Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can the U.S. keep its dominant economic position in the world economy with only 30% of its population holding bachelor’s degrees? If the majority of U.S. citizens lack a higher education, can the U.S. live up to its democratic principles and preserve its political institutions? These questions raise the critical issue of access to higher education, central to which are America’s open-access, low-cost community colleges that enroll around half of all first-time freshmen in the U.S. Can these institutions bridge the gap, and how might they do so? The answer is complicated by multiple missions—gateways to 4-year colleges, providers of occupational education, community services, and workforce development, as well as of basic skills instruction and remediation. To enable today’s administrators and policy makers to understand and contextualize the complexity of the present, this history describes and analyzes the ideological, social, and political motives that led to the creation of community colleges, and that have shaped their subsequent development. In doing so, it fills a large void in our knowledge of these institutions. The “junior college,” later renamed the “community college” in the 1960s and 1970s, was originally designed to limit access to higher education in the name of social efficiency. Subsequently leaders and communities tried to refashion this institution into a tool for increased social mobility, community organization, and regional economic development. Thus, community colleges were born of contradictions, and continue to be an enigma. This history examines the institutionalization process of the community college in the United States, casting light on how this educational institution was formed, for what purposes, and how has it evolved. It uncovers the historically conditioned rules, procedures, rituals, and ideas that ordered and defined the particular educational structure of these colleges; and focuses on the individuals, organizations, ideas, and the larger political economy that contributed to defining the community college’s educational missions, and have enabled or constrained this institution from enacting those missions. He also sets the history in the context of the contemporary debates about access and effectiveness, and traces how these colleges have responded to calls for accountability from the 1970s to the present.Community colleges hold immense promise if they can overcome their historical legacy and be re-institutionalized with unified missions, clear goals of educational success, and adequate financial resources. This book presents the history in all its complexity so that policy makers and practitioners might better understand the constraints of the past in an effort to realize the possibilities of the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In volume one, Kerr describes the private life of the university from his first visit to Berkeley as a graduate student at Stanford in 1932 to his dismissal under Governor Ronald Reagan in 1967. Early in his tenure as a professor, the Loyalty Oath issue erupted, and the university, particularly the Berkeley campus, underwent its most difficult upheaval until the onset of the Free Speech Movement in 1964. Kerr discusses many pivotal developments, including the impact of the GI Bill and the evolution of the much-emulated 1960 California Master Plan for Higher Education. He also discusses the movement for universal access to education and describes the establishment and growth of each of the nine campuses and the forces and visions that shaped their distinctive identities.
Book Synopsis Tribes Education and Gender Question by : Sanjay K. Roy
Download or read book Tribes Education and Gender Question written by Sanjay K. Roy and published by Northern Book Centre. This book was released on 2005 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite 58 years experimentation with the policy of protective discrimination and planned development a large majority of the 80.2 million tribal people languish in abject poverty, landlessness, powerlessness, illiteracy and malnutrition. Being caught in the hangover of the strong patriarchic tradition the women of nearly 700 marginalized tribal communities find themselves highly exploited, subjugated and voiceless. The present book, first of its kind on tribes living in northern districts of West Bengal (popularly known as North Bengal), explores the areas of subjugation of tribal life and particularly that of the tribal women and analytically presents the case of tribal women in a tea garden locale in the Dooars region of Jalpaiguri district. The focus of the study has been education, i.e. how the tribes in general and tribal women in particular are doing in the field of education. The field of education is chosen because it is generally considered the most important force of empowerment, enlightenment and social transformation and because it provides us with a field to explore the areas of gender discrimination subsumed in tribal patriarchy. The book has approached the problem of tribal education and the gender question in education against the backdrop of the dialectics of dominant-subordinate relationship between the state and the dominant society on the one hand and the marginalized tribes on the other. The uniqueness of the book lies in its critical approach to the state-sponsored development strategies and its emphasis on a ‘cultural approach’ for a better understanding of the problem and for working out alternative development strategies for improving the educational status of the tribal communities. Sanjay K. Roy, Reader, Department of Sociology, North Bengal University, West Bengal, had his Ph. D. from Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University, and pursued post-Doctoral research at the University of Sussex (UK) and University of Wollongong (Australia). Dr Roy has edited a volume on Refugees and Human Rights (2001) and contributed a good number of research papers to the leading journals, volumes and to national and international seminars/workshops. His areas of interest include sociological theories, urban poor, refugee studies, political sociology and gender studies. Dr Roy has completed a number of research projects; the latest being Gender Profile of Tribes of North Bengal, which has been carried out for the Centre for Women’s Studies, North Bengal University.

Download or read book Rafael Viñoly written by Rafael Viñoly and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2002-11-21 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rafael Vinoly became famous as the architect of the stunning Tokyo International Forum (1989-1996). In Japan, where land is at a premium and public spaces are rare, the Forum with its 2.7 hectares and unusual design of public space, was widely admired. Originating in Uruguay, Vinoly heads an architectural office with an impressive list of projects in the areas of architecture, urban planning and interior design, including significant buildings such as the Philadelphia Regional Performing Arts Center which opened recently, Princeton University Stadium, the New Bronx Supreme Criminal Court Complex. In 1969 Vinoly founded his first office in Buenos Aires which was influenced by the Modern Movement but also by the ideas and concepts of the 1960s reflected in the work of Buckminster Fuller, Archigram and the Smithsons. Due to the political situation he emigrated and opened an office in New York in 1982. Despite the difficulties involved in starting over again in a new country where in the meantime post-modernism was prevalent, Vinoly stayed true to his style of architecture, feeling bound to the ethical considerations of modernism yet constantly questioning it, adapting it to changing conditions. With offices in New York and Tokyo, Rafael Vinoly Architects is now one of the most successful architectural offices worldwide. This book documents a large number of Vinoly's most significant buildings and projects. It also includes an essay by Joan Ockman, one of the best-known architecture theoreticians in the USA, and texts by Rafael Vinoly on his career which has been marked by the difficult political situation in Argentina and the cultural exchange between S. America, Europe and the USA.
Download or read book Berea College written by Shannon Wilson and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2006-03-03 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Berea College’s spiritual motto, “God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth,” has shaped the institution’s unique culture and programs since its founding in 1855. Founder John G. Fee, an ardent abolitionist, held fast to the radical vision of a college and a community committed to interracial education, to the Appalachian region, and to the equality of women and men hailing from all “nations and climes.” A significant distinction in the Berea mission is that rather than following the typical tuition-based model, the college developed a tuition-free work program so that its students could take advantage of a private liberal arts education otherwise unaffordable to them. Using primary sources, recent scholarship, and powerful photographs, Shannon H. Wilson charts the fascinating history and development of one of Kentucky’s most distinguished institutions of higher learning.
