Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Early Modern Theology, 1600-1800 written by Ulrich L. Lehner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 747 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Early Modern Theology, 1600-1800 will offer a comprehensive and reliable introduction to Christian theological literature originating in Western Europe from, roughly, the end of the French Wars of Religion (1598) to the Congress of Vienna (1815). Using a variety of approaches, the contributors examine theology spanning from Bossuet to Jonathan Edwards. They review the major forms of early modern theology, such as Cartesian scholasticism, Enlightenment, and early Romanticism; sketch the teachings of major theological concepts, along with important historical developments; introduce the principal practitioners of each kind of theology and delineate their particular theological contributions and stresses; and depict the engagement by early modern theologians with other religions or churches, such Judaism, Islam, and the eastern Church. Combining contributions from top scholars in the field, this will be an invaluable resource for understanding a complex and varied body of research.
Download or read book John Duns Scotus written by Antoon Vos and published by Summum Academic. This book was released on 2018-12-31 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Duns Scotus (1266-1308) was one of the most important theologians and philosophers of the Middle Ages with a considerable influence on both christian and secular thought. He was called the Doctor Subtilis for his penetrating and subtle manner of thought. Despite his importance and greatness, little is known about his life, and information on his life in older literature is often not correct. In this volume, Antonie Vos presents a new biography based on the facts and on the information given in the writings of Duns himself. Information in older literature is checked and often corrected, and new information is added.

Book Synopsis The Theology of John Duns Scotus by : Antonie Vos
Download or read book The Theology of John Duns Scotus written by Antonie Vos and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Antonie Vos offers a comprehensive analysis of the philosophy and theological thought of John Duns Scotus. First, a summary is given of the life and times of John Duns Scotus: his background and years in Oxford (12-80-1301), his time in Paris and Cologne (1308-1309) and his year in exile in Oxford and Cambridge (1303-1304). From there on, Scotus' Trinitarian theology and Christology are introduced. Duns not only embraced the doctrine of the Trinity, he also proved that God must be Trinitarian by connecting the first Person with knowledge to the second One with will. Further insights of Scotus' are discussed, such as the theory of Creation, ethics, justification and predestination, and the sacraments. The volume concludes with an overview of historical dilemmas in Scotus' theological thought.

Book Synopsis Beyond the Inquisition by : Giorgio Caravale
Download or read book Beyond the Inquisition written by Giorgio Caravale and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2017-04-30 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Beyond the Inquisition, originally published in an Italian edition in 2007, Giorgio Caravale offers a fresh perspective on sixteenth-century Italian religious history and the religious crisis that swept across Europe during that period. Through an intellectual biography of Ambrogio Catarino Politi (1484–1553), Caravale rethinks the problems resulting from the diffusion of Protestant doctrines in Renaissance Italy and the Catholic opposition to their advance. At the same time, Caravale calls for a new conception of the Counter-Reformation, demonstrating that during the first half of the sixteenth century there were many alternatives to the inquisitorial model that ultimately prevailed. Lancellotto Politi, the jurist from Siena who entered the Dominican order in 1517 under the name of Ambrogio Catarino, started his career as an anti-Lutheran controversialist, shared friendships with the Italian Spirituals, and was frequently in conflict with his own order. The main stages of his career are all illustrated with a rich array of previously published and unpublished documentation. Caravale's thorough analysis of Politi's works, actions, and relationships significantly alters the traditional image of an intransigent heretic hunter and an author of fierce anti-Lutheran tirades. In the same way, the reconstruction of his role as a papal theologian and as a bishop in the first phase of the Council and the reinterpretation of his battle against the Spanish theologian Domingo de Soto and scholasticism reestablish the image of a Counter-Reformation that was different from the one that triumphed in Trent, the image of an alternative that was viable but never came close to being implemented.
