Book excerpt: Triple Jeopardy is a book about resilience written in a powerful, inspiring way. It’s a wakeup call that iterates that you are in control of your own story, no matter the circumstances. ~ Mike Tyson, Former Undisputed Boxing Champion, Best Selling Author, Actor WOW! Triple Jeopardy is a remarkable story that reveals intimate details about the author and her family’s encounter with the criminal justice system. It is emotionally moving, enlightening, thought-provoking, informative, even humorous at times and provides valuable life lessons. This book is a must-read from start to finish. ~ Flavor Flav, Hip-hop Rapper “When I first met Rita Ali, I had just begun working with Mike Tyson on his autobiography, Undisputed Truth. I was far away from my wife and dog back in New York, but Rita, Mike’s mother-in-law, immediately adopted me and made me feel welcome and, ultimately, one of the family. Each day I had some time to kill waiting for Mike to finish up some other business or tend to his pigeons until we could resume our taped interviews, and Rita helped to fill the time by regaling me with stories of her life back in Philadelphia. She had willed herself into being one of the few females to penetrate the world of boxing, first as a reporter and later as a publicist. Her stories of her interactions with Muhammad Ali, Don King, Joe Frazier, were so compelling that I urged her to write her own book! And I suggested it even more forcefully after she related to me the sordid details of her and her family’s persecution by the federal government for crimes that they didn’t commit. Rita went to work and now we have Triple Jeopardy. But rather than being a “woe-is-me” account, her memoir is an empowering document that proves the old adage that you can’t keep a good woman down. You’ll enjoy the anecdotes of the rich and famous celebrities that Rita has crossed paths with but you’ll have to admire the strength, discipline and wisdom that Rita imparts when recounting an overzealous prosecution gone awry. Far from broken, Rita and her lovely family have risen from the ashes of defamation like Phoenixes. “Their story is a cautionary tale that shows that it CAN happen here. And does.” ~ Larry “Ratso” Sloman, co-author with Mike Tyson of Undisputed Truth and Iron Ambition: My Life with Cus D’Amato http://www.ratso.org A woman who has always exhibited beauty, strength and grace, in her memoir Triple Jeopardy, Rita Ali proves that you can always knock-out the opposition. ~ Michael Spinks, Olympic Gold Medalist, Two Division World Champion

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Naval Institute Press and the United States Army Journal, Armor is pleased to offer a unique collection of essays highlighting Iraq’s social, political and military history from a purely Iraqi perspective. Dr. Ali al-Wardi (1913-1995) attended the American University of Beirut in 1943 and then traveled to the United States to attain his Masters and Doctorate degrees in Sociology at the University of Texas in 1948 and 1950 respectively. He would return to Iraq and spend a career teaching, however his main legacy is a multi-volume work in Arabic that began to be published in late 1951 and ended in the early 1970s with his eighth book. It is a two decade work that highlights the history of Iraq from the arrival of the Ottomans to the monarchy of King Feisal I in 1925. Wardi’s volumes are read by a wide variety of Iraqi society, and this volume is an introduction to this pivotal Arabic work to English readers. It brings alive how the Ottomans, British and Safavid Persians dealt with sectarianism in Iraq and the battles fought over key areas of Iraq. It is required reading for those with an interest in or who are deploying to Iraq. Wardi's work also discusses the dynamics of the 1920 Revolt, a year long insurgency against the British that was only satisified when London engineered a political solution to its advantage. That solution became the imposition of a monarchy under King Feisal of Iraq, who was not Iraqi. The monarchy would topple in 1958 and see the rise of Baathism

Book excerpt: When John MacLennan invaded the life of Aileen, a radio talk show host, in 1980 he was already dead. He was on a dissecting table with a pathologist cutting out his heart. Police Inspector MacLennan was found dead in his locked Hong Kong flat. At first glance, his death appeared to be suicide; there was a note. But there were also five bullet wounds in his chest-seemingly too many to be self-inflicted. Rumours swirl about his suspicious death. Maybe MacLennan had upset the gangsters by hounding them. Perhaps he had angered the police by digging too deeply into their culture. He may have offended the Hong Kong government by straying from the party line. The Inspector's death was discussed daily on Aileen's show, debating the question of whether it was suicide or murder. Aileen was threatened with a criminal libel suit for broadcasting and causing open discussion on such a sensitive issue. Based on actual events, Open Verdict offers a fictionalized account of MacLennan's case written by Ken Bridgewater, who lived in Hong Kong at the time. In this real-life mystery, Bridgewater seeks to reveal the facts of this mysterious case.

