Book excerpt: Dubliners is a collection of picturesque short stories that paint a portrait of life in middle-class Dublin in the early 20th century. Joyce, a Dublin native, was careful to use actual locations and settings in the city, as well as language and slang in use at the time, to make the stories directly relatable to those who lived there. The collection had a rocky publication history, with the stories being initially rejected over eighteen times before being provisionally accepted by a publisher—then later rejected again, multiple times. It took Joyce nine years to finally see his stories in print, but not before seeing a printer burn all but one copy of the proofs. Today Dubliners survives as a rich example of not just literary excellence, but of what everyday life was like for average Dubliners in their day. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: Dubliners by James Joyce "The Irish are a melancholic bunch" - James Joyce's "Dubliners" proves that old saying. Written in 1914, it is a collection of fifteen stories. The only thread running through the stories and connecting them in Dublin, Ireland. They are organized with the first stories with a child as the narrator, then they progressively age. The characters are middle-class Irish, with varying degrees of national patriotism. The publication of the book was a story in itself. James Joyce sent the book eighteen times to fifteen different publishers. One agreed to publish it if he removed the story, Two Gallants. But, he still refused. Another partially printed it and then refused to return your copy without paying you first. Although he paid them, they still burned him. Fortunately, James Joyce managed to save a copy that he pulled out of them. In 1914 he was finally able to publish it. Dubliners are written simply, with easy-to-follow dialogue. Although it's set in Ireland, it's easy to bond with people when it's located in any middle-income neighborhood. Joyce brings his characters to life using their emotions without using many physical descriptions. The stories are short but to the point. Each story shows an epiphany, or a life-changing moment or an enlightening moment, that changes your point of view. James Joyce wrote these stories with a tendency to closer detail to make the scenarios more realistic. This allows the reader to use the environment to better understand the characters.

Book excerpt: One of the greatest short stories in world literature. »He single-handedly killed the 19th century.« T. S. Eliot »James Joyce revolutionized 20th-century literature.« Time Magazine After a visitation from the dead - through something as concrete as someone singing a particular Irish song - Gabriel Conroy is struck by the profound realization of how superficially he has always loved his wife, Gretta. The image of the falling snow around them, deepening into a cosmic metaphor for life and death as the story progresses, has been called the most beautiful snowfall in literary history. JAMES JOYCE [1882-1941], Irish author, is a key figure in modernist literature with works such as Dubliners [1914], A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man [1916], and Ulysses [1922].

Book excerpt: The debut of Ireland's greatest author and one of the most influential voices in modern literature It took nine years for James Joyce to find a publisher for this vivid, uncompromising, and altogether brilliant portrait of Dublin at the turn of the twentieth century. Now regarded as one of the finest story collections in the English language, it contains such masterpieces as "Araby," "Grace," and "The Dead," and serves as a valuable and accessible introduction to the themes that define Joyce's later work, including the monumental Ulysses. Elegantly interweaving a moral history of Ireland with profiles of brave, flawed, and utterly realistic individuals--many of them clearly drawn from the author's own life--experiencing moments of profound insight, Dubliners is an essential work of art. Book excerpt: With an essay by J. I. M. Stewart. 'Every night as I gazed up at the window I said softly to myself the word paralysis. It had always sounded strangely in my ears ... But now it sounded to me like the name of some maleficent and sinful being. It filled me with fear, and yet I longed to be nearer to it and to look upon its deadly work' From a child grappling with the death of a fallen priest, to a young woman's dilemma over whether to elope to Argentina with her lover, to the dance party at which a man discovers just how little he really knows about his wife, these fifteen stories bring the gritty realism of existence in Joyce's native Dublin to life. With Dubliners, James Joyce reinvented the art of fiction, using a scrupulous, deadpan realism to convey truths that were at once blasphemous and sacramental. The Penguin English Library - 100 editions of the best fiction in English, from the eighteenth century and the very first novels to the beginning of the First World War.
