The first of them is the old Beast Epic of "Reynard the Fox," in Caxton's translation from the Flemish. Jacob Grimm believed that these fables of beasts applied, with a strong national feeling, to corruption growing among strong men who wronged the poor and used religion only as a cloak for violence and fraud, were from their origin Teutonic. Like fables elsewhere could in great measure be accounted for by the like suggestion of natural resemblance between beasts and men. But it has been observed that the earliest known use of such fabling by a German writer is in Fredegar's Chronicle, quoted under the year 612 as a rustica fabula of the Lion, the Fox, and the Stag, which distinctly follows Esop, and undergoes change afterwards from the fancy of narrators. The story also of the remedy suggested by the Fox to the sick Lion (see in this volume a chapter of Caxton's Reynart )comes from. Esop. It was developed in the eighth century in a Latin poem ascribed to the Lombard Paulus Diaconus, who may have had it at the court of Charlemagne as matter already familiar among the Franks. Either from Byzantium or through contact with Rome, such fables could readily have passed into the hearing or the reading of Teutonic monks, who cared about God and the people, steeped the fables in minds active for reform, and developed them, as the Teutonic races developed also the Arthurian myths, into forms inseparable from their nationality. On the contrary, whilst they cast reflec tions on the authenticity of the metrical versions, they presented their own fictions as historical facts to a public ready to swallow anything in the shape of a tall' story. Possibly these narratives were founded on fact; but the facts were so lavishly embroidered that they were lost to sight. Each fresh narrator added an individual touch. It was easier to conjure up the wildest fables to explain things which, to the ignorant mind saturated with a belief in the super natural, seemed otherwise inexplicable, than it was to accept such things as being in the ordinary course of nature. The idea of an enchanter once conceived, miraculous powers were assigned to him as a matter of course. By superstition men sought to explain the mysteries of existence, and the secret agencies by which the operations of nature are conducted (prescott). On a question of this kind it is only With great diffidence that one would care to dissent from Mr. Swinburne, who finds it to be blundering and stumbling, and altogether very faulty, and regards Morris very much as an amateur in the matter of the craft of versification. The merit of the book - according to Mr. Swinburne - lies almost entirely in its passion, emotional depth, and truth. But this is probably due to the fact that Morris aimed at something very different from the aims Of Mr. Swinburne. He never attempted to write lines of their own arduous fulness reverent. He often de liberately ignored the aids to that fulness which are given by elision and elision - Mr. Swinburne says - is a law, not a privilege. But Morris aimed at an effect which he could only obtain by his own methods. His verses should be read slowly, almost syllable by syllable, with due regard to their child-like flair/etc, and the reader will soon perceive that a poem like the Defence of Gamer/ere, with its extraordinarily over-lapping lines, and rhymes so unexpected that at first sight they seem rambling and bungling, is a consummate work of art. The feverish wanderings of the half-distraught queen's speech could not have been rendered more magnificently than in this curiously-wrought piece of terza-n'ma. On the subject of Morris's verse we are compelled to differ from Mr. Swinburne, though we cannot enter into the matter very fully here.
