Book excerpt: Definitive text of important prose eclogue, Baroque German's contribution to western literary genres. Prose eclogue, invented by Martin Opitz and perfected in Nuremberg during the 1640s, is perhaps the only original contribution of the German Baroque to the catalogue of western literary genres. Recently, Baroque scholars have recognized that the little-known Die Nymphe Noris, composed in 1650 by the physician and early Pegnitz Shepherd Johann Hellwig (1609-1674), a sequel to the paradigmatic works by Georg Philipp Harsdörffer, Johann Klaj and Sigmund von Birken, is in fact their equal, a highly inventive artifact worthy of serious attention in its own right: Noris forcefully exploits the negative potential of the Vergilian pastoral tradition to criticize blood nobility's privileged status vis-à-vis the nobilitas literata. Working from copies in both Europe and America, Professor Reinhart has established a definitive critical edition of the text (previously only available in the U.S. and U.K. on microfilm), including an introduction outlining the use of prose eclogue as a vehicle for the social mission of the early Pegnesischer Blumenorden. This book will be of interest to literary and cultural historians of early modern Germany, especially Nuremberg, to scholars of the European Baroque and European culture, and to bibliophiles. PROFESSOR REINHARTis associate professor of German at the University of Georgia.

Book excerpt: The most prolific historian of early modern German literature in the twentieth century, Klaus Garber has largely remained unknown to English-language scholars. The seven essays selected here are translated into English for the first time and represent the ’essence’ of Garber’s work. Central to Garber’s outlook is a break with the traditional canonization of culture into national categories. Moreover, he argues that literary history consists not only of intellectual history, but also political and social history. As he states in his preface to this volume: ’To bring Old Europe to life in all the variety of its cultural landscapes; to hear across space and time the voices that praised this multiplicity as a valuable possession; to be inspired by the past to respond to our own needs - these tasks constitute the noblest goal of early modern literary studies today.’

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the early modern period, the nymph remained a powerful figure that inspired and informed the cultural imagination in many different ways. Far from being merely a symbol of the classical legacy, the nymph was invested with a surprisingly broad range of meanings. Working on the basis of these assumptions, and thus challenging Aby Warburg’s famous reflections on the nympha that both portrayed her as cultural archetype and reduced her to a marginal figure, the contributions in this volume seek to uncover the multifarious roles played by nymphs in literature, drama, music, the visual arts, garden architecture, and indeed intellectual culture tout court, and thereby explore the true significance of this well-known figure for the early modern age. Contributors: Barbara Baert, Mira Becker-Sawatzky, Agata Anna Chrzanowska, Karl Enenkel, Wolfgang Fuhrmann, Michaela Kaufmann, Andreas Keller, Eva-Bettina Krems, Damaris Leimgruber, Tobias Leuker, Christian Peters, Christoph Pieper, Bernd Roling, and Anita Traninger.