Book excerpt: “Go back to where you came from, you terrorist!” This is just one of the many warm, lovely, and helpful tips that Wajahat Ali and other children of immigrants receive on a daily basis. Go back where, exactly? Fremont, California, where he grew up, but is now an unaffordable place to live? Or Pakistan, the country his parents left behind a half-century ago? Growing up living the suburban American dream, young Wajahat devoured comic books (devoid of brown superheroes) and fielded well-intentioned advice from uncles and aunties. (“Become a doctor!”) He had turmeric stains under his fingernails, was accident-prone, suffered from OCD, and wore Husky pants, but he was as American as his neighbors, with roots all over the world. Then, while Ali was studying at University of California, Berkeley, 9/11 happened. Muslims replaced communists as America’s enemy #1, and he became an accidental spokesman and ambassador of all ordinary, unthreatening things Muslim-y. Now a middle-aged dad, Ali has become one of the foremost and funniest public intellectuals in America. In Go Back to Where You Came From, he tackles the dangers of Islamophobia, white supremacy, and chocolate hummus, peppering personal stories with astute insights into national security, immigration, and pop culture. In this refreshingly bold, hopeful, and uproarious memoir, Ali offers indispensable lessons for cultivating a more compassionate, inclusive, and delicious America.

Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times bestseller that has all America talking—with a new afterword on expanding your range—as seen on CNN's Fareed Zakaria GPS, Morning Joe, CBS This Morning, and more. “The most important business—and parenting—book of the year.” —Forbes “Urgent and important. . . an essential read for bosses, parents, coaches, and anyone who cares about improving performance.” —Daniel H. Pink Shortlisted for the Financial Times/McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award Plenty of experts argue that anyone who wants to develop a skill, play an instrument, or lead their field should start early, focus intensely, and rack up as many hours of deliberate practice as possible. If you dabble or delay, you’ll never catch up to the people who got a head start. But a closer look at research on the world’s top performers, from professional athletes to Nobel laureates, shows that early specialization is the exception, not the rule. David Epstein examined the world’s most successful athletes, artists, musicians, inventors, forecasters and scientists. He discovered that in most fields—especially those that are complex and unpredictable—generalists, not specialists, are primed to excel. Generalists often find their path late, and they juggle many interests rather than focusing on one. They’re also more creative, more agile, and able to make connections their more specialized peers can’t see. Provocative, rigorous, and engrossing, Range makes a compelling case for actively cultivating inefficiency. Failing a test is the best way to learn. Frequent quitters end up with the most fulfilling careers. The most impactful inventors cross domains rather than deepening their knowledge in a single area. As experts silo themselves further while computers master more of the skills once reserved for highly focused humans, people who think broadly and embrace diverse experiences and perspectives will increasingly thrive.

As a third-year Ph.D. candidate, Olive Smith doesn't believe in lasting romantic relationships--but her best friend does, and that's what got her into this situation. Which is why Olive is positively floored when Stanford's reigning lab tyrant agrees to keep her charade a secret and be her fake boyfriend. But when a big science conference goes haywire, putting Olive's career on the Bunsen burner, Adam surprises her again with his unyielding support and even more unyielding...six-pack abs. Suddenly their little experiment feels dangerously close to combustion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his New York Times bestseller Steal Like an Artist, Austin Kleon showed readers how to unlock their creativity by “stealing” from the community of other movers and shakers. Now, in an even more forward-thinking and necessary book, he shows how to take that critical next step on a creative journey—getting known. Show Your Work! is about why generosity trumps genius. It’s about getting findable, about using the network instead of wasting time “networking.” It’s not self-promotion, it’s self-discovery—let others into your process, then let them steal from you. Filled with illustrations, quotes, stories, and examples, Show Your Work! offers ten transformative rules for being open, generous, brave, productive. In chapters such as You Don’t Have to Be a Genius; Share Something Small Every Day; and Stick Around, Kleon creates a user’s manual for embracing the communal nature of creativity— what he calls the “ecology of talent.” From broader life lessons about work (you can’t find your voice if you don’t use it) to the etiquette of sharing—and the dangers of oversharing—to the practicalities of Internet life (build a good domain name; give credit when credit is due), it’s an inspiring manifesto for succeeding as any kind of artist or entrepreneur in the digital age.
