Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrated for their rarity, historical importance, and beauty, the maps of the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries in the collection of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation provide an invaluable resource for the history of settlement in America. In the colonies, maps were essential in facilitating trade and travel, substantiating land claims, and settling boundary disputes. Today, knowing exactly what maps were owned and used during the period gives us a much richer understanding of the aspirations of early Americans. This large, handsome volume -- a carefully researched cultural investigation -- examines how maps were made and marketed, why people here and abroad purchased them, what they reveal about the emerging American nation, and why they were so significant to the individuals who owned them. Among the rare or unique examples included here are several maps that have never before been published. A must for map collectors and historians, this book will also be treasured by the millions who travel each year to Colonial Williamsburg to celebrate their American heritage.
Book Synopsis The Queen's Embroiderer by : Joan DeJean
Download or read book The Queen's Embroiderer written by Joan DeJean and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of How Paris Became Paris, a sweeping history of high finance, the origins of high fashion, and a pair of star-crossed lovers in 18th-century France. Paris, 1719. The stock market is surging and the world's first millionaires are buying everything in sight. Against this backdrop, two families, the Magoulets and the Chevrots, rose to prominence only to plummet in the first stock market crash. One family built its name on the burgeoning financial industry, the other as master embroiderers for Queen Marie-Thérèse and her husband, King Louis XIV. Both patriarchs were ruthless money-mongers, determined to strike it rich by arranging marriages for their children. But in a Shakespearean twist, two of their children fell in love. To remain together, Louise Magoulet and Louis Chevrot fought their fathers' rage and abuse. A real-life heroine, Louise took on Magoulet, Chevrot, the police, an army regiment, and the French Indies Company to stay with the man she loved. Following these families from 1600 until the Revolution of 1789, Joan DeJean recreates the larger-than-life personalities of Versailles, where displaying wealth was a power game; the sordid cells of the Bastille; the Louisiana territory, where Frenchwomen were forcibly sent to marry colonists; and the legendary "Wall Street of Paris," Rue Quincampoix, a world of high finance uncannily similar to what we know now. The Queen's Embroiderer is both a story of star-crossed love in the most beautiful city in the world and a cautionary tale of greed and the dangerous lure of windfall profits. And every bit of it is true.
Book Synopsis Weaving a Legacy by : Clarita Anderson
Download or read book Weaving a Legacy written by Clarita Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteenth-century handwoven coverlets are exceptional windows on the early years of American culture. They are increasingly prized by collectors for their superb craftsmanship and beauty of design as well as their historical significance. Produced by professional weavers, many of whom had fled the industrial revolution in Europe, coverlets were used as the uppermost coverings of beds. In addition to their intricate and colorful designs, many have personal inscriptions woven into their corner blocks or borders. The peak of production for handwoven coverlets was the relatively short period between 1820 and the end of the Civil War, when the weaving industry was rapidly becoming fully mechanized. The Don and Jean Stuck Coverlet Collection at the Columbus Museum of Art is the largest public collection of coverlets in the United States. The works of 185 known weavers are documented here, as are those of many anonymous weavers. With works from the nine most prominent coverlet-producing states and Canada, the collection includes examples of most weave structures and has a broad representation of colors, centerfield and border designs, and corner blocks.

Book Synopsis Ozark Coverlets by : Martha L. Benson
Download or read book Ozark Coverlets written by Martha L. Benson and published by Shiloh Museum. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2012, weavers Marty Benson and Laura Redford undertook a project to fully document each coverlet and associated weavings in the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History collection. Benson and Redford spent more than two years on the study, deciphering the physical, technical, and historic aspects of the coverlets (including homemade and professionally woven) as well as quilts and blankets with handwoven elements in the museum collection. Their work resulted in a meticulously researched body of information for the museum, but why stop there? Benson and Redford believed the stories of the Shiloh Museum coverlets needed to be told, and the museum agreed. Ozark Coverlets explores the techniques and skills of each weaver. It documents weaving patterns and structures and supplies modern weavers with drafts from which to create their own versions of these historic patterns. Finally, it is a record of the lives of the people who made and used these textiles in their homes. Read altogether, the details of each weaver's life--marriage, childbirth, farm and home management--begin to paint a picture of the lives of these "everyday" Ozark women and their families. One can begin to understand their roles in the settlement of northwest Arkansas in the 1800s, their trials during the Civil War, and the ultimate survival of these pioneering families. --From the foreword by Carolyn Reno, collections manager of the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History
