Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume reviews our past and present understanding of the ecology of Australian freshwater fishes. It compares patterns and processes in Australia with those on other continents, discusses the local relevance of ecological models from the northern hemisphere and considers how best to manage our species and their habitats in the face of current and future threats. In view of these challenges, the need for redress is urgent. The chapters are written by some of our foremost researchers and managers, developing themes that underpin our knowledge of the ecology, conservation and management of fish and fish habitats. For each theme, the authors formulate a synthesis of what is known, consider the need for new perspectives and identify gaps and opportunities for research, monitoring and management. The themes have an Australian context but draw upon ideas and principles developed by fish biologists in other parts of the world. The science of freshwater fish ecology in Australia has grown rapidly from its roots in natural history and taxonomy. This book offers an introduction for students, researchers and managers, one that the authors hope will carry Australian fish biology and resource management to new levels of understanding.

Book excerpt: As pressures on Australia’s inland waters intensify frompopulation growth, expanding resource development and climatechange, there is an urgent need to manage and protect these specialareas. Understanding their ecology underpins their wisemanagement and conservation. Australian Freshwater Ecology vividly describes thephysical, chemical and biological features of wetlands, lakes, streams, rivers and groundwaters in Australia. It presentsthe principles of aquatic ecology linked to practical managementand conservation, and explains the causes, mechanisms, effects andmanagement of serious environmental problems such as altered waterregimes, eutrophication, salinization, acidification and sedimentation of inland waters. Key features: contributions from a diverse, highly qualified team of aquaticecologists whose expertise spans the ecology and management of standing and running waters inAustralia sections covering groundwaters, biodiversity, temporary andtropical waters, climate change, invasive species and freshwater conservation numerous Australian case-studies and guest ‘text-boxes’showing management in practice concise descriptions of ecological processes and conceptual modelsillustrated with original, high- quality diagrams and photographs Readable and logically structured, this text supports undergraduateand postgraduate courses in aquatic ecology and management. It is avaluable reference for consultants, restoration ecologists, waterresource managers, science teachers, and other professionals with an interest in theecology of surface and groundwaters.

Book excerpt: Freshwater Fishes of North-Eastern Australia provides details of the ecology, systematics, biogeography and management of 79 species of native fish present in the region. It includes detailed information on their identification, evolutionary history, breeding biology, feeding ecology, movement patterns, macro-, meso- and micro-habitat use, water quality tolerances, conservation status and current threats, as well as environmental flow and management needs. Based on the results of extensive field surveys and a comprehensive review of existing literature, it is designed to assist environmental practitioners and managers to make informed decisions about future management strategies. It will also encourage a greater research effort into the region’s aquatic fauna by providing a comprehensive resource that enables other researchers to adopt a more quantitative and strategic framework for their research. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many ways, this book is the culmination of more than four decades of my exp- ration of the taxonomy, biogeography and ecology of New Zealand’s quite small freshwater fish fauna. I began this firstly as a fisheries ecologist with the New Zealand Marine Department (then responsible for the nation’s fisheries research and mana- ment), and then with my PhD at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA in the early–mid 1960s. Since then, employed by a series of agencies that have successively been assigned a role in fisheries research in New Zealand, I have been able to explore very widely the natural history of that fauna. Studies of the fishes of other warm to cold temperate southern lands have followed, particularly southern Australia, New Caledonia, Patagonian South America, the Falkland Islands, and South Africa and, in many ways, have provided the rather broader context within which the New Zealand fauna is embedded in terms of geography, phylogeny, and evolutionary history, and knowing this context makes the patterns within New Zealand all the clearer. An additional stream in these studies, in substantial measure driven by the beh- ioural ecology of these fishes round the Southern Hemisphere, has been exploration of the role of diadromy (regular migrations between marine and freshwater biomes) in fisheries ecology and biogeography, and eventually of diadromous fishes wor- wide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the discovery of Australia’s fishes from the earliest days of taxonomy to the first part of the 20th century. It provides a unique insight into the diverse pathways by which Australia’s fish were discovered and outlines the history of early maritime explorations in Australia that collected natural history specimens. The book covers the life and work of each of the most important discoverers, and assesses their accomplishments and the limitations of their work. Discovery of Australia’s Fishes is distinctive in that a biographic approach is integrated with chronological descriptions of the discovery of the Australian fish fauna. Many of northern Australia’s fishes are found in parts of the Indian and western Pacific oceans. The book covers the work of collectors who travelled outside Australia, together with that of the British and European zoologists who received and described their collections. The account ceases at 1930, the year the first modern checklist of Australian fishes was published. 2012 Whitley Award Commendation for Historical Zoology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accurate identification of fish ‘ear-bones’, known as otoliths, is essential to determine the fish prey of marine and terrestrial predators. Fish otoliths are species-specific when combining size, shape and surface features, and can remain undigested for long periods. As a result, they can indicate which fish make up the diet of various predators, including cephalopod, seabird, marine mammal and fish species. Such studies are crucial for understanding marine ecosystems, and trophodynamics in particular. Increasingly, these methods are being used to understand the diet of some terrestrial predators, also extending to that of humans in archaelogical studies. Otoliths of Common Australian Temperate Fish offers users a verified reference collection to assist in the accurate identification of species and size of fish using otoliths. It covers 141 fish species from a broad geographic range of the Australian temperate region and includes commercial and non-commercial fish species. A standardised written description of the otolith structure, size and surface features is provided for each species. Included are brief distribution and ecology notes, and regression for both otolith and fish lengths, together with high-quality SEM photographs of the otolith described. This guide will be an essential reference for marine scientists and marine mammal researchers; ornithologists, fisheries researchers and fish biologists studying age and growth or comparative anatomy; and archaeologists. Book excerpt: This is the most comprehensive volume about Australia's incredibly beautiful and interesting freshwater fishes, the rainbowfish, blue-eyes and hardyheads, ever attempted. It shows all species of Australian rainbowfish and blue-eyes, and most of their colour forms known to date, as well as almost all hardyheads and their forms. The quality colour reproduction of the 311 images is as natural as possible. The 26 x 21 cm size of the book, in portrait orientation (almost A 4), allows the images to be large enough to show most species in natural size or larger, and all fish are shown in prime condition. There are also many habitat shots for those readers not being able to visit these places themselves, often showing the type localities the species. The text is informative and up to date and deliberately kept simple to be understood by the general public, and hopefully inspire interest in these unique fishes. A must for all rainbowfish and nature lovers. Just click the Preview button to judge yourself.
