recent technological advances. It aims to provide an understanding of the underlying mechanisms of coldwater physiology of fishes, which is essential for effective fishery management and for taking advantage of their vast potential application in aquaculture. Coldwater Fisheries and Aquaculture Management: Technology for Sustainable Food Production elaborates on key aspects associated with reproductive biology and endocrinology of coldwater fishes, such as gonadal development and maturation, vitellogenesis, steroidogenesis, whole genome information of fishes, transcriptomics, proteomics, and more. It also looks at genetic modification of coldwater fishes, phytobiotic-based feed to attain profitability in aquaculture, and the nutritional requirements of coldwater fishes, such as plant-based proteins in fish diets and feeding carbohydrates to fish. It also describes the beneficial dietary nutrition of fish consumption by humans. Several chapters address the various challenges to coldwater fish and fishery management, such as fish bacterial diseases (along with their immune components and defense mechanisms), unpredictable nature of climate change on fish, water pollution, etc. The volume also offers strategies on the sustainable management of fish that include looking at pollution in freshwater ecosystems, biotechnological interventions, predicting threats to fish from climate change, and other factors. This volume will be of value to those in fishery management and fish science as well as to marine researchers, faculty and students, and other involved with aquaculture science and management.

Book excerpt: This manual deals in two volumes with the practical aspects of management related to freshwater fish culture in earthen ponds. The first volume (FAO Training Series No. 21/1, 1996, ISBN 92-5-102873-7, US$51.00) explains how to manage the pond itself. This second volume deals with how to manage fish stocks and, as a whole, a fish farm. Fish handling, propagation, feeding, harvesting, grading and storage are explained in simple terms, as well as the prevention and treatment of simple fish diseases and the monitoring of fish farm activities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the continuing decline of commercial stocks of wild-caught fish, the interest in the culture of cold-water marine fish is rapidly growing, with much ongoing research into the development of this area. This important and timely book reviews the current and potential future situation concerning the major exploited marine fish species, such as cod, haddock, hake, wolf-fish, halibut, turbot and sole. The editors of Culture of Cold-Water Marine Fish have drawn together and carefully edited chapters from a wide range of international scientists. The contents list includes detailed reviews of abiotic factors, microbial interactions, prophylaxis and disease, live food and first feeding technologies, brood stock and egg production, functional development, weaning and nursery, on-growing to market size, status and perspectives for the species covered, stock enhancement and sea ranching, and an analysis of the finances, economics and markets for the fish species used in marine aquaculture. Culture of Cold-Water Marine Fish is an essential purchase for personnel involved in marine aquaculture, whether managing fish farms, supplying equipment and feed to the industry, or researching, studying or teaching the subject. Marine biologists, fisheries scientists, fish biologists, ecologists and environmental scientists will all find much of use and interest in this timely book. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where these subjects are studied and taught should have copies.

Book excerpt: Although some nations, such as Japan, have invested in aquaculture research and developed major aquaculture industries, the opportunities for similar devel opment in the United States remain largely unnoticed. In a typical recent year the United States, which claims 20% of the world's marine fisheries resources, imported seafood worth $4. 8 billion and exported $l. 3 billion. In addition to the $3. 5 billion deficit in food-fish, was another $2. 7 billion deficit for nonedible fishery products. Next to oil, fishery products constituted the second highest drain on the United States balance of payments and accounts for a significant portion of the foreign trade deficit. Furthermore, fish consumption has been increasing in North America. In response to the demand for fishery products, aquaculture managers not only have the opportunity to realize economic profit, but in doing so can make an important contribution to reducing the national debt, providing employment, and enhancing our diet. This book might be considered a farm management text for those in aquaculture. It is intended to provide an introduction to aquaculture principles and an introduction to management, including business and people management, microeconomics, and the concepts of efficiency and productivity. I hope it will bridge the gap between conservationists, the academic community, and commer cial culturists. Abundant references should enable the reader to quickly access literature on most topics germane to the management of culture systems.

Book excerpt: This was the first effort to standardize methods for inland fish sampling across North America and, as such, was a joint effort contributed to by a large group of talented and dedicated individuals, in addition to the authors and coeditors. While these sampling methods were primarily developed for North America, most could be used with little or no modification in other areas of the world. Those involved with standard sampling efforts in North America would welcome the opportunity to collaborate with scientists from other regions to develop methods to share data worldwide.

Book excerpt: Designed for beginning-level readers who have not yet completed more technical coursework in math and science, this book introduces the breadth of the fisheries conservation and management process--rather than the depths and details of specific fisheries conservation and management settings. It provides a broad background--including basic information on fish, their habitats, and people who fish for them; provides numerous examples of both successes and failures, strengths and weaknesses of particular conservation or management strategies and programs (See Chs. 8, 12); and focuses on the laws that govern the management process and management activities--(i.e., regulating harvest, the use of hatcheries in fisheries management, habitat- related management) and on the types of management and conservation activities that are used.

Book excerpt: Being able to access fish and other aquatic resources in inland waters for nutrition and food security is essential for rural populations in many developing countries and inland fisheries contribute significantly to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security, and the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication, are tools allowing governments to strengthen governance and develop policies that secure equitable distribution of benefits and empower stakeholders. This document examines the tenure systems, rights and governance issues in the vast, diverse and complex inland fisheries of India. The objective is to highlight how inland fisheries have been changing and the associated challenges for governance and tenure. The legal and policy contexts, within which fishing in rivers, wetlands and estuaries takes place, are described as well as the diversity of fishing activities and practices in the different environments found in India, which include inland capture fisheries, culture-based fisheries and freshwater aquaculture systems. Multiple drivers of change that affect inland fisheries are discussed from within the fisheries sector and from wider social, economic and environmental contexts. The ways in which formal and informal institutional arrangements and customary access regimes interact with each other are highlighted. The potential outcomes of institutional change and emerging policies for ecological sustainability, economic equity and social justice are discussed, with a focus on capture fisheries within India’s inland fisheries.

Book excerpt: In all the developing countries, the vast natural resource have great potentials for the production of fish. Natural water resource are categorized on the basis of altitude, temperature and salinity. The different fish species have adopted as per water ecosystem. Out of identified about 22000 fish species, only 10% belongs to freshwater. Only 107 species have been found suitable as culturable. Hence, major chunk of fish are not cultured by man but used by him as food or other uses. It is therefore, the natural fisheries is very important for human being and proper management and legislation are needed to have the sustainable production. The text of the book is written in simple language so as understandable by scientists, extension workers, students and farmers. References and literature for further reading have been given in the end. Note: T&F does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
