Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of the Hebrew Poetry To give reality to what had been foreshown in shadows; to accomplish what had been predicted; to expound, in a higher sense, whatever is universal and eternal in morals; to authenticate anew what might have been called in question - these functions were proper to the ministers Of the later Dispensation; and the books of the New Testament are the record of this work of completion, in its several kinds. Yet this is the characteristic of the Christian writings, that they abstain from the endeavor to throw into an abstract or philosophic form those first truths of theology to which the prophets of the Old Testament had given expres sion in symbolic terms and in the figures of the He brew poetry. The parables Of christ - symbolic as they are, but not poetic - touch those things Of the new kingdom Of Heaven which belong to the hu man development of it; or to the administration of the Gospel on earth; or within the consciousness of men singly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Great Religious Poetry The most obvious facts about this collection of poetry are that it is not all great and that it makes strange combinations and sequences. It ranges from the Psalms of David and the Hymn of Cleanthes to the latest free verse. The great hymns that are translated from the Latin and the most radical of the twentieth century verse are alike only in that they show human feeling about the concept that is the foundation of all religion. Many poems that are far from being great belong here because they are significant. There are some persons who say that our age has no religion; others say it is more sincerely religious than any of the great ages of faith that are gone. 1the most intelligent thought of the present bases the authority of religion, not upon revelation, but upon the nature of man. Man's hunger for God is as funda mental and legitimate as his hunger for food and love. Our age may be lost as to what it should believe, but we were never so sure that we must and do believe. The good swimmer knows best how to trust the water; the best life is most reliant upon what some call the Integrity of the Universe and one of the greatest poets called the Everlasting Arms. The great poets have always spoken with authority. In them has the Word been made flesh. Now a war-weary world in search of faith turns to them. The Bible is an anthology of Hebrew literature-the Great Anthology. If no future poets ever rise to so great a height of constructive imagination as those of the classic Hebrew period it will always remain the Bible of the race. A cursory view of other religious poetry shows little that is not based upon the biblical poetry, but the spiritual assets of mankind have never been gathered together that we may see what they are. This book is a step in that direction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Sacred Poetry of the Hebrews A still greater mistake it would be, to suppose any knowledge of the Hebrew necessary to enable us to read these Lectures with profit and pleasure. So happily does the simple genius of the Hebrew language accord with our own; and so excellent a transcript of the original (notwithstanding a few errors) is our common translation of the Scriptures; so completely, so minutely, I might say, does it represent the style and character of the Hebrew writings, that no person who is conversant with it can be at all at a loss in applying all the criticisms of our Author. On this account I will venture to assert, that if the genius of the Translator approached in any degree the clearness, the elegance, the elevation of the Author, these Lectures in our own language would exhibit the subject in a much fairer and more advantageous light than in the original form. The English idiom, indeed, has so much greater analogy to the Hebrew, that the advantages which it pos sesses over the Latin must be obvious to any reader who compares the literal translations in each of these languages. Verse written up to the tenth century show the development of piyut, or liturgical poetry, and retell episodes from the Bible and exalt the glory of God. Medieval works introduce secular ideas in love poems, wine songs and rhymed narratives, as well as devotional verse for specific religious rituals. Themes such as the longing for the homeland run through the ages, especially in verse written after the rise of the Zionist movement, while poems of the last century marry Biblical references with the horrors of the Holocaust. Together these works create a moving portrait of a rich and varied culture through the last 3,000 years.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hebrew Poetry: Sunday Afternoon Lectures Before the Greensboro Law School Poetry is an interesting and instructive part of a nation's history, as it is a production of the intellectual and moral faculties, feelings and sentiments of the people. These faculties, feelings and sentiments are awakened and intensified, in a great degree, by the spectacles of natural beauty and usefulness presented in the earth, seas and skies, which are produced bv the wondrous combina tions of physical laws and agencies everywhere evidencing a wisdom, power and goodness, higher, purer and vaster than human intellect and benevolence; and ever lifting the soul in love, adoration and praise to the great Creator and benefactor, and to the immortal life of a higher and more effulgent glory yet to come. In the poetry of a nation we can feel the pulse-throb of national life that shows its healthful development or decay. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Epic of Israel the Web of Myth, Legend, History, Law, Oracle, Wisdom and Poetry of the Ancient Hebrews IT is the purpose of this volume to encourage a revival of the reading or study of the ancient Scriptures of the Jews, not by scholars or those who make a professional use of them, but by the people at large. To this generation they have as a whole become unattractive and fallen into neglect, except for a conventional and enforced respect, on account of the false light in which they have been left for so many centuries. The pres ent object is to put them in their true light and give them a new interest for the modern man. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetry of the Hebrew Pentateuch: Being Four Essays on Moses and the Mosaic Age The work herewith submitted to the public, consists of the first series of a complete course of Essays on the Poetic Writings of the Old Testament As may naturally be supposed, the Poetry of the inspired Hebrew writers occupied much of my thoughts, of my converse with literary friends, and of my pen. Fragments of this, the first series of Essays, appeared in a Hebrew Christian Monthly, which I originated and edited at Dublin, in 1847, under the title of "Star of Jacob." But the undertaking of a course of Essays on the Sacred Bards of the Old Testament, in all its fulness, was suggested to me by the perusal - immediately after its publication in 1858 - of Mr. Gladstone's great work, "Studies on Homer and the Homeric Age." By way of complying, by anticipation, with probable demands for reasons, for his undertaking and publishing a work of the kind, Mr. Gladstone, at the very outset of his learned Prolegomena, vouchsafes the following: - "I will place in the foreground an explicit statement of the objects which I have in view. These objects are twofold: firstly, to promote and extend the fruitful study of the immortal poems of Homer; and secondly to vindicate for them, in an age of discussion, their just degree both of absolute and, more especially, of relative critical value." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible, Jews and Judaism in American Poetry We meet a Biblical influence in numerous phrases, as, hosts of heaven, wings of morning, chamber in the silent halls of death, quarry slave, etc., but surely the sentiment is Biblical, so familiarly reminiscent of the wisdom of Ec clesiastes, of the philosophic contemplation of the Prophets, of the thought so oft expressed in the well worn Bible phrase: And he was gathered unto his fathers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Poetry of Israel in Its Physical and Social Origins These three Lectures with their Introduction were delivered in London before the British Academy towards the close of 1910, but till this summer I have been unable to prepare them for the press. In the Introduction I recount the materials available for the illustration of the subject; but it was not possible to cover the whole range of these within three hours. I have, therefore, much to add to what was actually spoken. Some of the discussion of technical questions in Lecture I required expansion; and I desired to give in Lecture III as full a translation as was possible of all the poetical passages relevant to the subject. Where it is necessary to quote the original I have done so, for the sake of those who are ignorant of Hebrew, in the letters of our own alphabet. The details of this transliteration are given on page 1 and at the top of page 4; I may say here that in the transliteration of single words in Lecture III and its notes, I have not thought it necessary always to mark the softer forms of the letters b, g, d, k, p, and t. The name of the God of Israel is given as Yahweh, except in the translation of Deborah's song, where, as in our English version, it appears as The Lord. What is said on pages 84, 85 as to the translation of the Song of Deborah, and the division of it into lines, and its rhythms, is applicable to all the translations offered in these Lectures. In connection with the discussion of rhythms and parallelism in Lecture I, the reader should consult Professor G. B. Gray's paragraphs (44-57) on 'The Poetical Forms of the Prophetic Literature' in his 'Commentary on the Book of Isaiah, i-xxxix, ' in the International Critical Commentary, 1912.
