Book excerpt: Excerpt from Disintegration of Girdled Western Hemlock and Grand Fir The occurrence of overmature defective trees is responsible for some of the most difficult management problems in the western white pine type. Grand fir and'western hemlock in particular are highly susceptible to Woodarotting fungi. In addition, because of their shade tolerance, they often inhibit or prevent establishment and growth of the more desirable but less shade-tolerant species such as western white pine. Hence, many of the management practices for the white pine type provide for the re moval of trees of undesirable form, condition, or species. Girdling is one method of removing such trees. This method was exten sively used by the U. S. Forest Service between 1915 and 1930 on timber sales in the western white pine type. Although girdling lowhvalue trees 'was discontinued as a stand improvement measure after 1930 because of the high fire hazard of the resulting snags (figure there were reasons to consider the method worthy of further study. For example, it is a com paratively cheap and effective'way to destroy an occasional large tree, such as a wolf tree which is suppressing desirable reproduction. Tests 2/ 1tere made, accordingly, to determine the effect of girdling on cone pro duction, mortality, rate of disintegration of trees, end.damage to repro duction. Results of these studies are described in this report. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Growth of Site Trees and Stand Structure in Mixed Stands of Pacific Silver Fir and Western Hemlock Hemlock had more stems per acre then silver fir at all locations except Wolf Point. Anomalously, silver fir had more stems than hemlock at this burned location; we do not know why. A seed source and timing of seed crops in favor of silver fir may account for more silver fir at this location. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A 4-Year Record of Sitka Spruce and Western Hemlock Seed Fall Beginning in September, seed traps were examined every few days to determine when seed fall started. Thereafter, seed was collected from the traps monthly until February. A final collection was made each year during June or July. Seeds collected from the traps were classified by species and counted. Approximate viability was determined by cutting test, that is, seeds were opened with a razor blade and the cross sections examined; those appearing firm and white were considered viable. 4. Book excerpt: This timely collection of essays - written by nine recognized forestry and environmental specialists - tells the story of the conservation, use, and changes in the Commonwealth's forests over time. The book traces the development of pre-settlement, colonial, and post-Revolutionary War forest practices, and concludes with recommendations as to how history might be used to inform and shape future policy. Underscored is the importance of private and local leadership, such as the unique Massachusetts town forest movement. Economic contributions and educational programs are detailed, as well as the ways Massachusetts' leadership has influenced national forestry. Written for the layperson, and reflecting the particular experience and style of each contributor, the history will appeal to a range of readers from local conservation activists to forestry professionals and policymakers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller • Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize • An Oprah's Book Club Selection “Powerful . . . [Kingsolver] has with infinitely steady hands worked the prickly threads of religion, politics, race, sin and redemption into a thing of terrible beauty.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review The Poisonwood Bible, now celebrating its 25th anniversary, established Barbara Kingsolver as one of the most thoughtful and daring of modern writers. Taking its place alongside the classic works of postcolonial literature, it is a suspenseful epic of one family's tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in Africa. The story is told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it—from garden seeds to Scripture—is calamitously transformed on African soil. The novel is set against one of the most dramatic political chronicles of the twentieth century: the Congo's fight for independence from Belgium, the murder of its first elected prime minister, the CIA coup to install his replacement, and the insidious progress of a world economic order that robs the fledgling African nation of its autonomy. Against this backdrop, Orleanna Price reconstructs the story of her evangelist husband's part in the Western assault on Africa, a tale indelibly darkened by her own losses and unanswerable questions about her own culpability. Also narrating the story, by turns, are her four daughters—the teenaged Rachel; adolescent twins Leah and Adah; and Ruth May, a prescient five-year-old. These sharply observant girls, who arrive in the Congo with racial preconceptions forged in 1950s Georgia, will be marked in surprisingly different ways by their father's intractable mission, and by Africa itself. Ultimately each must strike her own separate path to salvation. Their passionately intertwined stories become a compelling exploration of moral risk and personal responsibility.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest land managers face the challenges of preparing their forests for the impacts of climate change. However, climate change adds a new dimension to the task of developing and testing science-based management options to deal with the effects of stressors on forest ecosystems in the southern United States. The large spatial scale and complex interactions make traditional experimental approaches difficult. Yet, the current progression of climate change science offers new insights from recent syntheses, models, and experiments, providing enough information to start planning now for a future that will likely include an increase in disturbances and rapid changes in forest conditions. Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Management Options: A Guide for Natural Resource Managers in Southern Forest Ecosystems provides a comprehensive analysis of forest management options to guide natural resource management in the face of future climate change. Topics include potential climate change impacts on wildfire, insects, diseases, and invasives, and how these in turn might affect the values of southern forests that include timber, fiber, and carbon; water quality and quantity; species and habitats; and recreation. The book also considers southern forest carbon sequestration, vulnerability to biological threats, and migration of native tree populations due to climate change. This book utilizes the most relevant science and brings together science experts and land managers from various disciplines and regions throughout the south to combine science, models, and on-the-ground experience to develop management options. Providing a link between current management actions and future management options that would anticipate a changing climate, the authors hope to ensure a broader range of options for managing southern forests and protecting their values in the future.
