Book Synopsis Dislocation Sources and the Strength of Magnesium Oxide Single Crystals by : R. J. Stokes
Download or read book Dislocation Sources and the Strength of Magnesium Oxide Single Crystals written by R. J. Stokes and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report compares the room temperature mechanical behavior of MgO crystals containing fresh and grown in dislocation sources. Fresh dislocation sources introduced by cleavage or mechanical contact move and multiply to generate slip bands at 3000 psi. Macroscopically the crystals yield smoothly at 6000 psi and can be quite ductile. When fresh sources are eliminated by chemical polishing the crystals have to rely on grown in sources to initiate slip. They then deform elastically up to extremely high stresses, about 30,000 to 50,000 psi, yielding with a sharp yield drop down to the stress level at which fresh sources operate. Grown in sources are considered to be associated with impurity precipitate particles or inclusions. Annealing polished crystals at 2000 C dissolves these particles thereby eliminating sources for slip. The crystals then become greater than 70,000 psi and approach within 1/10 of the theoretical strength. (Author).

Book Synopsis Dislocation Configurations and the Initiation of Yielding in Magnesium Oxide by : R. J. Stokes
Download or read book Dislocation Configurations and the Initiation of Yielding in Magnesium Oxide written by R. J. Stokes and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper distinguishes between the role of fresh, aged, grown-in and high-temperature dislocations in the initiation of plastic flow in magnesium oxide single crystals. Grown-in dislocations in commercial purity crystals cannot be moved even under very high stresses and play no role in initiating slip at room temperature. Plastic deformation originates from fresh dislocation loops injected into the crystal surface. Fresh dislocations, introduced by prestrain at room temperature, become aged at high temperatures resulting in dislocation locking and an increase in stress to reinitiate slip. Weak locking occurs above 600C and strong locking above 1200C. Dislocations are almost completely immobilized by heating to 1900C. Changes in dislocation configuration upon heating were studied by etch pit and electron transmission techniques. It is considered that the immobility of grown-in, aged and high temperature dislocations is due to a combination of impurity locking, configurational locking and the reduction of internal stresses. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amplitude dependent internal friction measurements have been made on MgO crystals over the temperature range 0 to 300 C at frequencies of 5 cps. Analysis of the temperature dependency of the critical breakaway strain, delineating the transition from amplitude independent to amplitude dependent internal friction, permits an evaluation of the relative pinning strength of the Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions, less than .001 e and 0.035 eV respectively, determined on specimens from bulk sources. Optical absorption measurements confirm the presence of the Fe3+ ion in one bulk crystal and its absence in the other. (A UTHOR).
Book Synopsis The Effect of Surface Treatment on the Bending Characteristics of MgO Single Crystals by : Lawrence David Johnson
Download or read book The Effect of Surface Treatment on the Bending Characteristics of MgO Single Crystals written by Lawrence David Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As-cleaved specimens of MgO which were chemically polished in phosphoric acid, acetic acid, ammonium acetate, and distilled water exhibited on bending in air a sudden load drop phenomenon. This effect was believed to be associated with the removal of mobile surface dislocation halfloops by the environment. Specimens of MgO which were fatigue strained and then polished in phosphoric acid did not exhibit the load drop effect. Fatigue straining before polishing introduced many mobile dislocations which were not removed by polishing. Specimens of MgO which were alternately deflected 0.02 in. in bending and polished in phosphoric acid exhibited greater deflection than as-cleaved specimens. (Author).

Book excerpt: A Comprehensive and Self-Contained Treatment of the Theory and Practical Applications of Ceramic Materials When failure occurs in ceramic materials, it is often catastrophic, instantaneous, and total. Now in its Second Edition, this important book arms readers with a thorough and accurate understanding of the causes of these failures and how to design ceramics for failure avoidance. It systematically covers: Stress and strain Types of mechanical behavior Strength of defect-free solids Linear elastic fracture mechanics Measurements of elasticity, strength, and fracture toughness Subcritical crack propagation Toughening mechanisms in ceramics Effects of microstructure on toughness and strength Cyclic fatigue of ceramics Thermal stress and thermal shock in ceramics Fractography Dislocation and plastic deformation in ceramics Creep and superplasticity of ceramics Creep rupture at high temperatures and safe life design Hardness and wear And more While maintaining the first edition's reputation for being an indispensable professional resource, this new edition has been updated with sketches, explanations, figures, tables, summaries, and problem sets to make it more student-friendly as a textbook in undergraduate and graduate courses on the mechanical properties of ceramics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center has conducted the Sagamore Army Materials Research Conferences, in cooperation with the Metallurgical Research Laboratories of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Metallurgy of Syracuse University, since 1954. The purpose of the conferences has been to gather together scientists and engineers from academic institutions, industry, and government who are uniquely qualified to explore in depth a subject of importance to the Army, the Department of Defense and the scientific corr.munity. This volume, Surfaces and Interfaces ll: Physical and Mechanical Properties, can be considered a continuation, or perhaps an extension, of the information contained in Surfaces and Interfaces I: Chemical and Physical Characteristics. The emphasis in this volume is focused on: the technological significance of surfaces and interfaces; surface sensitive mechanical properties; environment-sensitive properties; control of grain structure; and composite materials. It is felt that the rather ambitious undertaking of the program committee to place the role of "surfaces and interfaces" in its proper context has been achieved. The balance between basic research findings and more applied research allows the reader a certain degree of latitude in the use of the two volumes. The continued active interest and support of these conferences by Col. C. T. Riordan, Commanding Officer, Dr. E. Scala, Technical Di rector, and J. F. Sullivan, Deputy Technical Director, of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center is appreciated.
