Book Synopsis Direct and Inverse Problems in Wave Propagation and Applications by : Ivan Graham
Download or read book Direct and Inverse Problems in Wave Propagation and Applications written by Ivan Graham and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the third volume of three volume series recording the "Radon Special Semester 2011 on Multiscale Simulation & Analysis in Energy and the Environment" taking place in Linz, Austria, October 3-7, 2011. This book surveys recent developments in the analysis of wave propagation problems. The topics covered include aspects of the forward problem and problems in inverse problems, as well as applications in the earth sciences. Wave propagation problems are ubiquitous in environmental applications such as seismic analysis, acoustic and electromagnetic scattering. The design of efficient numerical methods for the forward problem, in which the scattered field is computed from known geometric configurations is very challenging due to the multiscale nature of the problems. Even more challenging are inverse problems where material parameters and configurations have to be determined from measurements in conjunction with the forward problem. This book contains review articles covering several state-of-the-art numerical methods for both forward and inverse problems. This collection of survey articles focusses on the efficient computation of wave propagation and scattering is a core problem in numerical mathematics, which is currently of great research interest and is central to many applications in energy and the environment. Two generic applications which resonate strongly with the central aims of the Radon Special Semester 2011 are forward wave propagation in heterogeneous media and seismic inversion for subsurface imaging. As an example of the first application, modelling of absorption and scattering of radiation by clouds, aerosol and precipitation is used as a tool for interpretation of (e.g.) solar, infrared and radar measurements, and as a component in larger weather/climate prediction models in numerical weather forecasting. As an example of the second application, inverse problems in wave propagation in heterogeneous media arise in the problem of imaging the subsurface below land or marine deposits. The book records the achievements of Workshop 3 "Wave Propagation and Scattering, Inverse Problems and Applications in Energy and the Environment". It brings together key numerical mathematicians whose interest is in the analysis and computation of wave propagation and scattering problems, and in inverse problems, together with practitioners from engineering and industry whose interest is in the applications of these core problems.

Book Synopsis Wave Propagation in Materials for Modern Applications by : Andrey Petrin
Download or read book Wave Propagation in Materials for Modern Applications written by Andrey Petrin and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the recent decades, there has been a growing interest in micro- and nanotechnology. The advances in nanotechnology give rise to new applications and new types of materials with unique electromagnetic and mechanical properties. This book is devoted to the modern methods in electrodynamics and acoustics, which have been developed to describe wave propagation in these modern materials and nanodevices. The book consists of original works of leading scientists in the field of wave propagation who produced new theoretical and experimental methods in the research field and obtained new and important results. The first part of the book consists of chapters with general mathematical methods and approaches to the problem of wave propagation. A special attention is attracted to the advanced numerical methods fruitfully applied in the field of wave propagation. The second part of the book is devoted to the problems of wave propagation in newly developed metamaterials, micro- and nanostructures and porous media. In this part the interested reader will find important and fundamental results on electromagnetic wave propagation in media with negative refraction index and electromagnetic imaging in devices based on the materials. The third part of the book is devoted to the problems of wave propagation in elastic and piezoelectric media. In the fourth part, the works on the problems of wave propagation in plasma are collected. The fifth, sixth and seventh parts are devoted to the problems of wave propagation in media with chemical reactions, in nonlinear and disperse media, respectively. And finally, in the eighth part of the book some experimental methods in wave propagations are considered. It is necessary to emphasize that this book is not a textbook. It is important that the results combined in it are taken “from the desks of researchers“. Therefore, I am sure that in this book the interested and actively working readers (scientists, engineers and students) will find many interesting results and new ideas.

This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume consists of papers presented in the special sessions on "Wave Phenomena and Related Topics", and "Asymptotics and Homogenization" of the ISAAC'97 Congress held at the University of Delaware, during June 2-7, 1997. The ISAAC Congress coincided with a U.S.-Japan Seminar also held at the University of Delaware. The latter was supported by the National Science Foundation through Grant INT -9603029 and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science through Grant MTCS-134. It was natural that the 'participants of both meetings should interact and consequently several persons attending the Congress also presented papers in the Seminar. The success of the ISAAC Congress and the U.S.-Japan Seminar has led to the ISAAC'99 Congress being held in Fukuoka, Japan during August 1999. Many of the same participants will return to this Seminar. Indeed, it appears that the spirit of the U.S.-Japan Seminar will be continued every second year as part of the ISAAC Congresses. We decided to include with the papers presented in the ISAAC Congress and the U.S.-Japan Seminar several very good papers by colleagues from the former Soviet Union. These participants in the ISAAC Congress attended at their own expense. This volume has the title Direct and Inverse Problems of Mathematical Physics which consists of the papers on scattering theory, coefficient identification, uniqueness and existence theorems, boundary controllability, wave propagation in stratified media, viscous flows, nonlinear acoustics, Sobolev spaces, singularity theory, pseudo differential operators, and semigroup theory.

Download or read book Introduction to Inverse Problems in Imaging written by M. Bertero and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-08-30 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a graduate textbook on the principles of linear inverse problems, methods of their approximate solution, and practical application in imaging. The level of mathematical treatment is kept as low as possible to make the book suitable for a wide range of readers from different backgrounds in science and engineering. Mathematical prerequisites are first courses in analysis, geometry, linear algebra, probability theory, and Fourier analysis. Book Synopsis Surface Waves in Geomechanics: Direct and Inverse Modelling for Soils and Rocks by : Carlo G. Lai
Download or read book Surface Waves in Geomechanics: Direct and Inverse Modelling for Soils and Rocks written by Carlo G. Lai and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-03-23 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theories of surface waves develop since the end of XIX century and many fundamental problems like existence, phase and group velocities, attenuation (quality factor), mode conversion, etc. have been, in part successfully, solved within the framework of such simple models as ideal fluids^ or linear elasticity. However, a sufficiently complete presentation of this subject, particularly for solids, is still missing in the literature. The sole exception is the book of I. A. Viktorov^ which contains an extensive discussion of fundamental properties of surface waves in homogeneous and stratified linear elastic solids with particular emphasis on contributions of Russian scientists. Unfortunately, the book has never been translated to English and its Russian version is also hardly available. Practical applications of surface waves develop intensively since a much shorter period of time than theories even though the motivation of discoverers of surface waves such as Lord Rayleigh stems from their appearance in geophysics and seismology. Nowadays the growing interest in practical applications of surface waves stem from the following two main factors: surface waves are ideal for developing relatively cheap and convenient methods of nondestructive testing of various systems spanning from nanomaterials (e.g.
