Book Synopsis An African Language Experience by : Dahiru Muhammad Argungu
Download or read book An African Language Experience written by Dahiru Muhammad Argungu and published by Partridge Africa. This book was released on 2017-09-21 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book is about Hausa linguacultural practices. Its primary goal is to demonstrate aspects of the relationship between Hausa language and culture as it affects northern Nigeria, the territory with the largest concentration of native-Hausa speakers on earth today. Using various examples, illustrations and real-life situations, the book seeks to portray Hausa speakers experiences and practices as they daily exploit their language to communicate their needs and, in the process, express their culture. These experiences and practices are realised largely through Hausa verbal and non-verbal means or both which together give rise to linguacultural patterns of behaviour unique to the speakers. It is hoped that readers, particularly non-Hausas, will find the book enjoyable especially in trying to experience what native-Hausa speakers, using their language to communicate, experience during social interactions. Supported by a number of optional activities and exercises, students and teachers of Hausa will particularly find the book not only resourceful and entertaining but also reader-friendly especially with regard to the role of culture in language learning and teaching. Indeed the book has been partly written to encourage the use of Hausa culture in language teaching and learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last 20 years, applied general equilibrium (AGE) modelling has developed from a small academic research program into a routinely used policy assessment tool. Major governments and international agencies maintain AGE research groups, and call for their input to a variety of trade, tax, and other resource allocation issues. This book is a collection of papers representative of recent activity in this field. Contributions have been grouped into a methodological section, a trade section, and a section on energy issues, and this division accurately indicates the focus of the volume. Readers will thus have access to up to date techniques and results currently being used by researchers at the forefront of the research program.

Book excerpt: Computational methods are rapidly becoming major tools of theoretical, pharmaceutical, materials, and biological chemists. Accordingly, the mathematical models and numerical analysis that underlie these methods have an increasingly important and direct role to play in the progress of many areas of chemistry. This book explores the research interface between computational chemistry and the mathematical sciences. In language that is aimed at non-specialists, it documents some prominent examples of past successful cross-fertilizations between the fields and explores the mathematical research opportunities in a broad cross-section of chemical research frontiers. It also discusses cultural differences between the two fields and makes recommendations for overcoming those differences and generally promoting this interdisciplinary work.

Book Synopsis Climate change and hunger: Estimating costs of adaptation in the agrifood system by : Sulser, Timothy
Download or read book Climate change and hunger: Estimating costs of adaptation in the agrifood system written by Sulser, Timothy and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2021-06-16 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report assesses the cost of adaptation to climate change across a range of future climate scenarios and investment options. We focus on offsetting climate change impacts on hunger through investment in agricultural research, water management, and rural infrastructure in developing countries. We link climate, crop, water, and economic models to (1) analyze scenarios of future change in the agriculture sector to 2050 and (2) assess trade-offs for these investments across key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for poverty, hunger, and water. Our reference projections show that climate change slows progress toward eliminating hunger, with an additional 78 million people facing chronic hunger in 2050 relative to a no-climate-change future, over half of them in Africa south of the Sahara. Increased investments can offset these impacts. Achieving this would require that annual investment in international agricultural research increase from US$1.62 billion to US$2.77 billion per year between 2015 and 2050. Additional water and infrastructure investments are estimated to be more expensive than agricultural R&D at about US$12.7 billion and US$10.8 billion per year, respectively, but these address key gaps to support transformation toward food system resiliency. Findings on ranges of costs and trade-offs and complementarities across SDGs will help policymakers make better-informed choices between alternative investment strategies.
