Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accompanying the present trend of engineering systems aimed at size reduction and design at microscopic/nanoscopic length scales, Mechanics of Dislocation Fields describes the self-organization of dislocation ensembles at small length scales and its consequences on the overall mechanical behavior of crystalline bodies. The account of the fundamental interactions between the dislocations and other microscopic crystal defects is based on the use of smooth field quantities and powerful tools from the mathematical theory of partial differential equations. The resulting theory is able to describe the emergence of dislocation microstructures and their evolution along complex loading paths. Scale transitions are performed between the properties of the dislocation ensembles and the mechanical behavior of the body. Several variants of this overall scheme are examined which focus on dislocation cores, electromechanical interactions of dislocations with electric charges in dielectric materials, the intermittency and scale-invariance of dislocation activity, grain-to-grain interactions in polycrystals, size effects on mechanical behavior and path dependence of strain hardening.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume aims to provide a thorough treatment of the phenomena of elastic anisostropy and a discussion on dislocation mobilities. The book presents a wide treatment of these topics, and includes descriptions of detailed theoretical models to describe dislocations and cracks, and moving dislocations. An overview is given of the physical behaviour resulting from dislocation mobility in materials, such as glide and climb, interactions with point defects and the behaviour of dislocations under radiation such as creep and swelling.

This book was released on 1997-10-10 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author applies methods of nonlinear elasticity to the investigation of the defects in the crystal structure of solids such as dislocations and disclinations. These defects characterize mainly the plastic and strength properties of many constructional materials. Contrary to the well-developed nonlinear continual theory of dislocations continuously distributed in the body, which is based on geometrical ideas, the nonlinear analysis of isolated dislocations and disclinations is less developed; it is given for the first time in this book. This analysis is essential since the deformation near the axes of an isolated defect is rather big, so the linear theory is not applicable here. The general theory of Volterra's dislocations in elastic media under large deformations is developed. A number of exact solutions of the problems are found. The nonlinear approach to investigating the isolated defects produces the results that often differ qualitatively from those of the linear theory. The book addresses students and researchers.

Like these bumps, they can be easily moved, and they provide the most important mechanism by which the solid can be deformed. They also have a strong influence on crystal growth and on the electronic properties of semiconductors.
