Book excerpt: This thesis is comprised of three parts, focusing on the dynamics of miscible liquid interfaces, the dynamics of ultra-low surface tension liquid interfaces, and the spreading of "rinsing" liquids across rotating, horizontal substrates. Miscible liquids commonly contact one another in natural and technological situations, often as one liquid suspended within another or in the proximity of a solid substrate. A systematic experimental study of the shape evolution of pendant and sessile droplets immersed in miscible environments was conducted. We present experimental findings that have distinctly different shape evolution and time-dependent dynamics from droplets present in immiscible environments, which have been reported previously. A complementary numerical approach to compute the concentration and velocity fields of these systems using a simplified set of governing equations is paired with our experimental findings. Additionally, a study of droplets freely rising through a miscible, more viscous liquid was conducted. We report observations of droplets of water rising through glycerol and corn syrup. A class of ultra-low surface tension liquids are aqueous two-phase solutions, which form by the phase separation of different polymers within an aqueous solution when a critical threshold in concentration of polymer is exceeded. We investigate two configurations of water-water emulsions: a sessile drop, and a drop at a planar liquid-liquid interface of an aqueous two-phase solution. A particular class of liquids that spread across solid surfaces are "rinsing" liquids. When applied to a rotating substrate, the dynamics of rinsing liquids are interesting fundamentally in the interaction of several classic modes of spreading and industrially in a variety of cleaning applications, such as in the manufacturing of silicon wafers. An investigation of the spreading of a rinsing liquid across a horizontal, rotating hydrophilic substrate was conducted. We present experimental findings of the spreading radius of the rinsing liquid, in which we observed four distinct growth rates across the parameter space and use lubrication theory to explain the phenomena.

Many of the most interesting problems are tied to the loss of stability which is realized in preferential positioning and shaping of the interface, so that interfacial stability is a major player in this drama. Typically, solutions of equations governing the dynamics of two fluids are not uniquely determined by the boundary data and different configurations of flow are compatible with the same data. This is one reason why stability studies are important; we need to know which of the possible solutions are stable to predict what might be observed. When we started our studies in the early 1980's, it was not at all evident that stability theory could actu ally work in the hostile environment of pervasive nonuniqueness. We were pleasantly surprised, even astounded, by the extent to which it does work. There are many simple solutions, called basic flows, which are never stable, but we may always compute growth rates and determine the wavelength and frequency of the unstable mode which grows the fastest. This proce dure appears to work well even in deeply nonlinear regimes where linear theory is not strictly valid, just as Lord Rayleigh showed long ago in his calculation of the size of drops resulting from capillary-induced pinch-off of an inviscid jet.

If we can first identify classes of universal behavior, then we can begin building a unified framework to understand nonlinear processes. We performed the first experimental test of the harmonic moments of viscous fingering patterns, grown by injecting air into a thin layer of silicone oil, which was confined between two closely spaced plates, called a Hele-Shaw cell. We observed that the predicted decay of the moments was accurate within our measurement uncertainty, which confirmed the predicted conservation of the moments for zero surface tension. With greater forcing, the air bubble will undergo a secondary tip-splitting instability, where the fingers of air fork into two or more fingers. We discovered two selection rules for the changing base width and the nearly invariant opening angle of fjords, which are the regions of oil between the fingers of air. We then compared our experiments on viscous fingering with diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA), a model of un-stable growth. We calculated that DLA and viscous fingering have the same spectrum of singularities [called f([alpha])] within measurement uncertainty. Since the spectrum is a global encapsulation of the growth dynamics and scaling properties, we say that the two processes are in the same scaling universality class. All of these results for viscous fingering are expected to apply to other physical systems which approximate Laplacian growth, a model of an interface where its growth rate is determined by the local gradient of a field [phi] obeying Laplace's equation [gradient2 phi] = 0. Next we present preliminary work on the experimental test of two predictions for flows in Hele-Shaw cells: 1) soliton-like behavior of two viscous domains and 2) self-similar, universal pinch-off of an inviscid bubble in a viscous liquid. Finally, we report our observations and analysis of a liquid stream with constant viscosity (i.e. Newtonian) which rebounds from the free surface of a moving bath. The stream bounces on a thin layer of lubricating air which is replenished by the relative motion of the jet and the bath.
