Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report develops a sensitivity model to measure the impact of bidding for & hosting the 2010 Winter Olympic & Paralympic Games and the impact of the attendant international media exposure on tourism volumes. The model estimates the gross domestic product, tax revenue, & employment effects under a range of cost & tourism conditions. It segregates the incremental economic impact, in a sense the net profit to the British Columbia & federal treasuries uniquely attributable to the Games, from the gross economic impact, and examines the tourism-related impacts over an extended period. The model results are presented for four scenarios which reflect the experience at other Olympics & international expositions: a conservative scenario based on a minimal marketing effort, an aggressive scenario based on a highly effective & focussed high-impact international marketing campaign, and two in-between scenarios reflecting average & better than average marketing efforts. The impact on the model of external risks such as a prolonged recession, uncertain broadcast revenue, & interruption of the Games is also discussed. The appendix contains details of the economic model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid expansion of the tourism industry has provided many economic benefits and affected every facet of contemporary societies including employment, government revenue and cultural manifestations. However, tourism can also be considered a problematic phenomenon, promoting dependency, underdevelopment and adverse sociocultural effects, especially for developing countries. This pioneering work provides a comprehensive review of these complex tourism issues from a sociological perspective. Various theoretical and empirical approaches are introduced and the following issues are discussed: * identifiable and stable forms of touristic behaviour and roles * social divisions within tourism * the interdependence of tourism and social institutions * the effects of transnational tourism and commodification on the ecosystem. Featuring international contributions from nine different countries, this book brings together the most noted theoretical and empirical studies and enriches them with diverse experiences and perspectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sport has become a global business. There is no corner of the Earth that isn't reached by coverage of global sporting mega-events such as the Olympics or the World Cup, events managed by international governing bodies such as the IOC and FIFA that operate like major international businesses. Companies such as Nike now design, produce, distribute and market their products across every continent, while an increasingly important part of every country's sport market is now international in terms of its influences and opportunities. This book is the first to examine the economics of contemporary sport using the global market as the primary unit of analysis. Starting with a survey of the changing nature of the sports market over the last hundred years, the book explores the difficulties of measuring the true scale and impact of the global sports economy, employing a wealth of empirical data to define and analyze the sports market and all its sub-sectors. In doing so, the book draws on case studies from the UK, Europe, North America and beyond. This book is essential reading for any student or professional with an interest in the economics of sport.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This update was commissioned to review a January 2002 study of the economic impact of hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics, make adjustments when appropriate, and update the study with more recent information on expected spending & revenues. The introduction describes basic concepts of economic impact used in the report. Part 1 reviews the logic & data employed in the economic impact model used in the January 2002 study: specifically, whether the model captures & isolates the incremental economic impact of the Games. The non-tourism aspects and tourism aspects of the model are reviewed separately and the revisions undertaken in the updated model are listed. Part 2 contains the following: a review of the updates to the economic multipliers applied to the Games-related expenditures, with explanation of the appropriate use of economic multipliers and the limitations of multiplier analysis; presentation of the direct, indirect, & induced incremental economic impacts of the Games as generated by the updated model; discussion & analysis of several supplemental issues; and the conclusions resulting from the economic impact study. Appendices provide supplemental background & analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of politicians is to attract new investment to their city or region in order to develop infrastructure such as telecommunications, transportation, housing or even sport and entertainment facilities. Sporting events are also intended to achieve intangible ends such as a better image, more know-how, stronger networks, emotional commitment and additional cultural benefits and enhanced identity. All these so called ‘event structures’ can improve sites in a city/region by strengthening certain location factors. They may improve general living conditions in the longer term and also boost the income of citizens by attracting new businesses, tourists, conventions or new events. Finally they may foster economic growth at the city, regional or national level. This collection is of particular interest for anyone who intends to enter a bidding process for a major sporting event. It offers the host of an event a good introduction to the potential ways to generate economic benefits and will enhance understanding of the economics behind major sporting events. This book was previously published as a special issue of European Sport Management Quarterly

Book excerpt: 2024 marks the 100-year anniversary of the winter sports week festival celebrated in Chamonix in 1924, which is now recognized as the first Olympic Winter Games. As a globally watched quadrennial mega-event, the Winter Olympics is unique from both summer sport festivals and other winter festivals, such as the Winter X Games. This book explores the impacts, issues, and legacies of the past century of the Olympic Winter Games. Grounded in sport history, the chapters in this volume draw on the disciplines of cultural history, diplomatic history, global history, environmental history, and media history to analyze the continued allure of the Winter Olympics, a century after its origin, and in light of the sustained and significant problems facing the Olympic movement. Host cities’ efforts to create positive and lasting legacies are analyzed to highlight the challenges and complexities that have plagued the Olympic movement throughout the last century. The Olympic Winter Games at 100 is essential reading for any researcher, advanced student or scholar with an interest in Olympic Studies, sports development, sport policy and history. The chapters in this book were published as two special issues in The International Journal of the History of Sport.

Book excerpt: Olympic and Paralympic Games impact studies are carried out as part of the Games host city’s obligations to the International Olympic Committee according to the methodology proposed in the technical manual in 2007. The objective of this study is to identify and assess the Games impact on the country, region and host city where the Games will be staged, and to evaluate the Games legacy for future Games organizers. The research methodology is based on the concept of sustainable development and the Games impact is analyzed in the context of three areas of development: economic, socio–cultural and environmental. The focus is on the long–term impact of the Games.
