Topics of papers included restoration of mined lands, disturbed wetlands, soils disturbed by seeding and irrigation practices, lands and waters disturbed by removal and dumping of urban snow, and more general topics including effects of climate change over a major river basin and the role of environmental impact assessment in ecological restoration. The final paper is an evaluation of the ecological restoration situation in Canada. Although papers were presented from most parts of Canada, emphasis was on the Canadian prairies.
Book Synopsis Field Guide to Ecosites of Southwestern Alberta by : J. H. Archibald
Download or read book Field Guide to Ecosites of Southwestern Alberta written by J. H. Archibald and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ecological classification system was developed for southwestern Alberta through the analysis of vegetation, soil, site, and forest productivity information. The hierarchical classification system has three levels--ecosite, ecosite phase, and plant community type. Thirty-seven ecosites are described with further detail provided by subdivision into ecosite phase and plant community type. A soil type classification system that describes seventeen soil types was also developed and is presented here. Management interpretations are made for drought, excess moisture, soil rutting hazard, soil compaction hazard, puddling hazard, soil erosion hazard, frost heave hazard, soil temperature limitations, vegetation competition, and windthrow hazard. Color photos and drawings are presented for 112 common plants of southwestern Alberta, and an index listing common and scientific names of illustrated plants is included. Keys to ecological variables, definitions of soil horizon designations, and a glossary are also included.

Book Synopsis Soil Sensitivity to Acid Deposition and the Potential of Soils and Geology in Alberta to Reduce the Acidity of Acidic Inputs by : N. Holowaychuk
Download or read book Soil Sensitivity to Acid Deposition and the Potential of Soils and Geology in Alberta to Reduce the Acidity of Acidic Inputs written by N. Holowaychuk and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 1982, the Western Canada Long Range Transport of Air Pollution (LRTAP) Committee initiated a project to prepare acid sensitivity maps of the four western provinces, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories. The maps were to show the expected sensitivity of soils to acid deposition and the potential of soils and surficial geological materials to reduce the acidity of atmospheric deposition. This report represents the results of Alberta's contribution to the Western LRTAP project. The rating criteria used to prepare the maps were drawn heavily from principles of soil chemistry, geology, and hydrology, as well as soil fertility and plant nutrition. Supporting investigations to confirm actual changes in soils and geology due to acidic precipitation are limited, as are studies of effects on a wide variety of plant species due to these changes.

This book was released on 2008-01-22 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landscape ecology is an integrative and multi-disciplinary science and Principles and Methods in Landscape Ecology reconciles the geological, botanical, zoological and human perspectives. In particular ,new paradigms and theories such as percolation, metapopulation, hierarchies, source-sink models have been integrated in this last edition with the recent theories on bio-complexity, information and cognitive sciences. Methods for studying landscape ecology are covered including spatial geometry models and remote sensing in order to create confidence toward techniques and approaches that require a high experience and long-time dedication. Principles and Methods in Landscape Ecology is a textbook useful to present the landscape in a multi-vision perspective for undergraduate and graduate students of biology, ecology, geography, forestry, agronomy, landscape architecture and planning. Sociology, economics, history, archaeology, anthropology, ecological psychology are some sciences that can benefit of the holistic vision offered by this texbook.
