In addition, it has also been a goal to implement fast estimation techniques for control of resonant converters. For this purpose, PWM signals that are generated using this DSP are used. The demands on the system and the hardware to solve the problem were already decided when I started the work. The algorithms were programmed in C/C++ language, compiled, debugged and transferred to the DSP development board in a compiling and simulation tool (downloader), called CCS (Code Composer Studio v2), also provided by Texas Instruments. In the first chapters of this study I give general information about control systems, digital signal processors, digital signal processing and the DSP used in this work. The following chapters tell about PWM, how to configure the PWM outputs and some examples related with PWM signals are given. After a short review of series resonant converters, I presented the last example implemented in this project. I conclude with a summary and provide some hints of future work.

Book excerpt: The pulse-width modulated (PWM) dc-dc converters play a vital role in several industrial applications that include motor drives, electric vehicles, dc distribution systems, and consumer electronics. The switched-mode power converters step the input voltage up or down based on their typology and provide a regulated output voltage. The stability and regulation performance of a power converter can tremendously be improved via a suitable control design. However, due to the nonlinearity of the power converters and the presence of the line and load disturbances, the design of a robust and low-cost control circuit becomes a challenging task. The sliding-mode control of the dc-dc converters has been studied for decades because of its robustness, design simplicity, and suitability for variable structure systems. Despite the merits of the sliding-mode control method, the linear controllers are still dominant and attractive to the commercial applications since they require less design efforts and can be implemented using simple analogue circuits. This research aims to develop simplified sliding-mode control circuits for the classical PWM dc-dc converters in continuous-conduction mode (CCM). The control objectives are to maintain a constant switching frequency, enhance the transient response, provide wide operating range, and track the desired reference voltage under large disturbances. In order to design and test the control circuit, an accurate power converter model should be derived. Hence, large-signal non-ideal averaged models of dc-dc buck and boost converters in CCM are developed. The models are simulated in MATLAB/SIMULINK and compared with the corresponding circuits in SaberRD simulator for validation purpose. Next, PWM-based simplified sliding-mode voltage and current control schemes are designed for the dc-dc buck and boost converters in CCM, respectively. The design procedure and the analogue realization of the control equations are presented, where the control circuits are constructed with minimal added components. The derivation of the existence and stability conditions is also provided to select the controller gains accordingly. The closed-loop control systems are simulated in MATLAB/SIMULINK and SaberRD under various operating conditions to validate the design approach. The tracking, disturbance rejection, and regulation performance have been investigated. Finally, a PCB prototype of a simplified sliding-mode voltage controlled PWM dc-dc buck converter is designed and tested under large disturbances condition, where the experimental results have showed a good agreement with the simulated results.

A limit on CPL power is also established to ensure system stability. For all proposed solutions, simulation studies and hardware implementations are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed sliding mode controllers.

Power management of a digital System-On-Chip (SOC) is based on dynamic voltage scaling. DC/DC converters used to supply the digital SoCs are facing stringent constraints with respect to load-transients, line-transients and reference tracking. Hysteretic control is known as the most convenient control scheme with a fair trade-off between transient performances, analog implementation and power consumption, particularly for one-phase architecture. The thesis focuses on-board DC/DC with a significant constraint on footprint (i.e. on components count and values). Fixed switching-frequency hysteretic control has been experimented with significant results. Transient performances are reduced due to latency introduced in the switching frequency control. The present study focuses on the improvement of the concept as well as its implementation and the analysis of stability. A new analog implementation of the sliding-mode control is presented with switching-frequency control using a particular analog phase-locked-loop but preserve transient performances. The DC/DC converter is implemented in CMOS 130nm by STMicroelectronics. The switching frequency range has been voluntarily limited and excludes the possible integration of passive components for the sake of silicon access. A hybrid demonstrator is presented with efficiency higher than 80 % between 2.4 mW and 960 mW output power.

Book excerpt: It is well established that the sliding mode control strategy provides an effective and robust method of controlling the deterministic system due to its well-known invariance property to a class of bounded disturbance and parameter variations. Advances in microcomputer technologies have made digital control increasingly popular among the researchers worldwide. And that led to the study of discrete-time sliding mode control design and its implementation. This brief presents, a method for multi-rate frequency shaped sliding mode controller design based on switching and non-switching type of reaching law. In this approach, the frequency dependent compensator dynamics are introduced through a frequency-shaped sliding surface by assigning frequency dependent weighing matrices in a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) design procedure. In this way, the undesired high frequency dynamics or certain frequency disturbance can be eliminated. The states are implicitly obtained by measuring the output at a faster rate than the control. It is also known that the vibration control of smart structure is a challenging problem as it has several vibratory modes. So, the frequency shaping approach is used to suppress the frequency dynamics excited during sliding mode in smart structure. The frequency content of the optimal sliding mode is shaped by using a frequency dependent compensator, such that a higher gain can be obtained at the resonance frequencies. The brief discusses the design methods of the controllers based on the proposed approach for the vibration suppression of the intelligent structure. The brief also presents a design of discrete-time reduced order observer using the duality to discrete-time sliding surface design. First, the duality between the coefficients of the discrete-time reduced order observer and the sliding surface design is established and then, the design method for the observer using Riccati equation is explained. Using the proposed method, the observer for the Power System Stabilizer (PSS) for Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) system is designed and the simulation is carried out using the observed states. The discrete-time sliding mode controller based on the proposed reduced order observer design method is also obtained for a laboratory experimental servo system and verified with the experimental results.
