Book excerpt: Sediment transport in flow has a practical impact on environmental and economic aspects of human society, for instance, water quality, hydraulic structures and land resources. A systematic understanding of the sediment transport processes is of critical significance to establish proper water resources and sediment management plans. Both random properties of flows and varying properties of sediment particles can induce stochastic nature of sediment particle movement in the flows. Thus, stochastic approaches or analyses are beneficial to analyzing the variability associated with the movement of sediment particles. In this context, the focus of this study is to model various features of sediment transport in open channel flow with stochastic approaches.^The scope of the study includes the following main issues: the movement of sediment particles in turbulent open channel flows in the occurrences of extreme flows, the deposition and resuspension processes of sediment particles, sediment concentrations and its uncertainty, and various modeling framework of stochastic particle tracking models. Turbulence in a flow is a primary source of stochastic property of particle movement in the flow. Furthermore, extreme flows that might occur occasionally in a random manner reinforce the randomness of the movement of sediment particles in the flow. The volatile flow velocity of extreme flows will not only affect the mean trend of particle movement but also intensify the uncertainty of particle movement. Specifically, since extreme flow events randomly occur per se, the random manner of the occurrences generates the stochastic property that affects the movement of sediment particles.^Thus, it is effective to employ stochastic approaches for describing sediment transport processes associated with uncertainty. Herein, both a & lsquo;stochastic diffusion process & rsquo; and a & lsquo;stochastic jump diffusion process & rsquo; are introduced to describe stochastic particle movement in open channel flows. The & lsquo;stochastic jump diffusion process & rsquo; represents the particle movement in response to extreme flow events that randomly occur in a turbulent open channel flow, whereas the & lsquo;stochastic diffusion process & rsquo; characterizes the particle movement in a turbulent open channel flow. As a result, both the stochastic diffusion particle tracking model (SD-PTM) and the stochastic jump diffusion particle tracking model (SJD-PTM) can present particle trajectories, and roughly estimated instantaneous velocities.^The ensemble statistics of the particle trajectories and velocities radically contain information on the stochastic characteristics of sediment particle movement. The SD-PTM and SJD-PTM to estimate particle trajectory and velocity is verified with data of Sumer and Oguz (1978), Muste and Patel (1997), Cuthberson and Ervine (2007) and Muste et al. (2009). The sediment concentration and sediment flux are highly-sought, practical variables in that the existence and amount of suspended sediments in surface waters have a direct influence on water quality and its suitability for drinking and industrial purposes. Especially, the estimation of sediment concentrations demonstrates the transporting process of suspended sediment through its spatial and temporal distributions. The sediment concentrations play a significant role as a pragmatic indicator in the decision making process.^Thus, the previous-stated particle-based stochastic approach for sediment transport is enhanced to predict the suspended sediment concentration, and to quantify the uncertainty of the sediment concentrations. The method also allows for particle entrainment into flows and particle settlement on the bed as main processes in open channel flows. Through multiple realizations of the particle movement with stochastic properties, the SD-PTM shows not only sediment concentrations at a specific location and time but also uncertainty for the estimated sediment concentrations. The proposed method, in this context, is a more straightforward method to evaluate uncertainty due to stochastic properties in the particle movement and a unique way to present the uncertainty of sediment concentrations. The proposed stochastic particle tracking model for sediment concentrations is verified with data of Coleman (1986).^The final goal of this study is to pursue further investigation into two different types of stochastic particle tracking approaches describing sediment particle movement associated with randomness. The different types of approaches are classified into the & lsquo;univariate & rsquo; and the & lsquo;multivariate & rsquo; stochastic particle tracking models according to the selection of key stochastic variables that describe the randomness of natural phenomena. In the & lsquo;univariate & rsquo; stochastic particle tracking model, one state vector (e.g., particle position) is regarded as a targeted variable. The above proposed models can be thought of as the & lsquo;univariate & rsquo; stochastic particle tracking model. In the & lsquo;multivariate & rsquo; stochastic particle tracking model, the sediment particle velocity and position are joint Markovian state variables, since the flow velocity evolves in time according to a generalized stochastic differential equation.^Model comparisons are performed and both models are verified with data of Sumer and Oguz (1978).

