Book excerpt: A regional transportation system and the movement of large traffic volumes through it are characteristic of stochastic, or random, systems. The standard transportation planning approach uses a slice-in-time view of the system. Static, mean values of system variables are used for the basis of decisions. Due to the highly variable nature of transportation systems, accurate analysis is difficult. Discrete event simulation experiments based on appropriate system data, can validate verify and improve that accuracy. The simulation model, as an essential component, is dependent on the spatial accuracy of the real world coordinates of the roadway network. The lengths of links, queues and turn lanes, for example, are directly related to the roadway system's capacity and the magnitude of incident caused congestion. The use of accurate Geographic Information System (GIS) data in conjunction with powerful transportation simulation software and properly designed data collection and analysis techniques can be invaluable in support of transportation incident management decisions. This thesis will demonstrate the value of spatially accurate GIS data in support of mesoscopic, transportation simulation modeling. Traffic data collected with inadequate control and planning is shown as a serious detriment to the ability to analyze the system as well as to the strength of the results. More realistic predictions of incident-caused congestion will improve the effectiveness of incident management planning.

When modeling transportation systems such as freeway systems, arterial or downtown grid systems, the city planner and engineer is concerned with capturing the varied interactions between drivers, automobiles, and the infrastructure. Modeling and simulation are used to effectively optimize the design and operation of all of these urban systems. It is possible that in an urban simulation community workshop, citizens can work interactively in front of computers and be able using the click of the mouse to walk up to their own front porch, looking at the proposed shopping mall alternatives across the street from virtually any angle and proposed bridge or tunnel and see how it can reduce traffic congestion. Buildings can be scaled down or taken out, their orientation can be changed in order to check the view and orientation in order to have better site with efficient energy-conservation. The stone or brick material on a building can be replaced by colored concrete, or more trees and lampposts can be placed on the site. Such flexibility in simulation and animation allows creative ideas in the design and orientation of urban sites to be demonstrated to citizens and decision makers before final realization.

Previously, we estimated that 1-m resolution panchromatic imagery should allow accurate vehicle counts and rough vehicle classifications, while large vehicles might be accurately detected with only 4-m resolution. At least three private groups are planning to market such high-resolution satellite data in the near future, but several issues must be addressed before these data could be used to complement traffic monitoring programs. This report addresses the following issues: demonstrating that vehicles can be identified and classified accurately from satellite imagery; developing efficient image processing methods; and determining methods to integrate the imagery with ground-based data and assessing the value of this integration.

Simulation of traffic may assist in both analysis and management of traffic. In many situations, simulation of traffic enables accurate traffic scenarios to be observed without the need and expense of physically generating such traffic in the real system. Traffic simulation generally focuses on the changes of events and the consequence of these events. Therefore, discrete-event simulation is best suited for handling traffic simulation. Discrete-event simulation may sometimes have the disadvantage of requiring vast quantities of CPU time in order to produce statistically accurate estimates. Distributed and parallel discrete-event simulation may reduce the execution time by employing multiple computers or processors. The commonly available processing platform of a network of PCs/workstations is recognized as having the potential of providing a vast CPU resource. Network reliability and network bandwidth reservation is greatly increasing PC/workstation interconnectivity. Many problems exist when attempting to obtain processing speedup over a network of PCs/workstations. This research investigates the potential of distributed master/slave load sharing for discrete-event simulation speedup with a focus on the area of traffic simulation. A new modeling methodology called MMTS is proposed for discrete-event simulation and a generic traffic simulation engine called SIM-ENG is developed. SIM-ENG is designed to be compatible with the MMTS modeling methodology. This design incorporates software engineering concepts such as software reuse and interoperability. The proposed SIM-ENG implementation illustrates new methods for integrating discrete-event simulation into a master/slave load sharing environment.
