Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Rugby School: Its History and Its Daily Life The following Papers have been written with the view of supplying a need, which various documents have met in part, but none entirely, - the need of a work embracing the entire History of Rugby School, in its Institution, Buildings, and Educational System. Some amount of definite and accessible information respecting every place of National Education is due to the Public. And for the sake of the School itself, it is surely desirable that its old memories and former associations should not be trusted to the precarious vehicle of tradition, but thrown into the more permanent shape of a written record. Rugby's connections with the past are now of nearly three hundred years' standing, and we feel that she has no reason to be ashamed of them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Correspondence of Thomas Arnold, D.D, Vol. 1: Late Head-Master or Rugby School, and Regius Professor of Modern History in the University of Oxford The sources from which this work has been drawn have necessarily been exceedingly various. It was in fact originally intended that the several parts should have been supplied by different writers, as in the instance of the valuable contribution which, in addition to his kind assistance throughout, has been furnished to the earlier part by Mr. Justice Coleridge; and although, in its present shape, the responsibility of arranging and executing it has fallen upon one person, yet it should still be clearly understood how largely I have availed myself of the aid of others, in order to supply the defects of my own personal knowledge of Dr. Arnold's life and character, which was confined to the intercourse I enjoyed with him, first as his pupil at Rugby, from 1829 to 1834, and thenceforward, on more familiar terms, to the end of his life. To his family, I feel that the fewest words will best express my sense, both of the confidence which they reposed in me by intrusting to my care so precious a charge, and of the manifold kindness with which they have assisted me, as none others could. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rugby There is nothing new in this small book except what has happened since 1900. The present compiler most warmly thanks Dr. W. H. D. Rouse and Mr. H. C. Bradby for their freely-granted permis sion to make use of their excellent books on Rugby School (a History of Rugby School, by W. H. D. Rouse, Duckworth and Co., 1898; and Rugby, by H. C. Bradby, George Bell and Sons, Dr. Rouse has fully investigated all available records, and most of the history here contained is a bare summary of his work. In so small a compass it has been frequently necessary to condense, even to the point of obscurity. For this and many other failings the compiler wishes to apologise to any possible reader. He is glad to feel that the booklet has at least interested one reader - him self, who has found plagiarism more entertaining than one would imagine. Any accuracy it may have is due to the revising care of his friend, G. A. F. M. Chatwin, whose Rugbeian lore much exceeds the writer's, and has been most freely lavished on the purging of errors from these pages. Those that remain are solely the writer's fault. Book Synopsis Dickens and Victorian Print Cultures by : Robert L. Patten
Download or read book Dickens and Victorian Print Cultures written by Robert L. Patten and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume places Dickens at the centre of a dynamic and expanding Victorian print world and tells the story of his career against a background of options available to him. The collection describes a world animated by outpourings of print materials: books, serials, newspapers, periodicals, libraries, paintings and prints, parodies and plagiarisms, censorship, advertising, as well as theatre and other entertainment, and celebrity. It also shows this period as driven by a growing and more literate population, and undergirded by a general conviction that writing was a crucial component of governance and civic culture. The extensive introduction and selected articles anchor Dickens's attempts to establish better conditions for writers regarding copyright protection, pay, status, recognition, and effectiveness in altering public policy. They speak about Dickens's life as playwright, journalist, novelist, editor, magazine publisher, theatrical producer, actor, lecturer, reader of his own works, supporter of charities for impoverished authors and fallen women, exponent of a morality of Christian compassion and domestic affections sometimes put into question by his own actions, proponent and critic of British nationalism, and champion of education for all. This selection of essays and articles from previously published accounts by internationally renowned scholars is of interest to all students and professionals who are fascinated by the composition, manufacture, finance, formats, pictorializations, sales, advertising and influence of Dickens's writing.

Book Synopsis Remaking the Classics by : Christopher Stray
Download or read book Remaking the Classics written by Christopher Stray and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-10-16 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important collection of essays both contributes to the expanding field of classical reception studies and seeks to extend it. Focusing on nineteenth- and twentieth-century Britain, it looks at a range of different genres (epic, novel, lyric, tragedy, political pamphlet). Within the published texts considered, the usual range of genres dealt with elsewhere is extended by chapters on books for children, and those in which childhood and memories of childhood are informed by antiquity; and also by a multi-genre case study of a highly unusual subject, Spartacus. "Remaking the Classics" also goes beyond books to dramatic performance, and beyond the theatre to radio - a medium of enormous power and influence from the 1920s to the 1960s, whose role in the reception of classics is largely unexplored. The variety of genres and of media considered in the book is balanced both by the focus on Britain in a specific time period, and by an overlap of subject-matter between chapters: the three chapters on twentieth-century drama, for example, range from performance strategies to post-colonial contexts. The book thus combines the consolidation of a field with an attempt to push it in new and exciting directions.
