Book excerpt: Experiments were conducted on ASTM A572 50 and A992 steel over a range of intermediate strain rates in order to determine material strength properties of structural members subjected to dynamic loadings. The yield and ultimate tensile stress (UTS) of the steels were determined at increasing strain rates using a hydraulic apparatus and compared to static values obtained from ASTM E8 standardized tensile experiments. Results revealed that A572-50 steel exhibited an increase in yield stress of up to 35% and UTS of up to 20% as strain rate increased from 0.002 to 2.0 s-1. A992 steel demonstrated a similar increase in yield stress of up to 45% and UTS of up to 20%. Ratios of dynamic-to-static strengths were used to develop dynamic increase factor curves spanning the range of strain rates studied. These curves provide designers with material property values required for accurate and economical design of protective structures.

Book excerpt: "In structural design, the material properties of steels and the strengths of cold-formed steel members are affected by strain rate. Two subjects were investigated experimentally and analytically in this study. They are 1) effect of strain rate on mechanical properties of sheet steels in tension and compression, and 2) structural strengths of stub columns and beams subjected to dynamic loads. Three sheet steels with nominal yield strengths ranging from 35 to 100 ksi were studied under different strain rates. A total of 124 tensile coupons and 54 compressive coupons were tested in this phase of study. The structural strengths of 37 stub columns and 30 beam specimens fabricated from 35XF sheet steel were investigated in the second phase of this study under different strain rates. The results showed that the material properties as well as the strengths of the structural members increased with the strain rate. The amount of increase was found to be dependent on the material yield strengths and the strain rates used in the tests. The effective width approach included in the current AISI Automotive Steel Design Manual was utilized for the evaluation of member strengths using static and dynamic yield stresses corresponding to the strain rates used in the tests. Good agreement was achieved between the predicted and tested member strengths when using the dynamic yield stresses in the comparison"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic tension tests and static tension tests were conducted on four grades of structural steels. The steels conform to ASTM grades A36, A242, A441, and A572. Stress-strain curves are presented for each steel at various strain rates, ranging from static to about 1.5 in./in./sec. While all steels showed an increase in yield stress with increasing strain rates, the A36 steel showed the greatest increase. Design recommendations are given for structural steels subjected to high strain rates. Additional specimens were strain aged, and stress-strain curves were obtained for both dynamic and static tests. Of the strain-aged steels, only the A36 steel showed a significant increase in strength over the non-strain-aged steels, when loaded dynamically. No adverse effects of strain aging were noted on any of the steels. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of the literature has been conducted to obtain and compile existing experimental data on the pertinent mechanical properties of steels subject to dynamic loading conditions and under a wide temperature range. Data showing the variation of yield strength and elongation with strain rate and temperature are categorized and tabulated. The effect of the dynamic properties of steels due to strain rate variation at room temperature is shown graphically. Separate curves for steels in tension and compression are presented. A comprehensive reference and bibliography section is provided. The behavior of steels under dynamic loading is generally different from that under static loading. The yield strength is higher under dynamic loading, and it decreases with increasing temperature. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: Dual phase (DP) steels are being increasingly used as structural components in the automotive industry owing to their combination of high strength and moderate ductility.Formability and crash resistance are important mechanical properties that expose the steel to high strain rates.Fracture characteristics of a DP steel at strain rates spanning seven orders of magnitude are investigated using quantitative fractography. The DP steel investigated in this study is comprised of a continuous matrix of martensite with interspersed ferrite islands. The data reveal that the flow stress, uniform strain, and ductility are substantially higher at the higher strain rates.Quantitative fractography, employed to understand the fracture characteristics, shows an increase in the extent of ductile fracture at high strain rates. In this presentation, the results demonstrating high strain rates facilitating dimpled ductile fracture and/or increased resistance to faceted fracture are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer Aided Engineering may be defined as an approach to solving tech nological problems in which most or all of the steps involved are automated through the use of computers, data bases and mathematical models. The success of this ap proach, considering hot forming, is tied very directly to an understanding of material behaviour when subjected to deformation at high temperatures. There is general agreement among engineers that not enough is known about that topic -and this gave the initial impetus for the project described in the present study. The authors secured a research grant from NATO (Special Research Grant #390/83) with a mandate to study the "State-of-the-Art of Controlled Rolling". What follows is the result of that study. There are five chapters in this Monograph. The first one, entitled "State-of-the Art of Controlled Rolling" discusses industrial and laboratory practices and research designed to aid in the development of microalloyed steels of superior quality. Follow ing this is the chapter "Methods of Determining Stress-Strain Curves at Elevated Temperatures". The central concern here is the material's resistance to deformation or in other words, its flow strength, the knowledge of which is absolutely essential for the efficient and economical utilization of the computers controlling the rolling process.

Book excerpt: Thermomechanical Processing of High-Strength Low-Alloy Steels considers some advanced techniques and metallurgical bases for controlled-rolling. This book contains 12 chapters. In Chapter 1, the purpose of thermomechanical processing and historical survey is described, while in Chapter 2, the kinetics of phase transformations and refinement of grain size in steels are elaborated. The techniques and metallurgical bases for controlled-rolling in the recrystallization, non-recrystallization, and (? + y) regions are reviewed in Chapters 3 to 5. Chapters 6 and 7 discuss the deformation resistance during hot-rolling and restoration processes. The phase transformations during cooling following hot-rolling are mentioned in Chapter 8, followed by a summarization of the effects of alloying elements in Chapter 9. Chapters 10 and 11 deal with the mechanical properties of controlled-rolled steel and prediction and control of microstructure and properties by thermomechanical processes. The problems faced and possibilities for future developments are stated in the last chapter. This publication is recommended for physicists, metallurgists, and researchers concerned with controlled-rolling, including non-specialists who have some knowledge of metallurgy.
