Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past two decades, the study of prepositions has grown steadily. The papers collected in this volume bring together the multifaceted perspectives on prepositions that have been developed in contemporary linguistics. Some papers mainly discuss syntactic (and morphological) aspects of prepositions; other papers predominantly focus on cognitive aspects. All the papers are, however, concerned with the semantics of prepositions. This volume evolved from a workshop on prepositions held at Hamburg University on June 26 and 27, 1998.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This striking study of the meaning and use of the major spatial prepositions in French provides valuable insight into how the human mind organizes spatial relationships. Most previous analyses of spatial prepositions have assumed that their semantic properties can be adequately explained by familiar logical and geometrical concepts. Thus, the standard view of the preposition "in" as it appears in the sentence "the ball is in the bag" postulates that it refers to the geometrical relation of inclusion. This paradigm, however, falters when faced with the contrast in acceptability between sentences such as "the bulb is in the socket" and "the bottle is in the cap." The force exerted by the "landmark" (a conceptually fixed object) on the "target" (a moveable object) is crucial in this difference: the functional notion of containment seems more operational in the use of the preposition "in" than inclusion. That is, what are taken to be the landmark and the target depend greatly on the functions these objects serve in the human scheme. This offers important clues to otherwise problematic linguistic quirks, such as why one sleeps in one's bed, while one is said to lie on one's deathbed. While many of the examples apply in English as well as French, there are some noteworthy differences—in French one sits on a chair, but in a couch. Vandeloise convincingly argues that it is precisely this subjective element which makes a standard geometrical account unfeasible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'language and space' area is a relatively new research area in cognitive science. Studying how language and spatial representation are linked in the human brain mainly draws on research in existing disciplines focusing on language, perception, categorization and development. Representative researchers from these sub-disciplines of cognitive science discuss new insights in their own field of expertise and show what role their definition of 'function', 'feature'or 'functional feature' plays in their research. New research centered around these concepts is on the forefront of developments in these sub-disciplines and in the area of 'Language and Space'.

Book excerpt: Migration is a multifaceted phenomenon that plays a critical role in today's world, yet there have been few attempts to look beneath the surface of the mass movements of people. Particularly, the changing face of migration is becoming more feminized, with women increasingly moving as independent or single migrants rather than as the wives, mothers, or daughters of male migrants. Yet, in literature on migration, the voices of women are still silent. This creates an urgent need to advance academic research on female international migration by examining women as independent migrants. Immigrant Women's Voices and Integrating Feminism Into Migration Theory comprehensively documents the experiences of immigrant women across the globe and the important theories that define their experiences. The chapters give firsthand accounts of women speaking about their own experiences on migration and topics associated with women and migration. This book aims to give women their own voice and to stand apart from previous literature in which male relatives spoke on behalf of immigrant women to tell their stories for them. While highlighting topics on women in migration including feminism, gendered social roles, first-person narratives, and the female identity, this book is ideally for professionals in social science disciplines as well as practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students wanting to expand their knowledge on women and migration, gender violence, and women empowerment.

Book excerpt: Spatial perception and cognition is fundamental to human abilities to navigate through space, identify and locate objects, and track entities in motion. Moreover, research findings in the last couple of decades reveal that many of the mechanisms humans employ to achieve this are largely innate, providing abilities to store cognitive maps for locating themselves and others, locations, directions and routes. In this, humans are like many other species. However, unlike other species, humans can employ language in order to represent space. The human linguistic ability combined with the human ability for spatial representation apparently results in rich, creative and sometimes surprising extensions of representations for three-dimensional physical space. The present volume brings together over 20 articles from leading scholars who investigate the relationship between spatial cognition and spatial language. The volume is fully representative of the state of the art in terms of language and space research, and points to new directions in terms of findings, theory, and practice.

Book excerpt: FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ENGLISH a timeless tribute to one of the world’s most marginalized peoples and the riveting tale of one boy’s journey to manhood Sweeping us into the world of the roma as fascism gathers force and the Holocaust looms on the horizon, The Color of Smoke is a thoroughly absorbing story that abounds in unforgettable characters. There is the adolescent narrator, torn between his people and a society that both entices him and rejects him. From his rise in school to his first sexual encounters, from hunger to police harassment, he treads a precarious path--one marked by moments of beauty and poignancy along with bawdiness, violence, and high adventure. And we come to know a people bound as much by a rich moral fabric as by the land and by the horses they love. By an author who himself came of age in a Romani settlement during World War II, The Color of Smoke is a must read for anyone seeking a stunningly new, authoritative window onto the lives of the dispossessed--with haunting implications for today.Magisterial in scope and yet intensely personal, it combines beautiful prose with profound reflections on the human condition as only great literature can.
