Book excerpt: Rolling in Ditches with Shamans charts American anthropology in the 1920s through the life and work of one of the amateur scholars of the time, Jaime de Angulo (1887?1950). Although he earned a medical degree, de Angulo chose to live on an isolated ranch in Big Sur, California, where he participated fully in the lives of the people who were his ethnographic informants. The period of his most extensive research coincides almost perfectly with the professionalization of anthropology, and de Angulo provides a link between those who are generally recognized as the most important figures of the day: Franz Boas, Alfred Kroeber, and Edward Sapir. ø The fields of salvage ethnography and linguistics, which Boas emphasized, were aimed at recording the culture, language, and myths of the Native groups before they became completely acculturated. In keeping with these dictates, de Angulo recorded data from thirty groups, mostly in California, which otherwise might have been lost. In an unusual move for that time, he also wrote fiction and poetry describing the modern lives of the people he studied, something of little interest to Boas but of great interest today. His most enduring work is Indian Tales, a fictional synthesis of myths learned from various California Indians. De Angulo?s range of interests, originality, and expertise exemplified the curiosity and brilliance of those who pioneered American anthropology at this time.

Book excerpt: An elderly aunt wants her wedding to be perfect—and not even murder will get in her way—in “a hoot” of a mystery featuring “scads of loony characters” (Kirkus Reviews). Moving to Arizona to work for a private investigator, Sophie “Phee” Kimball is much closer to her mother Harriet now. And while the antics at Harriet’s retirement community can drive Phee a little crazy, at least they’re together for Aunt Ina’s upcoming wedding. The seventy-four-year-old bridezilla has roped Phee into organizing the tent and the pastries for the lavish affair. But it’s Harriet who really gets demanding when a celebrity chef is found dead on the golf course just outside her front door. Working for a private investigator, Phee is drawn into the case. And with Harriet in a panic about her safety, Phee is doubly committed to solving it. But between planning a wedding and unveiling a murderer, Phee wonders which job might kill her first.

Colonel Arabi has led an Egyptian rebellion against the Khedive, hereditary ruler of Egypt for the Ottoman Turks, and the British fear for the security of the Suez Canal and the passage to India. Jack and his men have to compete with the heat, insects and General Wolseley. Adding to the complexities of war, Jack’s old adversaries of the Fenians become involved, as does Major Costello of the US Marines. Together with the Royal Malverns, can he find the way through and emerge victorious? The 11th novel in Malcolm Archibald's Jack Windrush series, A Ditch In Egypt is a riveting story of a Victorian military officer's life set in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Book excerpt: "In 1980s India, the Ramsay Brothers and other filmmakers produced a wave of horror movies about soul-sucking witches, knife-wielding psychopaths, and dark-caped vampires. Seeing Things is about the sudden cuts, botched prosthetic effects, continuity errors, and celluloid damage in these movies. Such moments may very well be "failures" of various kinds, but in this book Kartik Nair reads them as clues to the conditions in which the films were once made, censored, and seen, offering a view from below of the world's largest film culture. Combining extensive archival research and original interviews with close readings of landmark films including Purana Mandir, Veerana, and Jaani Dushman, this book tracks the material coordinates of horror cinema's spectral images. In the process, Seeing Things discovers a spectral materiality-one that informs Bombay horror's haunted houses, grotesque bodies, and graphic violence and gives visceral force to our experience of the genre's globally familiar conventions"--

At the heart of this true story is Charles Strickland, a bandleader and school teacher, who sacrificed himself way beyond the mere teacher/student relationship. While his personal life seems driven by some internal force, he found himself tormented by a love that seems unobtainable. Puff Ditch, a unique and unusual title given to a story that's unusually funny, informative, serious, compassionate, and romantic. Just a rollercoaster portrait of real life, leaps from the mind of a 5th grade African American kid growing up in Bastrop, Louisiana. With all the town's colorful characters, you definitely want to find out how this story got its name; Puff Ditch.