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to give an introduction to the most important aspects of suspended matter in the aquatic environment: its origin and composition, the concentration distribution, transport and deposition, and the most important physical-chemical-bio logical process that affects suspended matter: flocculation. In Chap ter 1 the development of suspended matter observation and study throughout history is given, with the coming of a more modern approach during the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, and the development of the present science of suspended matter after 1945. The sources of suspended matter in rivers, lakes, estuaries, and the sea are discussed in Chapter 2, which includes the supply of detrital particles as well as the formation of new particles in the water (organic matter, carbonate, opal). The concentration distribution of suspended matter in rivers, lakes, estuaries, tidal is discussed in Chapter 3, to which is areas, lagoons, and in the sea added a discussion on the sampling of suspended matter and on methods to determine its concentration. Particle composition is treated in Chapter 4, to which is added a section (4. 6) on the compositional analysis of suspended particles. Also included is a discussion on particle surface characteristics and the adsorption of elements and compounds onto particles.

Book excerpt: This book represents a compilation of papers presented at a symposium on the subject "Suspended Solids in Hater." held in Santa Barbara. California. U.S.A .• on March 20. 2] and 22, 1973. The symposium was sponsored by the Office of Naval Research and was designed to bring together a group that represented the domi nant cross section of international research in this area. The idea for the conference originated as ONR recognized a potentially interesting area that, to date. had not had the benefit of a co ordinating symposium and/or a book published on the specific sub ject. In addition to the formal presentation of papers - informal open discussions followed - the symposium included two stimulating workshops. An abundance of impromptu exchange filled unscheduled periods. Many of the contributors have incorporated in their pa pers the ideas and points raised in discussions following formal presentation and at other times. The reader thus actually profits from the various discussions throughout the meeting. The two half-day workshops were directed toward the subjects of sampling and concentrating suspended materials and in situ in strumentation. I have summarized the discussions from the two workshops for the reader and have correlated the material wherever possible in an introductory chapter. I have also included intro ductory material to acquaint the newcomer with the general field.

Book excerpt: All coastal areas are facing a growing range of stresses and shocks, the scale of which now poses threats to the resilience of both human and environmental coastal systems. Responsible agencies are seeking better ways of managing the causes and consequences of the environmental change process in coastal zones. This volume discusses the basic principles underpinning a more integrated approach to coastal management and highlights the obstacles that may be met in practice in both developed and developing countries. Successful strategies will have to encompass all the elements of management, from planning and design through financing and implementation, as highlighted in this book.

Book excerpt: The vertical distribution of suspended sediment concentration and velocity plays a major role in the study of the transport rate and the transport capacities of a river. Many suspended sediments concentration and velocity profiles exist in the literature, having ambiguous conditions of application. In addition, it is not easy to conduct in - situ measurements. This reveals, not only the utility of using numerical profiles, but also the responsibility of choosing an optimal one.The present thesis aims to conceive new tools for studying the vertical velocity and concentration distribution. In this context, we present two new sediment diffusivity coefficients obtained by the introduction of correction operator on the parabolic diffusivity coefficient. These models are implemented in the convection diffusion equation to generate two analytical concentration profiles and using the Boussinesq assumption, they lead to two analytical velocity profiles. Also, we conceive a method for choosing between different mathematical representation of a same physical phenomenon, and two methods for the intersection between these representations when more than one is applicable and for the extension of the representations to the cases where no model is applicable. We apply this method on the study of the vertical velocity profile and the sediment distribution in steady and uniform sediment laden open channel flows, and we develop the expert system for the vertical sediment concentration distribution code_ERESA.In an appendix, we test the use of the finite volume code_Saturne for the study of the vertical velocity distribution and suspended sediment concentration in open channel flows.
